Shakespeare and Company: Writers, Books and Paris is the official podcast of the independent bookstore of the same name. Located in Paris since 1951, the store has become a French institution. It was a meeting point for several prominent writers of the time. These include such literary luminaries as Allan Ginsburg and William S. Burroughs.
Adam Biles hosts Shakespeare and Company: Writers, Books and Paris. He is the literary director for the bookstore. Biles is also the author of two novels–Feeding Time and Beasts of England. In addition to his work as a writer, he is a French translator. He has held both of these positions for several years.
Each episode of the podcast sees Biles interviewing an author at the bookstore. Often, the author in question will promote a new book they recently put out. However, this is only sometimes the case. The guest will occasionally be an author Biles is a fan of.
However, the authors are not the only people interviewed on this podcast. The podcast spends a good deal of time interviewing independent bookstore owners. One of the primary passions of this podcast is the importance of supporting these stores. As such, the podcast will take any opportunity to give them attention.
There are a myriad of fascinating authors who have been previous guests of the podcast. These include people like Pulitzer Prize-winning author Hernan Diaz. Legendary author Ian McEwan has also been a guest on the podcast.
On Sundays, the podcast will sometimes upload episodes of people reading poetry. These offer a stimulating change from the traditional format of the interview episodes.
Shakespeare and Company: Writers, Books and Paris champions the entire literary experience. New episodes of the podcast premiere twice monthly. They are available to listeners every other Wednesday.
