Our Editor's Take

The Shujin Academy VGM Club podcast features some of the most iconic songs in retro gaming history. This podcast may make video game music (VGM) fans nostalgic. The title comes from the school in the Persona 5 video game. Professor Tom is the host. He plays songs from countless titles, even modern games. Every episode of this VGM podcast pays tribute to songs tied to many classic games and themes. Fans of games like Pokemon, Persona 5, and Shin Megami Tensei will love this video game music podcast. From invigorating fighting game main themes to 8-bit NES tunes, there is a jam for every gamer.

Professor Tom pays close attention to songs from every game, not the classics alone. Incredible RPGs like Final Fantasy VII deserve special thanks. But there are even some bad games with fantastic music. Shujin Academy VGM Club features various games, including some that received terrible reception. Music and gameplay elevate one another, but a bad game should never ruin a good song. By highlighting overlooked titles, gamers can discover amazing pieces for the first time.

Shujin Academy VGM Club also recognizes games that excel at creating specific atmospheres. Games with great soundtracks can transport players anywhere from New York to Tokyo. Music is crucial, whether it's a heist in Persona 5 or walking through high school in Persona 3. Not only do these songs convey tone, but they can also tie to gameplay. Classics like Phoenix Wright use music to heighten tension. Podcast listeners may add plenty of retro songs to their playlists.

Nintendo, Sega, and Sony fans alike can all find something to love on this podcast. From pixels to modern-day technology, there is no shortage of incredible soundtracks. New episodes of Shujin Academy VGM Club come out every few weeks. The episode descriptions name all the cuts played in each segment.

Episode 39 - Four Short Episodes of Shujin Academy VGM Club
I come up with a lot of ideas, but all of them aren’t a good fit for a full-length episode, so this episode is actually four mini-episodes. Each one is devoted to an idea that works better in small bites than it would in a longer episode. Enjoy! Congratulations in advance go out to fellow VGM podcast bro Martyrus for reaching 100 episodes of his excellent show RE-VGM, a great podcast where he explores the world of arranged video game music. I try to catch every episode, and I’d recommend it to you, too! You can find it at www.re-vgm.com or https://re-vgm.blubrry.net/.  Special thanks for this episode goes out to: Fellow VGM podcaster Jameson of barSILENCE podcast for contributing cover art. Episode 38 - The Not-So-Contractually-Obligated After-Halloween Mixtape

Episode 38 - The Not-So-Contractually-Obligated After-Halloween Mixtape
Halloween has come and gone, but spooky season lives on in our hearts all year round, so this is a great set of creepy tracks that I didn’t quite get out the door before Halloween. (But I meant to, and then life got in the way.)  We here in the VGM podcast community have seen Spotify pull down some of our episodes recently without any explanation as to why. My Castlevania bonus episode was removed, as were episodes of fellow VGM podcasts A VGM Journey and Nerd Noise Radio. None of us know exactly why we were targeted in general or why it was those specific episodes, and no one (not even a robot) at Spotify has reached out to tell us. So, if you’re listening to this on a podcast service that’s NOT Spotify, good job and thank you and keep on doing what you’re doing. And if you’re listening to this podcast on Spotify, you may need to find an alternative podcatcher to keep listening to us. I personally use Podbean and Pocket Casts both; I know Spotify is convenient, but I think both of those are better podcast apps, since they’re custom-built for podcast consumption. Podbean is currently the best place to find me, since that’s my hosting company, but any dedicated podcatcher you use should pick me up. Special thanks for this episode goes out to: Fellow VGM podcaster Jameson of barSILENCE podcast for contributing cover art. You can and should find barSILENCE wherever you download podcasts, and check out his website at barSILENCE.com.  LongTones, an experimental electronic jazz project that provides promotional consideration to Professor Tom. New episodes are released once or twice a month depending on how often I get them done, and they premiere on Thursday mornings on your favorite podcatcher and on 8beats.co, the internet's number one game music radio station. I’m also now appearing on Terra Player, the new app that’s a destination for gaming podcasts and other content, so you can check me out there.  During the show, I mentioned my April Fool’s 2023 episode. [RE-UPLOAD] Episode 11 - What Could Go Wrong
[NOTE: This is a re-upload of an older episode that I accidentally deleted. While it's not my best show, and definitely not my most popular episode ever, I'm reposting it for the sake of complete-ness.] This episode is devoted to some ominous songs. The episode title does not include a question mark, and that is intentional.  Special thanks to fellow VGM podcaster Bedroth the Chinbeard for providing the voice of North Tennessee State University. He’s the host of Very Good Music, which you can check out at https://www.podbean.com/podcast-detail/ykr76-bda6e/Very-Good-Music-A-VGM-Podcast. You can find him on Twitter at @VGMpod. There's an episode of the Pixel Beat podcast that would make an excellent double feature with this one. If you liked this episode, and you’re not done with the downbeat VGM yet, check that one out over at https://pixelbeatpod.buzzsprout.com/1797351/10461275-074-a-cold-dark-night.   If you want to reach me, you can email me at shujinacademyvgmclub@gmail.com. You can find me on Twitter at @ShujinVGMClub, and on Instagram at ShujinAcademyVGMClub. Please leave me a five star rating on iTunes or Spotify or wherever you’re finding this episode.
