Justin Soderberg hosts the Capes and Tights Podcast. It began as a set of episodes about comic books that Justin hosted on a different podcast.

In the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin speaks to comic book creators about their work. In one episode, he interviews Jordan Blum, Tim Seeley, and actor Patton Oswalt. They are the creators of the comic books Minor Threats and The Alternates. Justin also interviews editor and comic book writer Joe Corallo. Joe is the cocreator of the comics She Said Destroy and Dahlia in the Dark. In the interview, he shares the cartoons and comics that inspired him as a young fan.

The Capes and Tights Podcast is not only about comic books. Justin also reviews movies that might appeal to listeners. He usually does this with a special guest. Justin reviews the 1986 movie Howard the Duck with comic book retailer Paul Eaton. In another episode, Justin and Paul discuss the movie Killer Klowns from Outer Space. Justin also collaborates with his wife, Taylor Soderberg. They review the first two films in the Guardians of the Galaxy series.

The Capes and Tights Podcast covers topics in comic book pop culture as well. Some episodes provide coverage of events like the Little Giant Comics Old School Comic Show in Concord, New Hampshire. There are also sets of episodes with specific themes, like "Star Wars Week" and "Horror Week." The "TMNT Week" episodes focus on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise.

#159: Jordan Hart and David Ebeltoft - Writers of The Cabinet

This week on the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes Jordan Hart and David Ebeltoft to the program to discuss their comic book series The Cabinet and much more! Hart is the creator of the Eisner and Harvey Award-nominated comic series Ripple Effects. Centered on an invulnerable superhero with type 1 diabetes, the story was placed on the American Library Association’s Best Graphic Novels for Adults reading list and was a finalist for the Excellence in Graphic Literature Awards. More recently he has worked on the supernatural adventure series The Cabinet with co-creator David Ebeltoft and artist Chiara Raimondi. Ebeltoft is an accomplished screenwriter working mostly within the thriller, horror, and drama genres. His work has been hailed as "suspenseful", "emotionally-driven", and "decidedly chilling”. David released Here Alone in 2016 and his upcoming film Blood for Dust hits theaters on April 19, 2024. Their comic The Cabinet debuted in February from Image Comics. In the vibrant, tongue-in-cheek adventure series, atypical teen Avani and midwestern jock Trent teleport across a post-Cold War landscape to collect bizarre relics. Why? Well, because they need to summon the arcane powers of a resplendent 17th-century cabinet to fix a teeny-tiny mistake the last time Avani used it... unleashing an ancient evil from its prison and accidentally slaughtering her parents. The third issue hits shelves on April 10 with a fourth coming May 15 and a trade paperback debuting in October.

Hard-boiled detective Dick Tracy is searching for evidence that proves Alphonse "Big Boy" Caprice is the city's most dangerous crime boss. He may have found the key to unraveling the crimelord's illegal empire in Breathless Mahoney, an enigmatic barroom singer who has witnessed some of Caprice's crimes firsthand. However, she seems more set on stealing Dick away from his girlfriend, Tess, than helping him solve the case of his career. Warren Beatty produced, directed and starred in the film alongside Al Pacino, Madonna, Glenne Headly and Charlie Korsmo. Dustin Hoffman, James Keane, Charles Durning, William Forsythe, Seymour Cassel, Mandy Patinkin, Catherine O’Hara, Ed O'Ross, James Caan, James Tolkan and Dick Van Dyke also appeared. The film hit theaters on June 15, 1990.

The comic book psychiatrist joins a sorcerer and his assistant against the ageless Morgan le Fay in the made-for-tv movie from 1978. Dr. Strange was written and directed by Philip DeGuere based on the Marvel Comics character created by Steve Ditkoand Stan Lee. The film was made for television as a pilot for a possible television show spearheaded by Lee. Dr. Strange stars Peter Hooten in the title role, along with Jessica Walter as Morgan Le Fay, Eddie Benton as Clea Lake, Clyde Kusatsu as Wong, Philip Sterling as Dr. Frank Taylor, and John Mills as Thomas Lindmer. The film debut on September 6, 1978 on CBS. It was released twice on VHS in the United States, in 1987 and 1995, and also had multiple foreign releases. Dr. Strange was later released on DVD in the United States and Canada on November 1, 2016, and on Blu-ray for a limited time on April 26, 2022, by Shout! Factory. This week on the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes back comic book retailer Paul Eaton to the program to discuss the 1989 Punisher movie. Based on the Marvel comic book, Punisher begins with Frank Castle as a respected police officer dedicated to eradicating the Mafia's influence -- that is, until the mob responds with a lethal car bomb that decimates Castle's family. Now, filled with rage and presumed dead from the horrific explosion, Castle takes to the city's underground sewer tunnels to bring his own brutal brand of vigilante justice to the streets and wreak vengeance on those who killed his family. Punisher was directed by Mark Goldblatt, written by Boaz Yakin, and stars Dolph Lundgren as Frank Castle / The Punisher and Louis Gossett Jr. as Detective Jake Berkowitz. The film was given a worldwide theatrical release, except in the United States, Sweden, and South Africa on October 5, 1989. It was originally given an August 1989 release in the US, with trailers even created, but was due to New World's financial difficulties the film was pulled from that date. Eventually the film was sold to Lionsgate (then Live Entertainment) for a direct-to-video release in April 1991. Overall, the film earned $30 million, on a budget of $9 million. It is based on the Marvel comic book series of the same name, a spin-off of the X-Menfranchise. It was produced by New World Entertainment and Marvel Entertainment Group. #148: Brian McAuley - Curse of the Reaper, Candy Cain Kills Author

This week on the Capes and Tights Podcast, Justin Soderberg welcomes Brian McAuley to the program to discuss his books Curse of the Reaper, Candy Cain Kills and more! Brian grew up in Weird, NJ on a steady diet of Goosebumps books and Are You Afraid of the Dark? episodes. He received his BA in Creative Writing and Horror Theory from NYU’s Gallatin School of Individualized Study before getting his MFA in Film from Columbia University. As a WGA screenwriter, Brian has written five films for the Lifetime Network in addition to writing and producing the award-winning thriller Dismissed for BoulderLight Pictures. He sold his TV series pitch Affliction to Syfy Network in a pilot development deal and penned an episode of Fuller House for Netflix. Brian’s debut novel Curse of the Reaper was published through Simon & Schuster and named one of the Best Horror Books of 2022 by Esquire. His Christmas horror novella Candy Cain Kills released on November 14, 2023 through Shortwave Publishing. His short fiction and non-fiction have appeared in Dark Matter Magazine, Nightmare Magazine, and Shortwave Magazine. Brian McAuley is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Screenwriting at the Sidney Poitier New American Film School of Arizona State University. Jacoby Salcedo is a comic book illustrator who is based in Portland, Oregon. He is the co-creator of the Harper Collins YA graphic novel Frontera with frequent collaborator, Julio Anta. He is also the artist on Dark Horse miniseries, It's Only Teenage Wasteland with writer Curt Pires. Jacoby has also been featured in multiple comic anthologies such as DC's Legion of Bloom, Panel X Panel, Graphic Mundi's Covid Chronicles, and A Wave Blue World Young Men in Love.
