Grilling JR is a podcast about pro wrestling. The show's hosts are Conrad Thompson and Jim Ross, aka JR. Having been at the center of pro wrestling for the better part of four decades, JR is a walking time capsule for the sport. In every episode, he and Conrad revisit memorable moments from his career.
JR has been a pro wrestling ringside commentator since the early 1980s. He started with regional events and then advanced to national matches over time. In 1993, JR announced for WrestleMania for the first time. He continued to work for WWE until 2019. JR has since become a familiar and esteemed figure for pro wrestling fans. Conrad's main career is as a mortgage broker in Huntsville, Alabama. He also works as a pro wrestling promoter and cohosts several podcasts, including Wooooo! Nation and Something to Wrestle with Bruce Prichard.
The podcast chronicles events starting in 1988, before JR joined WWE. That year, the National Wrestling Alliance put on the BunkHouse Stampede as a pay-per-view event. It was in direct competition with the WWE-sponsored Royal Rumble, which aired at the same time. In 1998, JR worked the No Way Out! event. He says he found Mike Tyson and Shawn Michaels difficult to work with.
Conrad and JR also like to reminisce about notable wrestlers on the podcast. Ted DiBiase's moniker was "The Million Dollar Man." After playing football for West Texas State, he trained with the Funk Brothers. Ted's character was that of a rich man who liked to claim that everyone has their price. The hosts look back on the career of Davey Boy Smith (the British Bulldog) and his feud with the Dynamite Kid.
Grilling JR is a great repository of pro wrestling history. Fans of the sport may appreciate it for that reason alone. JR is a levelheaded, unpretentious narrator despite his distinguished career.
