SelfKind with Erica Webb

Erica

Hi and welcome to SelfKind with me, Erica Webb (formerly The Movement and Mindfulness Podcast). This is a podcast about what it means to be, live and move through a lens of self-kindness. We’ll look at the way self-kindness can underpin our practices in movement, mindfulness, and mindset to support us to be and do the things we so desire in the world. It is my firm belief that self-kindness underpins any true self-acceptance, and one of the greatest pursuits we can ever engage in is that of being in a kind and honest relationship with ourselves. Mindful movement and developing a self-kind mindset are the tools I share and my guests do too - among much more. I’m thrilled you’re here. Let’s do this. read less

Ep 257: Shedding Shame: Rules and self-care beyond the good and bad
Welcome to this episode of Self Kind with me, Erica Webb. Today I’m sharing some personal stories around the impact of rules-driven thinking on self-care. I’m tying this topic into last week’s episode with guest Sam Sellers, who joined us to talk about religious trauma. I’m sharing:- my own experiences of guilt and shame that stemmed, at least in part, from my early experiences with religion and fear (and why I left that world in my early 20s)- why I was nick-named the Fun Police in high school- the value that lay in moving beyond the black-and-white thinking of good and bad, especially in terms of self-care practices- the role of values in navigating outside of rule-based thinking.Mentioned in this episode:SelfKind with Erica Webb Ep 256: Religious trauma with Sam Sellers: https://www.ericawebbyoga.com.au/podcast/episode/7bd670d7/ep-256-religious-trauma-with-sam-sellersCounselling with Erica: https://www.ericawebb.com.au/work-with-meTime Stamps:00:00 Welcome to Self Kind with Erica Webb00:05 Exploring the Impact of Rules-Driven Thinking on Self-Care00:43 Personal Journey: From Religious Trauma to Self-Compassion04:44 The Lingering Effects of Religious Upbringing13:34 Breaking Up with Religion and Embracing Self-Care16:24 The Pseudo Safety of Rules and the Power of Values24:35 Reflections and Closing ThoughtsShare your thoughts with me over on Instagram or via my website. Ep 256: Religious Trauma with Sam Sellers
Welcome to this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that’s me!) where I’m chatting with guest Sam Sellers about religious trauma.Sam, a queer religious trauma therapist and clinical supervisor, shares with us her personal story around experiencing religious trauma and how she has navigated the impact of that on her life and identity. Within this conversation is a discussion around the importance of questioning and understanding one's beliefs, the challenges of navigating personal identity and trauma, and the ongoing process of fostering self-trust. About Sam:Sam is a Registered Therapist and Clinical Supervisor, extending her expertise worldwide through online platforms, except for the US & Canada. Specialising in religious trauma, faith deconstruction, and supporting the LGBTQIA+ community, she passionately champions human rights and advocates for marginalised voices. She shares her therapy space with Naya, her intuitive and sweet Cavoodle, who often joins her in sessions. Beyond her therapeutic role, she embraces her identity as a wife, fur mama, and friend, embodying the essence of compassion and empathy. As a spirituality seeker and trashy TV aficionado, she brings a unique blend of warmth, relatability, and humour to her practice, believing wholeheartedly in the power of laughter for healing. Proudly part of the LGBTQIA+ community herself, she understands firsthand the importance of creating affirming spaces where everyone's story can be heard. Additionally, she hosts two podcasts, "Inside the Therapy Room" and "Beyond the Surface" where she continues her mission of amplifying voices and stories, demystifying therapy and fostering understanding. She recently launched her eBook, ‘A Shattered Sanctuary: From Fellowship to Freedom’; which is her own story of loving and leaving the church interwoven into her Queerness. Her mission is clear: to provide solace and support to those grappling with religious trauma and to empower individuals within the LGBTQIA+ community to reclaim their narratives and live authentically. Connect with Sam: Website – www.anchoredcounsellingservices.com.auInstagram – https://www.instagram.com/anchoredcounsellingservices/Facebook – https://www.facebook.com/anchoredcounsellingservicesTikTok – https://www.tiktok.com/@anchoredcounselling?is_from_webapp=1&sender_device=pcLinkedIn – https://www.linkedin.com/in/anchoredcounsellingservices/ Sam's podcasts:Inside The Therapy Room – https://inside-the-therapy-room.captivate.fm/Beyond the Surface – https://beyond-the-surface.captivate.fm/Share your thoughts with me over on Instagram or via my website. Ep 250: The realities of perfectionism
Perfectionism. We end up in the perfectionist loop easily enough ... but what is the true cost?In this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!) I'm delving into this subject and talking about how this constant striving for perfection can leave us feeling like we're never enough (and never will be). You will hear:- The impact of cultural expectations and pressures on our experiences of desiring and striving for perfection- The role of shame in our quest for perfection- Why, as a human, perfection is unachievable long term.I also share a couple of personal stories - from being served an ad for pills that would 'reverse my grey' to a shame-inducing trip to the dentist - to illustrate how these things can play out in real life and how we can navigate them.Because it's less about never experiencing the discomfort of imperfection and more about arming ourselves with the right tools. Ep 249: Lessons from my mistake
In this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!) I'm sharing a personal story about a mistake I made just last week, that illustrates the power of the mind and the narratives that we tell ourselves. While none of us want to make mistakes (it feels yuck, right?) the unavoidable truth is that we will continue to make mistakes until our final days. Why? Because we're human and to be human is to be fallible. So this story is not about lessons in 'how not to make mistakes' but one that explores the nature of self-criticism, curiosity and beliefs. Ep 245: Comparison chews up your joy and spits it out (except when it doesn’t)
Comparison - the thief of joy?It sure can be. And who wants that? The thing is, these human brains of ours are very good at judgment and comparison is judgment wearing a different outfit. So ... what's a human to do?Join me for this episode of SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!) to hear my thoughts on comparison as a thief of joy (except when it isn't). You'll hear:- The 'low stakes' but 'high insight' moment I recently had when comparing myself to others- The link between comparison and shoulds- The link between comparison and shame- Three questions you can ask yourself to dig into comparison in a way that helps you return to your own joy- The importance and role of acknowledging the discomfort comparison brings up- What comparison can point to when it's not a joy thief (and why it can sometimes lead you toward joy)- Some thoughts on comparison-induced guilt and the necessity of exploring the both/and.Mentioned in this episode:Join my email newsletter to be the first to know about all the good stuff coming up in 2024, including in-person workshops, my next free online workshop, SOMA:HOME, the SelfKind Hub and morehttps://ericawebbyoga.ck.page/simpleshiftsShare your thoughts with me over on Instagram or via my website. Ep 244: Stop shrinking to avoid judgment
Dec 20 2023
Ep 244: Stop shrinking to avoid judgment
Fear the judgment of others? That's understandable - it's deeply uncomfortable to be openly or quietly judged. But we potentially do ourselves a disservice if our strategy for remedying that is to shrink or alter ourselves to avoid others' judgments and make them like us.This is what we're exploring today on SelfKind with Erica Webb (that's me!). In this episode you will hear:- Why it can help to acknowledge that people are judging rather than trying to convince yourself they're not- The impact that others' judgments (or the fear of that) can have on our behaviour and internal dialogue- Clues that might show you where you're shrinking or altering yourself out of fear of judgment- Why the short-term relief of discomfort that comes with shrinking and people-pleasing is potentially short-lived- Why acknowledge discomfort as human is important- The role of acknowledging your fear- Whether it's worth trying to 'convince' yourself that you don't care about others' judgments- Whether people pleasing can ever truly be eliminated- Tips for navigating time with family when you find yourself falling into practiced patterns of relating- The role of acknowledging your own judgments of others.Mentioned in this episode:Waitlist for February 2024 round of SOMA:HOMEhttps://www.ericawebb.com.au/soma-homeEpisode 162 of SelfKind with Erica Webb: On guilt, values and joy https://www.ericawebbyoga.com.au/podcast/episode/7cd27919/ep-162-on-guilt-values-and-joyEpisode 95 of SelfKind with Erica Webb: Living a Values-Based life with Laura Jean https://www.ericawebbyoga.com.au/podcast/episode/4e6b530b/ep-95-living-a-values-based-life-with-laura-jeanShare your thoughts with me over on Instagram or via my website.
