CPP Sideshow #125: Katherine Rye Jewell – Author of LIVE From The Underground – A History Of College Radio
For well over a year before it came out, Jacques has been following on social media, the process and progress of author Katherine Rye Jewell while writing: LIVE From The Underground – A History Of College Radio. As Katherine would unearth believe to be lost treasures (like CMJ charts, schools play list from 1978, articles in favor of censorship for a college radio station from the same colleges student new paper) she’d post these finds and allow you to ride shotgun through every step of the way. Being a tiny world, Katherine is a professor at Fitchburg State … The same Fitchburg State (somehow) Jacques graduated from AND where he was a DJ on their station WXPL (which is where he met his bandmate/brother John.  And either John or friend of podcast Professor Chris Cook brought Katherine to Jacques’ radar!) This is a DEEP dive into the over-all history of college radio – how senate land grand acts of the 1930s… led to Pixies and Mission Of Burma becoming college music darlings despite EVERYTHING working against college radio from existing – unsupportive school administrations AND student organizations, record companies not seeing them as worth sending free records to … to Tipper Gore – Parent Music Council and the Batman-forsaken FCC! GET THIS BOOK and get it on Audible too! CP Sideshow 122 - TONY V, The Comic, The Legend, The Trivia Question
3/25/24 From losing track of days while playing cards at the infamous Ding Ho comedy club in the early 80s to being the FIRST comedian to perform at Fenway Park (opening for pal Bill Burr in 2023), comedian and actor Tony V has been a Boston Legend for over 40 years. TOMORROW March 25, 2024 at The City Winery in Boston as part of The Boston Comedy Festival, Tony will be getting his Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing all he has done and means to the City of Boston. If there was a fantasy draft of all the comic greats to come out of Boston, Tony is a first- round pick on everyone’s cards. Joe and Jacques saw Tony V and his pal Bobcat at Off Cabot a couple weeks ago and it might have been funniest show they’ve ever seen (and they see lots of shows!) As an actor, Tony’s been in features such as The Town (produced by former CP guest Bill Fay and it premiered also at Fenway) to his BFF’s Misfits and Monsters (in which Tony had a full body wax and was painted blue as is the law to play King Neptune) – Tony is also a beloved comedy teacher (just ask former guest Lauren Simms)! And yes, Tony is a Boston comic over 40 so there was lots of talk about Dick Bucks and the word “integrity”. CP EP 243 -Tigers and Lions and Bobcats ... OH MY!
Been quit the yuk fest last two weeks for Joe and Jacques (SADLY, Biff is on ER this week) - but the numbers of shows they’re gone to and a couple nights of watching Joe’s Plex till 3am … they might have past the legal limit of laughter allowed.   Jacques has had more “booked shows” in the last month then all last year and is hoping his 1 on 1 classes with mentor Mike Koutrobis and working with Jim McCue on HIS podcast and the Boston Comedy Festival (all next week) will lead to more spots coming up.   A week after talking to the legendary comedian/actor Tony V (sideshow drops next week), Joe and Jacques saw him at Off Cabot in Beverly MA … very nice intimate setting … oh, and Tony V’s BFF … Mr. Shakes The Clown, Bobcat Goldthwait. Arguably the best show they have ever been to together … then week later, they (along with Jacques' favorite sister) saw (friend of the podcast) Steve Bjork take his next special … AND Steve’s walk out music was Jacques’ bands latest release, Tucker (off the Trump Era EP on Spotify under Dan Cray)   Couple nites on Joe’s Plex together watching Batman (Adam West), Get Smart, Benny Hill (holds up) … MTV’s 1985 year in review,  LOTS of 70's game shows … too much fun.   Where is Kate Middleton? Whiny dbags on (far right) wanna know what drugs did Sleepy Joe get from Hunter AND will we get dick picks (for the record … we hope so.)  Oh and watch Our Flag Means Death and have a good cry. CPP Sideshow #120 -Dave LaPointe From Complaints & Observations Podcast (aka Who The Hell Is Dave LaPointe)
Dave LaPointe is the host of Jacques’ favorite podcast Complaints & Observations (currently on hiatus) – and where it’s been a minute since C & O’s last episode … Jacques took matters into his own hands and had Dave on CPP!   THIS is a two-part episode (the 2nd to drop … sometime soon is basically Dave explaining how the Euro Football leagues works to Jacques for 90 minutes… per Jacques request.)   But here … Biff and Joe are (sort of) part of the chat as Jacques wouldn’t shut up … again.   Highlights include them chatting THREE … yes (3) … you know the number of points the Patriots had at halftime vs the Falcon’s in SB 51) … the three bits Jacques uses in his stand up that he STOLE (with permission) from Dave that he heard on Dave’s podcast … which is only on hiatus … it is coming back … it is Dave.   GO LISTEN TO ALL EPISODES OF COMPLAINTS AND OBERVATION.   Then hound Dave to start it back up by reaching out to him by CALLING the C & O hotline: 617-657-4736 Also you oan hound him to start C & O back up here: @dave_lapointe78 on IG @complaintspod on IG AND Twitter @DaveLaPointe on FB @Dave_LaPointe on Twitter     Biff on Twitter is @BiffPlaysHockey Joe on Twitter is: @Optigrabber Jacques on Twitter is @CarnivalPodcast and FB @JacquesLambert   Opening: Complaints and Observation opening Jacques unilaterally decided to jack from Dave.    Closing Song: Tucker (from The Trump Era EP 2023) by Dan Cray And Beyond Id

CP Sideshow 119 - JOHN TOBIN - The Funny Guy Running Boston Comedy
John Tobin saw a show at Nick’s Comedy Stop in Boston in 1986 and his life has been running comedy venues ever since.   “Look at him.  He’s Adorable” – John’s aunt at his first hosting gig!   Sure … Boston City Council for Boston’s 6tth District (2002-2010) and has been VP of Community Affairs at North Eastern Univ. since 2010 … but really … he’s never NOT been a key figure in the Boston comedy scene, which IS the great greatest comedy scene in the world.   Graduation Summa Cum Laude from the School Of Dick Doherty (and … AND … The Connecticut School Of Broadcasting) John learned how to run shows, treat people and maybe NOT pay comics using your own made up currency that they can then mimeograph!  (Long live the 3 Dollar Dick Bucks)   From Boston legend Don Gavin to International rock star comic Bill Burr … If you told a joke in Boston in the last 35+ years, you told it at a club or show that John was producing.   A co-founder of the Boston Comedy Festival in 2000 to the new Boston Comedy Awards he started this year, John never stops creating new ways to help grow the scene.  John takes pride and how more and more inclusive the Boston comedy scene is, showcasing more female comics, more comics who are POC and part of the LGBTQ1A+ community.   We’ve been so lucky to have some many hilarious comics on the podcast … none where funnier or hand better BTS comedy stories then John.      There nothing better than live comedy.  Go to a show and say hi to John if he’s there.   John’s On FB @facebook.com/john.m.tobin CPP on IG: @CarnivalPersonnelPodcast and on Twitter: @Carnival Podcast                                                                                             Biff on Twitter is @BiffPlaysHockey Joe on Twitter is: @Optigrabber Jacques on Twitter is @CarnivalPodcast and FB @JacquesLambert   Opening: WKRP parody by @Model_CHP3Y (Twitter and Youtube)   Closing Song: Capo / Lull by Dan Cray and Beyond Id

CP EP 240 - Taylor Swift IS A National Treasure Damn It!
Just Joe and Jacques as Biff has “tech issues” or … better things to do (and who would blame him…)   Chat the great guest we’ve had of late and some of the next few sideshows coming up.,.    Chat the passing of legendary Carl Weathers … Apollo Creed through 2023 season 3 of the Mandalorian.  Also, talk SNL original cast member - Garrett Morris getting his Star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame (and Jacques insist on again telling his story of having breakfast with Morris in 2007)   Jacques kid had his heart broken and learned a great lesson … being a sports fan SUCKS and never get your hopes up as they (like millions) were SCAMMED by the MLS and the football powers to be who promoted for 2 months the big Messi v. Ronaldo.  Jacques pulls him from school early, get his snacks ready … paid for the MLS season pass on Apple TV … only to see them both sitting this game out. BBBBOOOOOOO!!!!   But at least we all have Taylor Swift in the superbowl cause according to the right …it’s all a biden/nfl plan to help Joe win by …you know … it’s too stupid to even type … but we at CPP truly think Taylor is just a great person and we are delighted to see her success … and her boyfriend is also dreamy.   Ted the prequal to … Ted now streaming (which STARS Jacques pal, Scott Grimes as a 1993 typical … slightly racist … Boston Dad.)  It’s fantastic.  Joe also insist all watch the Netflix doc, “We Are The World” about the recording of that song … We Are The World. Maria Dennis – The 5 - 2 Giant Of Hockey (aka The Franchise)
Maria Dennis – Sr. Legal Counsel and Sr. Director of Player Health And Safety for the NHLPA (yeah, THAT NHLPA) is our guest this week. Are we bias? Yes.  Is Maria a dear friend Biff and Jacques have admired and have skated with for close to 3 decades? Yes. So, when WE say, the contributions to woman’s hockey Maria has made since the early 80’s (on and off the ice) truly make her the shoulders every proceeding generations is standing on … that’s expected. But when writers from The Hockey News, ESPN and USA Hockey laud over her like we do … you know it’s true. From being only 1 of 2 girls in organized checking hockey in Connecticut in the mid-70’s to Yale teammates labeling her “The Franchise” in the 80’s to being on the 1st USA Woman’s National Team in 1990 (winning Silver in Ottawa) Maria (who still plays) had an amazing playing career and since 2011 is having equally impressive and important career as a hockey executive. Maria and the NHLPA are leading the way in professional sports with the first of its kind program: First Line.  A player driven mental health program that strives to teach players about topics such as depression, anxiety, substance use and self-harm.  To hear the pride and passion in Maria’s voice talking about this program lets you know as great a player and lawyer she is … she’s even a better person. We’re calling this PART ONE as we’d love Maria to come back on soon and maybe with her mom and dad who were way ahead of the curve on inclusion and diversity in hockey and in life.   Follow Maria on Twitter @HockeyMaria CPP on IG: @CarnivalPersonnelPodcast and on Twitter: @Carnival Podcast                                                                                            Biff on Twitter is @BiffPlaysHockey Joe on Twitter is: @Optigrabber Jacques on Twitter is @CarnivalPodcast and FB @JacquesLambert   Opening Song: Hartford Whaler Fight Song by Brass Bonanza!   Closing Song: Other Break by Beyond Id

CP EP 238 - Knife Fights With Grandma
In midst of Snow-Magedon in Boston, we record this week’s podcast and chat Jacques little guy telling the school the cat scratches on his torso was via a knife fight with his grandmother.   Do YOU know what 3 Kings Day (Little Christmas) is … Joe does… sort of.   Joe and Jacques ring in the New Year by watching the 1977 classic Smokey And The Bandit as well as an episode of Streets Of San Francisco … and Norm McDonald on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire as Norms pal Kato Kaelin.   Biff talks some bad breaks in homeland of Japan with earthquake and air plane accidents.  On happy note, Biff relays a great “ABC Afterschool Special” and how he and his HS pals tried to pull a stunt off a drunk teacher … classic.   ALSO … Biff is crazy jacked about the launch of the PWHL (Pro Woman’s Hockey). Jacques chats his sons love for AC Milan and Biff saw Pele play in person AND the start of the PWHL!   Why do people say Boston is racist … Give 3 part doc on Max’ “A Murder In Boston.”   Jacques explains his “Guy Math” win (win?) with Verizon. On stand-up front, Jacques chatted his zoom sessions with (former guest) Lauren Sims and how (other recent guest) Wayne Russell joining the KO Comedy club community.   CPP on IG: @CarnivalPersonnelPodcast and on Twitter: @Carnival Podcast                                                                                            Biff on Twitter is @BiffPlaysHockey Joe on Twitter is: @Optigrabber Jacques on Twitter is @CarnivalPodcast and FB @JacquesLambert   Opening: Gomer by Dan Cray and Beyond Id   Closing Song: Struggle by Beyond Id (1992)

CP Sideshow 117 - 2023 Happy Look Back – 2024 Look Ahead
We end a really good year of the podcast by looking back at a few things that went right in our lives this year… and a look ahead of to fun stuff we hope happens. Biff – Successful year of reconnections (having gone to his HS reunion in Hawaii), reconnected with old friends in Japan when he took his son on a trip to the home land (his sons first trip to the land of the rising Sun.)  AND … Biff got a sweet new rescue puppy (that’s about 120lbs now) and yeah she barks a things at night but that’s her job and she super sweet! Looking ahead … another Japan trip! Joe – Putting faces to names with Biff (the CP outing in August to Bar-Cade when Biff was intown) and ALSO meeting All Star Tommy (and his family) and go to Nicks Comedy Stop. Also, thankful to finding the new digs he and his family calls home.  Joe’s trip to the Back To The Future Museum with our old sketch troop pal Steve … And … he’s NEW Plex account is nothing but joy! Jacques – shouts outs and thanks some of the amazing guest we’ve had this year on the podcast (                  ) as well as the podcast he listens to that he LOVES … (Strike Force, Complains, Open Mic, Gilbert).   As well he chats and gives thanks to some of the awesome people he’s met starting back into Stand-Up comedy (names here).  First time in 15 plus years Beyond Id recorded new songs.  Jax also cheats the very unexpected life turn of being a dad to TWO sports kids who … were NOT sports kids but they found stuff THEY liked and wanted to try and it’s been a fun turn of events that bonded them even more. CP Sideshow 116 - Bill Fay, Co-Founder of Legendary Pictures and for some reason ... friends with Jacques

CP Sideshow 116 - Bill Fay, Co-Founder of Legendary Pictures and for some reason ... friends with Jacques
Legendary Film Maker and … Co-Founder of Legendary Pictures, Bill Fay zooms in to chat with Joe, Biff and Jacques … who for reasons we still don’t understand has been a close friend and mentor to Jacques for 20 years!   The first two film companies Bill worked for out of college went bankrupt … and then he learned to fly a plane to be Hollywood’s man on the ground in Africa ... along the way working with folks like James Cameron for (politely putting it) eccentric film maker Rodger Corman to producing such block busters The Patriot and Independence Day with Director Roland Emmerich.   Along the way ACCIDENTLY doubling his 24-year-old selves lives saving by making a 3-day investment based on getting to see a sneak preview of Back To The Future   Bill (and partner Thomas Toll) created Legendary Pictures in 2000 with a plan for a slate of big budget (largely Superhero / Action) films … Along the way just for giggles … also produced the Hangover (well for giggles and 470m at Box office making it largest grossing rated R comedy in history.)   Bill also talks his favorite project, a small indy sci fi horror called Replicate … well favorite project Jacques was an associate producer on.   Bill did fly to see Jacques she he was living in Qatar in 2026 … and in Qatar gave college lectures and gave road map to finance minister of how too get their country on the film making map.   Bill currently is CEO of Steric Systems – a company that has developed a electronic process of smoothing liquor and spirits at distilleries.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a45uEuVH6jI Steric Systems has grown exponentially over last few years … which leaves very little time for the other new company Bill started with his brother … a Salmon spread they’ve made for friends and family for years … at a few pound batches at a time … now scaling up (pun intended) to 7500 lbs test with a national food chain retailer.    Bill and Jacques now have the stage show rights to the 1999 movie Happy Texas and hope to have a 6 weeks test run (maybe in Seattle) next fall.  To be clear … BILL has the rights, Jacques just loves the movie and wants to work on the play!   CPP on IG: @CarnivalPersonnelPodcast and on Twitter: @Carnival Podcast                                                                                             Biff on Twitter is @BiffPlaysHockey Joe on Twitter is: @Optigrabber Jacques on Twitter is @CarnivalPodcast and FB @JacquesLambert   Opening Song: WKRP parody by @Model_CHP3Y (Twitter and Youtube)   Closing Song: Other Break by Dan Cray and Beyond Id (1993)
