The host of Dreamful Bedtime Stories didn't set out to create a podcast. When she started recording herself telling stories, it was for personal use only. Jordan Blair was having difficulty finding good tales to put her two daughters to sleep. She was looking for the right combination of soft music, a soothing voice, and stories suited for kids. But when Blair couldn't find anything to her exact liking, she decided she'd do it herself. With a background in arts, theater, and also as a children's librarian, she figured she could do a good job.
While Dreamful Bedtime Stories started as a podcast for Blair's kids, it is in no way only for children. The host makes a point to mention that it's for anyone who needs a little help falling asleep at night. Each episode is anywhere between 30 minutes to an hour. It has little to no introduction, using Blair's softest tone throughout. It may help listeners drift off to slumberland.
With the help of gentle background music, Blair tells the listeners a new tale every night. Some episodes revolve around classic fairy tales, like Peter Pan, Beauty and the Beast, Puss in Boots, and The Frog Prince. Others focus on Greek myths or retelling novels like The Great Gatsby and Sherlock Holmes. Some original stories and tales about the twelve Zodiac signs are in the mix, too.
The host of Dreamful Bedtime Stories never sounds like she's reading from a page. Instead, Blair's calming yet animated voice makes the stories feel almost like plays. She brings the listeners through a narrative with highs, lows, and surprises. But thanks to her gentle tone and delicate music, it is a compelling formula to induce a deep slumber. At the end of each episode, there's a section where the music plays on without words. So in case the story wasn't enough to evoke rest, the music may help listeners get to sleep.
