Our Editor's Take

When NPR's Joe Richman gave tape recorders to teenagers in 1996, he had no idea he had created a phenomenon that would transcend public radio. Radio Diaries is one of NPR's most popular shows today. Besides that, the podcast defined the audio diary genre. On Radio Diaries, listeners hear people narrate their own lives. They share intimate discussions, thoughts, views, and opinions. From the first time the show aired as part of NPR's All Things Considered, it's built a loyal following. Each story is a masterful extract from months of recordings.

Host Richman is a veteran NPR radio reporter and producer. His pioneering efforts with Radio Diaries have earned him several broadcasting awards. Besides working in public radio, Richman teaches radio documentary classes at Columbia and Princeton University.

What started as Teenage Diaries now encompasses people of all ages. The record button is on as one teenager, Amanda Brand, discusses her sexuality with her parents. Listeners hear Amanda as a teenager in 1996 and, in a podcast episode decades later, as a married adult with kids.

The show also presents documentaries using the same non-narrative style. It offers history through the words of people alive as events unfold. Episodes of the Radio Diaries podcast highlight several historical events. These include interviews conducted by historian Studs Terkel. In one episode, some people share about life on Radio Row. Today, Radio Row is what most people will recognize as the tragic site of the Twin Towers in New York City.

The tons of archival audio on the Radio Diaries podcast is a history lover's dream. A new episode is added twice a month to this extensive catalog of stories, told in the most personal way.
