Our Editor's Take

Girl Tales is a fascinating podcast that retells favorite fairy tales and myths. If fairy tales reflect society, then it's unmistakable that a woman's job is to get rescued by a prince, of course. Almost every fairy tale is about a young woman in a predicament only a man can solve.

The co-creators of Girl Tales are trying to change this. Cocreators Rebecca Cunningham and Chad Chenail have extensive experience with kids' podcasts. They have collaborated with America's Test Kitchen, National Geographic, and Gimlet Media. Their podcast challenges the paradigm of the damsel in distress.

To accomplish this, they have female-centered writers redo these fairy tales. The writers retell familiar stories, but this time, the girls make their own decisions and do much more than wait around for some prince. The Girl Tales podcast features girls setting their own destiny instead of reacting.

Each podcast episode is a short play retelling a popular fairy tale. "Snow White And The Seven Doofs" recounts Snow's dream of moving out of the hut she shares with her messy roommates. In "Reimagining Robin Hood," Robin is a young girl who fights King John's usurious tax rate.

Writers rewrite fairy tales from places everywhere using sensational imagination. Anansi the spider gets a makeover. "Río and the Case of the Coquís" is set in Puerto Rico. It's about kids who mysteriously get turned into little frogs. "Kongji and Patji by Nina Ki" is a Korean Cinderella story. In "Pascale Pimento," Pascale can become invisible. A fairy tries to help, but the solution may be worse than the problem.

Both boys and girls may enjoy the retelling of familiar tales. They'll appreciate the hilarious predicaments the characters sometimes get themselves into. Parents and kids might also enjoy listening together as part of their bedtime ritual. Girl Tales is an inspiring podcast. Episodes come out weekly, and each one lasts about 30 minutes.
