On this episode of the podcast, host John Strong welcomes Dr. Jason Rawls back from Ohio. They discuss how youth culture influenced entertainment and education including the history of hip-hop, how to connect with your students via their interests, how the first few weeks of the school year are important and more!  Dr. Rawls is not only a scholar and an educator, but he is also a practitioner of Hip-Hop. Dr. Rawls contributed production on the album Mos Def & Talib Kweli Are Black Star, which was critically acclaimed as one of the best albums of 1998 and was a major force in the late-1990s underground hip hop explosion. Dr. Rawls has also produced and DJ’ed for artists such as the Beastie Boys, Ghostface of WuTang Clan, Capital Steez (Pro Era), Slum Village, Souls of Mischief, 9th Wonder, and Us3. In addition to his work in music, Dr. Rawls holds a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Cincinnati, a master’s degree in education from Ashland University, and an Educational Doctorate in Educational Administration from Ohio University. Dr. Rawls has presented workshops on the music industry, Hip-Hop Education and beat making at several major universities around the country. Sean is joined by Sarah and Nadine for a great discussion about the National Health Education Standards revision process. They discuss why the standards are being revised currently, the progress the task force has made over the past two years, what lies ahead & more!  Nadine Marchessault, MEd, NBCT is the Co-Chair of the National Health Education Standards Task Force. She is also a Health Education Specialist at the Hawaiʻi State Department of Education. Nadine has 17 years of experience in education (PreK-12), which includes service as a teacher and leader. She specializes in health education and mentoring to improve student learning and teacher practice. She is Experienced in designing curriculum, instruction, and assessments aligned to National Health Education Standards. Nadine has facilitated and collaborated with diverse stakeholders to review, adopt, and implement National Health Education Standards in the Hawai‘i State Department of Education. Sarah Sparrow Benes (she/her) is currently an Assistant Professor & Program Coordinator of the School Health Education program at Southern Connecticut State University and SHAPE America's President. She transitioned from her role as an Associate Clinical Profession at Merrimack College in fall 2022. She has an Ed.D. in curriculum and teaching, an Ed.M. in human movement, a master’s degree in public health, and a B.S. in athletic training. Sarah started her career at Boston University as an athletic trainer before transitioning to the role of Physical and Health Education Teacher Prep Program Director. Sarah works in schools locally and nationally, and writes and presents on various health education topics.

For the second year in a row, Sean is joined by guests from our recruitment and retention task force to discuss For the Love of Health and Physical Education (HPE) Week! Emily Jones is a Professor of Physical EducationTeacher Education, in the School of Kinesiology and Recreation at IllinoisState University. She is the current chair of the SHAPE America Recruitment andRetention Task Force and serves at the state level as the chair of the IAHPERDHigher Education Committee. At Illinois State she is program director for theundergraduate PE teacher education and coordinates the fully online master’s inPhysical Education Pedagogy sequence at ISU. Dr. Jones conducts researchrelated to recruitment into the field of physical education including the needto increase the diversity of those entering the teaching force. She alsoconducts research related to school- and community-based physical activityprograms and initiatives that enhance health and wellness.  Ben Schwamberger is an Associate Professor of Health andPhysical Education, in the Human Performance Department at Minnesota StateUniversity, Mankato (MSU, Mankato). He currently serves on the SHAPE AmericaProfessional Preparation Council as well as the Recruitment and Retention TaskForce and is an active member of his state association MNSHAPE. At MSU, Mankatohe is the undergraduate program coordinator for the Health and PhysicalEducation program. Dr. Schwamberger’s research interests relate to physicaleducation and physical activity of homeschool students. Prior to his positionin higher education, Dr. Schwamberger was an elementary and high schoolphysical educator and taught within the United States as well as abroad.

On the podcast, they discuss their careers, the journey to creating this text, why self-advocacy is important for ALL students, and more!  Ruth ChildsRuth Childs, MFA, is a professor at State University of New York at Brockport. She has been at the College of Brockport Department of Theatre and Music Studies since 2001. Her teaching specialties include public speaking, acting, voice and speech, improv, and the politics of theatre. Childs served as regional chair of the National Playwriting Program for Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival and has been a respondent and reader for national and regional playwriting awards. She was awarded the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Gold Medallion. Childs is a public speaking consultant as well as a specialist in teaching self-advocacy. She directs the self-advocacy program at Camp Abilities each summer. Lauren J. LiebermanLauren J. Lieberman, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Service Professor in the Kinesiology Department at the State University of New York at Brockport (SUNY) in adapted physical education. She started her career teaching at the Perkins School for the Blind in the Deafblind program. She is co-director of the Institute on Movement Studies for Individuals with Visual Impairments or Deafblindness (IMSVI) (see www.brockport.edu/IMSVI) and founder and director of Camp Abilities, an educational sports camp for children with visual impairments. Lieberman has published over 193 peer-reviewed articles and 21 books and has been an invited guest speaker in the U.S. and internationally. She is a Research Fellow with the International Federation of Adapted Physical Activity and has won awards from numerous organizations for her work.   Mary Connolly Mary Connolly, BS, Med, is a professor at Cambridge College and adjunct professor at Curry College. She is an accomplished health education professional whose career spans nearly four decades and includes teaching and administration in public schools and higher education. Connolly served on the committee to revise the National Health Education Standards and is a member of the Massachusetts Interdisciplinary Health Education and Human Services Advisory Council and the American School Health Association (ASHA), Coordinator’s Committee, and is a reviewer for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education. She presents at numerous state and national conferences and is a member of SHAPE America, AAHE, SOPIE, ASHA, ASCD, and MAAHPERD.

Blackshear, Ed.D., is an equity scholar who specializes in health, physical activity, and education. She is an assistant professor of kinesiology and the coordinator of the physical education teacher education program at Towson University. Before her current role, Dr. Blackshear taught for 17 years in public, private, charter, and international schools in the United States, Egypt, and Thailand. At the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she held a three-year post in which she worked to prevent type II diabetes among middle school youth in the most extensive school-based physical activity intervention in the United States. Dr. Blackshear's commitment to equity is evident in her work that appears in Quest, Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy, Journal of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities, and numerous other journals. She is actively engaged with SHAPE America, SHAPE Maryland, Partnership for a Healthier America, Physical and Health Education Canada, International Association for Physical Education in Higher Education (AIESEP), USA Lacrosse, PhysEquity, and Baltimore City Public Schools. Dr. Blackshear's research has garnered national and international attention. She has begun to have an impact on institutional change, policy, and practice, as evidenced by consultation requests from organizations and agencies that seek her help in their goal of creating culturally responsive, equitable environments. Critical Race Studies in Physical Education furthers Dr. Blackshear's unwavering commitment to confront and disrupt structures that do not serve Black youth in health, physical activity, and education. Brian Culp, Ed.D., is a professor and department chair in the WellStar College of Health and Human Services at Kennesaw State University. Prior to his current position, Dr. Culp taught at Armstrong Atlantic State University and Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis.  Dr. Culp’s research has incorporated topics under the umbrella of promoting equity. His work has appeared in journals such as Quest, Pedagogy in Health Promotion, Qualitative Health Research, and International Journal of Sports Science & Coaching as well as many other journals and books. He has also worked on projects for organizations such as Physical and Health Education Canada, SHAPE America, the Centers for Disease Control, and the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.   Dr. Culp was inducted as the 34th fellow of the National Association for Kinesiology in Higher Education (NAKHE) in 2019. He is a past vice president and Engaged Scholar Mentor of NAKHE. Other national recognitions have included a dissertation award from the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators; the Hally Beth Poindexter Young Scholar Award from NAKHE; and the Mabel Lee Award, the Social Justice and Diversity Young Professionals Award, and the E.B. Henderson Award from SHAPE America.
