Beginning of the year I started seeing a guy.  He seemed great.  Said all the right things.  Good in bed.  Fun to be around.   When he heard about my sexual assaults he became super protective and wanted to hurt anyone that caused me harm.  He was so proud of never sexually assaulting a woman or being physically abusive.  He had two daughters and seemed like a great dad.  I was a little concerned that he had two ex wife's but things don't always work out.  Then a month and a half into really seeing each other regularly he told me something terrible he did to me.  He told me via text message and then proceeded to call me "a fucking bitch" and blame me for it twice even though the facts were clear it wasn't something I did.  He slut shamed me and just became extreme abusive in what he was saying to me.  Over the next week or so I told him repeatedly that I couldn't be with someone that handled serious conversations the way he had and that I did not deserve to be disparaged in such a way.  He continued to contact me for several months via text message that were extremely harassing to the point of threatening.  I even consult law enforcement to figure out next steps if it continued.  Luckily he has seemed to have stopped and I didn't have to go down that path.But it made me think about how often men only think they cause harm to others if it is physical.  This guy was so proud he would never hurt a woman.  But he hurt me.  He terrorized me.  At least 3 different times I asked him to stop contacting me in different ways.  I started watching the show "I am a Stalker" and all those men were the same way.  Saying they never would harm a woman yet that is all they did.  Completely unaware of the effects their actions have on women.  So I asked my dear friend Kristen Kozelsky to join for an episode to discuss this topic.  Sorry Chuck you didn't want an episode about you but well you got one. TRIGGER WARNING:20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States.  We always ask why the women stay.  But we seldom truly hold their abusers accountable and ask them why they abuse.  Abusers manipulate and control their victims making it so that they really can't leave.   There is more than physical abuse.  There is emotional abuse, financial abuse and sexual abuse that all go hand in hand keeping the victim in the situation.  My guest Donna Cohen has been on the board of Peaceful Paths for decades.  This organization helps women get out of these situations.  But it's not as easy as it sounds. Domestic abuse can happen to anyone.  It does not matter their social status.  And often times the act of leaving these situations can often be the most dangerous times for the victim.  This is when the abuser fears loosing control of their victim so they up the anti.   As a friend watching someone important in your life being abused it's hard to know what to do to help.  You can provide support and assistance but often the victim is in so deep that they see that help almost as harm.  They don't know how to accept it because it's so far outside of their norm.  It hurts to watch the help you are trying to give them be rejected and know you only have so much to give before you go down with them.  In this episode we discuss all of this.  I have been in emotionally and sexually abusive romantic relationships and friendships.  I know from a small window what it's like but I've also watched friends that are so emotionally beat down they don't know how to get out no matter how much I and others have tried to help and then blamed us for being the problem.
