Our Editor's Take

The Movies That Made Me is a podcast about Hollywood insiders' favorite movies. It's an offshoot of Trailers From Hell, which edits movies down to two and a half minutes.

This podcast shows that when it comes to movies, everyone has preferences. The movies they play over and over, or the particular scenes they enjoy. A lot of people have directors whose movies they always see, no matter the storyline. Certain actors engage them. Some people love golden eras of cinema, years when, for them, every movie felt better than the last. It's the same for people who work in Hollywood. But their reasons for loving movies are different. They involve stories about the filming experience or obstacles they overcame while filming.

The Movies That Made Me podcast hosts are Josh Olson and Joe Dante. Josh is a screenwriter best known for the 2005 film A History of Violence. His work has earned him several nominations, including one for an Academy Award. Joe Dante has been directing since the 1970s. He is best known for directing Gremlins in 1984. Joe has also directed other blockbusters like Innerspace, Explorers, and The 'Burbs.

Every week, Josh and Joe meet another Hollywood great to talk about their favorites. These include favorite movies, but also their favorite scenes, or their favorite actors. Some even talk about their favorite year in film. Writer and director Paul Schrader shares his love for the 1970 movie Performance starring Mick Jagger. Director Rodrigo García talks about his favorite portrayals of women. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Versedirector Peter Ramsay loves The Sweet Smell of Success, a 1957 film noir. In a "My Favorite Year" segment, writer and director Edgar Wright talks about 1999. That was the year that third-wave feminism made it to the screen.

The Movies That Made Me brings out a universal truth about cinema. It makes it clear that movies punctuate lives and define eras for individuals. New episodes drop on a periodic basis.
