Our Editor's Take

On the Wind Sailing is a sailor's interview podcast. The hosts are professional sailors Andy Schell, August Sandberg, and Emma Garschagen.

The cohosts of the podcast know both the joys and trials of sailing well. They want to discover what motivates other sailors. They discover that sailing is more than an activity for others, too. It is a way of life for all sailors. Sailing can feel like an escape for some. Others think it makes one confront themself. One's character, grit, and know-how may keep one alive. When there is no room for error, crews feel they must be in harmony or face disaster.

One podcast episode is all about the Duracell Project. The Duracell is a retired racing boat that circumnavigated the globe twice. Matt and Janni Steverson are refitting it into a liveaboard cruiser. They chronicle the process for their YouTube channel. The channel has over 80 thousand followers. In another episode, the cohosts have a conversation with Cosima Franchini. After working on historic tall ships, Franchini started the Olympia Sailing Company. She brings guests on tours of the Puget Sound aboard the Pterodactyl, a hand-built schooner.

On the Wind Sailing also shares interviews with sailors based outside the US. Mats Grimsæth is a Norwegian man who, at 15, circumnavigated the island of Spitsbergen. It's the main island in the Svalbard Archipelago. Grimsæth was the youngest person ever to do so. Another episode is about Mark Sinclair. He spent 20 years in the Royal Australian Navy, after which he turned to racing. Sinclair shares his love of racing and talks about sailing before the use of satellites.

Many sailors might believe that time on the ground is still best spent thinking about sailing. On the Wind Sailing might be a great podcast choice for those individuals. Listeners who like to hear about passion projects may find inspiration here.
