In March 2023, a South Carolina jury convicted Alex Murdaugh of the murder of his wife and son. After two years and 93 episodes, the Murdaugh Murders Podcast aired its last episode. The podcast changed its name to True Sunlight. It has also changed its overall theme.
Investigative journalists Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell cohost the program. This renamed podcast does not want listeners to think of it as a true crime podcast. Instead, the True Sunlight team wants to use investigative journalism as a force for good.
In 2021, Alex Murdaugh called the police to report that his wife Maggie and their son Paul had been shot. One year later, police arrested Alex for the double homicide. These aren't the only deaths surrounding this family. The True Sunlight podcast continues to follow the latest news on the Murdaugh story and what's next. The show has the same host and team. But they have expanded their coverage to discuss other abuses of power.
True Sunlight has two experienced reporters running the show. Mandy has worked for news companies in Missouri, Illinois, and South Carolina. And she has spent a long time investigating South Carolina's Murdaugh family. Liz has lived in South Carolina since 2003, so she knows all about the Murdaughs. David Moses, the show's producer (and Mandy's husband), also joins in on the podcast.
The Murdaugh family continues to be the subject of several active criminal investigations. Mandy's tireless and constant work exposes the power dynamics of both this convoluted story and others. She focuses on the facts and people involved. Regular listeners often admire Mandy's dedication to justice and fairness. Mandy and Liz continue their fight against corruption on the True Sunlight podcast. Mandy and Liz also appear on another podcast that grew out of the Murdaugh Murders Podcast. Cup of Justice wants to educate listeners on the justice system. Lawyer Eric Bland is also part of that podcast's team.
