Our Editor's Take

For fans who have a love for hardcore wrestling, there's Tommy Dreamer's House of Hardcore podcast. For the uninitiated, it's called “hardcore” wrestling because the bloodletting is real. That bowling ball a guy dropped on somebody's neck was no prop. That staple gun in the “deathmatch” was not shooting blanks. If it looks like somebody might bleed out, it's because they actually might.

Legendary pro wrestler and promoter Tommy Dreamer has been in the hardcore game for a long time. He enjoyed a stint at the top of the lineup for WWE and was a force in the now-defunct Extreme Championship Wrestling promotion. Over the decades, Dreamer helped to grow the sport, gaining him plenty of respect. Now he shoots that respect right back to his fellow competitors.

With House of Hardcore, Dreamer is here to remind skeptics that hardcore wrestling is a sport. It requires athleticism, talent, and, most of all, commitment. The sacrifices performers make to entertain fans is immense. Dreamer's out to help the world appreciate how much they give.

Most episodes run between 30 minutes to an hour. Dreamer does tell stories about what it was like to be a top pro wrestler back in the day. But the show is more about today's new and established wrestlers.

Dreamer maintains hardcore wrestling isn't about the shock value. It's about the brains, brawn, and heart wrestlers must have to succeed. So he asks the typical questions, like how people made their way into the profession. But then he gets into the deeper stuff. As far as he's concerned, hardcore is an art and requires wild creativity and genuine emotion.
