Episode 208 - Tyg Tyler - Who You Walking With - Part 2
Tyg Taylor is the founder of Wholly Kicks. He likes to ask: What moves you to action? How do you get out of your head and take the first few steps in your walk?  These are the reflections that moved Tyg to become the founder and Executive Director for Wholly Kicks, a 501c(3) serving Aurora and the greater Denver area. In short, Tyg is about action. After over 28 years as a "more traditional" pastor, in the Evangelical Lutheran Church, Tyg turned his focus to serving those on the margin. He felt the call to get out of his head and into the streets to help those experiencing economic disparity. Wholly Kicks is based in Aurora and serves the greater Denver area with 3 primary goals in mind: Promoting the rights and well-being of those experiencing homelessness in everything they do. Supporting Aurora, Colorado and the surrounding Denver Metro area. Focus on reaching those in impoverished areas or at risk of homelessness. Wholly Kicks exists for the purpose of “walking with” those in impoverished areas or those at risk of or, experiencing homelessness. Through the distribution of new shoes and socks, the focus of Wholly Kicks is to mentor and build relationships in “walking with” individuals experiencing economic disparity. /// We're hosting a live even in Denver on April 4. Episode 196 - The Death of Omnipotence and Birth of Amipotence with Rev. Dr. Thomas Jay Oord

Episode 196 - The Death of Omnipotence and Birth of Amipotence with Rev. Dr. Thomas Jay Oord
Get ready for a fun one! In this 196th episode of the Brew Theology Podcast, Ryan and Janel chat with Dr. Thomas J. Oord on reasons we should stop saying "God is omnipotent." Oord suggests a new word, "Amipotence,"which combines two Latin words ami and potens. The first means “love,” and we find it in words like “amicable,” “amity,” and “amigo.” The second is the Latin word for power or influence, and we find it in “potential” and “potency.” Amipotence is pronounced, “am” (as in “Amsterdam”), with a short “i” (as in “it”), and “po-tence” (similar to “moments”). Oord coined this word to stress the priority of love over power in God. Divine love (ami) comes logically and conceptually prior to divine power (potens). Oord believes that we best understand God in general and divine power in particular if we give love pride of place. Love comes first. ///   Thomas Jay Oord is a theologian, philosopher, and scholar of multi-disciplinary studies. He is an award-winning author, and he has written or edited more than thirty books. Oord directs a doctoral program at Northwind Theological Seminary and the Center for Open and Relational Theology. He won the Outstanding Faculty Award twelve times as a full-time professor and now speaks at institutions across the globe. Oord is known for his contributions to research on love, open and relational theology, science and religion, and freedom and relationships for transformation. Oord was raised on a farm in the small community of Othello, Washington. He attended Northwest Nazarene College and graduated in 1988. After four years in pastoral ministry in Walla Walla, Washington, he attended Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. Upon graduating with a Masters of Divinity, he attended Claremont Graduate University in Southern California. He earned a Masters of Arts in Religion and a Ph.D. at Claremont. While pursuing graduate studies, he was a part-time associate pastor in Bloomington, Ca.   Oord taught philosophy at Eastern Nazarene College for three years. In 2002, he returned to the Northwest to teach at his undergraduate alma mater. He taught at Northwest Nazarene University for sixteen years and served as Senior Research Fellow for the university’s Wesley Center. He is a leading theologian in the Wesleyan, Holiness, and Church of the Nazarene traditions. Thomas Jay Oord is an ordained elder and speaks often at churches, conferences, and other settings. He serves in various consulting and administrative roles for academic institutions, scholarly projects, and research teams. Oord and his wife, Cheryl, have three daughters, a son-in-law, and two grandchildren. /// If you are a fan of any of our Brew Theology shows, give this episode a share on the interwebs, rate Brew Theology on iTunes and give BT a brewtastic review! Episode 195 (Mini) - Wholly Kicks - Santa in the Park

Episode 195 (Mini) - Wholly Kicks - Santa in the Park
On Dec 2, the Fourth Annual Wholly Kicks Santa in the Park event will give away 1000 pair of kicks! We got the pleasure of interviewing Tyg Taylor and learning more about this great event. We wanted to share this beautiful story with you as we start the holiday season. If you'd like to help out, you can donate at whollykicks.org. Wholly Kicks is a non-profit organization whose presence in Aurora, Colorado, and the Denver Metro area, exists for the purpose of “walking with” those in impoverished areas or those at risk of or, experiencing homelessness. Through the distribution of new shoes and socks, the focus of Wholly Kicks is to mentor and build relationships in “walking with” individuals experiencing economic disparity. /// Tyg”er” Taylor who is the Founder and Executive Director of Wholly Kicks. Tyg founded Wholly Kicks in November 2018 after a curious conversation in an alley with a man wearing a bowtie who reflected with him about what it means to walk in the shoes life has given to you… Tyg grew up in Steamboat Springs, attended Colorado State University and Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in the Bay Area, before landing in Monument, CO for 28 years as pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church. During his time in Monument, Tyg spent many years working amongst those experiencing homelessness in Colorado Springs. Tyg’s experiences of visiting homeless camps, hanging out in the park and at low rent motels, learning the systems and culture of homelessness, creating friendships and developing leaders amongst the community of those living outdoors and on the street, led to the vision of moving to North Aurora to work as a street pastor along Colfax, working with other non-profits, and the development of Wholly Kicks. Wholly Kicks asks the question: Who You Walking With? Tyg loves spending time on the street in North Aurora and East Denver, meeting new faces and kindling relationships with those whom he has met over the years. Tyg’s greatest joy of leading Wholly Kicks is creating leaders right from those experiencing homelessness, to run new shoe events! Tyg sees his life as a mission to Walk With Others: using his heart, his experience and relationships, his truck and resources, his boldness and trust, his limitations and possibilities, to live a life that serves and loves others. /// If you are a fan of any of our Brew Theology shows, give this episode a share on the interwebs, rate Brew Theology on iTunes and give BT a brewtastic review! Episode 194 - Engaged Buddhism via Thich Nhat Hanh with Dr. Lisa Pettitt

Episode 194 - Engaged Buddhism via Thich Nhat Hanh with Dr. Lisa Pettitt
Get ready for some Zen! Janel and Ryan chat with Dr. Lisa Pettitt on this timely episode channeling the late Thich Nhat Hanh's Engaged Buddhism on the 194th BT pod! Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh was a Vietnamese Buddhist monk. He founded the ENGAGED BUDDHISM movement including the School of Youth and Social Service, a grassroots relief organization of 10,000 volunteers based on the Buddhist principles of non-violence and compassionate action. “In engaged action, you don’t have to die to get your message across. We have to remember that even if our protest is very strong, protesting may not be able to remove the fear, the anger, and the craving in those we are protesting against. Real protest is to help them wake up and take up a new direction. To do that is real action. We can do it by setting an example. You create a community of peace and true solidarity. You consume in a way that protects the planet. You speak and listen in a way that transforms anger and division. You live simply and yet you are happy. This is a radical way of peace making. You embody good health for yourself and for the world and live in such a way that proves a future can be possible.” /// Dr. Lisa Pettitt - Dr. Pettitt has a BA in Psychology with a Theology minor from the College of St. Benedict and a PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of Denver. Dr. Pettitt was ordained in Vietnamese Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing in 2011. She is a feminist who has learned about disability and self-advocacy from her sister with Down Syndrome and anti-racism and intersectionality from wise and generous women and men of color. Lisa teaches yoga, volunteers with high school students around topics of environmental activism and positive youth development, and spends time in contemplation and deep listening.   /// If you are a fan of any of our Brew Theology shows, give this episode a share on the interwebs, rate Brew Theology on iTunes and give BT a brewtastic review! Nov 8 2023
Episode 193 - MLK: Interfaith Hero with Rev. Dr. Josh Ritter & Sharyl West Loeung
On the 193rd episode of the Brew Theology Podcast, Ryan and Janel chat with Rev. Dr. Josh Ritter and Rev. Sharyl West Loeung about MLK and his Interfaith world. As we honor the legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., an ordained baptist minister, and pastor, we remember his work as a civic interfaith leader who collaborated with many from other traditions and faiths such as Dorothy Day, Thich Nhat Hanh, Rabbi Abraham Heschel, Paul Tillich, and Gandhi. Many know Dr. King as the head of the civil rights movement, but fewer know of his significant interfaith friendships and influences that shaped him into the leader that he came to be. Dr. King also championed the practice of nonviolence and nonviolent communication, which he also learned from his interfaith connections. /// Rev. Dr. Josh Ritter, M.Div., Ph.D., is a communication consultant and a trainer and facilitator of public deliberation who focuses on risk mitigation, diversity education, and conflict transformation. He is an interfaith activist, a minister of 20 years, a contemplative Christian, and co-founder and co-owner of Kardia House Consulting, LLC. Josh focuses on civic interfaith leadership and religious communication in the public sphere, and his real passion is the practice of engaged contemplative spirituality and reframing the ways we approach religion, justice, communication, and the spiritual imagination. His most recent publication is his co-authored book, Following the Way of Wisdom Jesus, that focuses on communication as a mindfulness practice of generosity. Sharyl West Loeung is a TEDx speaker, author, consultant, event producer, and social entrepreneur who facilitates spaces of belonging where connection, collaboration, and creativity can flourish.
