Our Editor's Take

The Besties podcast invites its listeners to join what the hosts consider the best video game club. While the format has changed many times over the years, the premise remains the same. Throughout the year, the hosts explore and investigate the newest video game releases. When December comes around, they begin a massive tournament. Out of all the games they discussed in the past twelve months, there can only be one winner. Only one game will receive the coveted title of Game of the Year. Champions include fan favorites like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. The conversations on the podcast, while sometimes heated, are also informative and profound. The show helps listeners discover new games to occupy their free time.

The hosts of The Besties have a good amount of experience in the gaming sphere and journalism in general. Chris Plante, Russ Frushtick, and brothers Griffin and Justin McElroy cofounded Polygon. This video game review website now belongs to Vox Media. Chris' work has appeared in the New York Times, Vulture, The Guardian, and others. He also created an NYU course called Intro to Games Journalism. Russ has appeared on CNBC, BBC News, and MTV as a gaming expert and has written for many publications. The McElroy brothers also produce multiple podcasts together.

When The Besties began, every episode was a competition between the hosts. Each introduced a video game they enjoyed playing. Then, they'd try to convince the others that it was the best. At the end of the episode, they would choose a victor. This format usually caused a lot of arguments and disagreements, but it was all a part of the fun. The later structure introduces only one game per episode. All four have to play it and give their detailed reviews. They are knowledgeable and comprehensive but also entertaining. Each of the four has distinctive tastes and preferences, contributing to lively discussions. They do a thorough job investigating each game to help the listeners determine if they want to buy it.
