Our Editor's Take

The One Heart One Vision podcast informs and inspires women with disabilities, focusing on vision loss. It's one of the resources One Heart One Vision, Inc. provides to blind and low-vision women in underserved communities. Hosts Rasheta Bunting and Jovan Campbell cofounded the nonprofit and this show. The organization's treasurer, Stephanie Foxworth-Johnson, later joined as cohost.

Podcast host Rasheta is a civic engagement organizer and special educator. She's president of her local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. Jovan lost her sight from diabetic retinopathy. She's Chair of the New York State Diabetes Action Network. Stephanie is a former educator and foster parent. Vision loss doesn't stop them from being visionaries. These women have advanced degrees, informed opinions, and selfless motivations.

One Heart One Vision includes both serious and fun conversations. Breast cancer, asylum seekers, God, and disabled voters are essential topics. Rasheta discusses challenging, real decisions as a single mom with blindness to teenagers.

The women analyze "blended relationships" in which one person has a disability. Unreciprocated love is more prevalent among people whose disability lowers their self-esteem. The hosts encourage women to act like they're a gift to their partner. Rasheta says that it's conviction, not conceit. To them, it's all about putting things into perspective.

Hearing more than one voice about blindness educates listeners. Each host's story is special. Rasheta's sight loss was gradual from retinitis pigmentosa. She was a sighted woman for decades. Jovan acquired diabetes at age 12 and became blind at age 25. She requires partial wheelchair use. An accident caused Stephanie's blindness. Surgery restored partial vision. Their admirable guests include Ms. Blind Diva 2023 Kiana V. Glanton and disability advocate Kathy Collins.

The hosts want listeners to know that disabled women are "like other women and then some." They accomplish exceptional things without one of their senses. The One Heart One Vision podcast and their outreach platform are chief among them.
