E64 - Antifreeze, Friends, Gas, and Guns

E64 - Antifreeze, Friends, Gas, and Guns
So how do you poison someone with antifreeze and get away with it? Apparently you don’t, as one North Dakota woman found out. Also, how many close friends do you have? It’s probably more than we do, but is that higher or lower than the average American? Also, the gas chamber makes a comeback in Alabama, and how do we deal with guns being made from 3D printers? A couple of states are answering that question by trying to ban the printers. Is that the right solution?  Hosted by Chris and Jeff  1.     Topics0:00:28    Welcome/Intro0:00:37    Disclaimer0:01:06    Sweet Murder0:08:04    Can You Count Your Friends?0:21:43    Another Gas Chamber0:34:00    PYOG (Print Your Own Gun)0:42:15    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesThe Antifreeze MurderThe NPR friends articleNPR article on the Alabama executionArticle on the CA bill banning 3D printers 3.     Merchandise/Support the Showhttps://www.subpartalks.com/support/https://www.subpartalks.com/p/store/ 4.     Contact Us/Follow Us/Rate/Subscribe New episodes every week! Listen, rate, follow, and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! Follow us: Website:  https://www.subpartalks.com - for anything related to the showTwitter:  @subpartalksFacebook:  subpartalks 5.     CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | PixabaySupport the show
E61 - Pedophilia, Prostitution, and Your Face

E61 - Pedophilia, Prostitution, and Your Face
Where do the protections of free speech end? For one professor, it ended when he argued that pedophilia is not morally wrong. The university he works for suspended him, and he has now sued. And speaking of pedophilia (which we both think is morally wrong by the way), how might it be looked at differently 100 years from now? Will it be similar to how society views homosexuality now versus how it was viewed 100 years ago? If science were to determine that pedophilia is not a choice, should future societies stop treating it as a psychiatric disorder, as they did with homosexuality in the 1970s? And finally, we talk prostitution and discuss a very scary facial recognition website.  Hosted by Chris and Jeff 1.     Topics0:00:24    Welcome/Intro0:00:33    Disclaimer0:01:03    Pondering Pedophilia0:37:21    Proliferating Prostitution0:49:00    PIMEYES0:53:23    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesThe New York Times articleExplanation of why the Dallas law was struck downPimeyes 3.     Merchandise/Support the Showhttps://www.subpartalks.com/support/https://www.subpartalks.com/p/store/ 4.     Contact Us/Follow Us/Rate/Subscribe New episodes every week! Listen, rate, follow, and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! Follow us: Website:  https://www.subpartalks.com - for anything related to the showTwitter:  @subpartalksFacebook:  subpartalks 5.     CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | PixabaySupport the show

E59 - Don't Go There
If you’re considering exploring a cave that’s like 4,000 feet underground, please don’t. A lot of bad things can happen. But that didn’t stop Mark Dickey. We talk about his ordeal. Also, are you planning on traveling out of the country? If so, you should probably check the State Department’s travel advisories. And spoiler alert: don’t go to North Korea. Next, Jeff throws some famous movie quotes at Chris to see if he knows which movies they come from. And finally, we have two idiots who just won’t seem to go away—Ken Paxton and Lauren Boebert.  Hosted by Chris and Jeff  1.     Topics0:00:27    Welcome/Intro0:00:36    Disclaimer0:01:06    He Went Where?0:08:34    Stay Away From There0:25:36    We’re Talking Here!0:43:20    The Two Nutjobs0:50:21    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesMark Dickey’s storyState Department travel advisoriesThat scene from Midnight Express (NSFW)The Top 50 Famous Movie QuotesLauren Boebert surveillance video 3.     Merchandise/Support the Showhttps://www.subpartalks.com/support/https://www.subpartalks.com/p/store/ 4.     Contact Us/Follow Us/Rate/Subscribe New episodes every week! Listen, rate, follow, and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! Follow us: Website:  https://www.subpartalks.com - for anything related to the showTwitter:  @subpartalksFacebook:  subpartalks 5.     CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | PixabaySupport the show

E53 - Insanity
We hear a lot about the insanity defense in murder cases, but the reality is that it’s hardly ever used and even when it is, it’s hardly every successful. But what does it mean to be “insane?” This week we look at a current case juxtaposed with the assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan, and learn how the insanity defense changed in this country. Also, what are the most widely read books of all time? Chris had the unenviable task of venturing into a government office, and we end up with some questions.  Hosted by Chris and Jeff 1.     Topics0:00:27    Welcome/Intro0:00:36    Disclaimer0:00:59    Murder or Insanity?0:17:03    Remedial Reading0:31:43    Government Encounters0:39:19    More From The Book of Questions0:51:40    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesThe Taylor Schabusiness storyTen most read books in the world  3. CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | Pixabay Support the show

E51 -Planes, Scams, and Overrated Places
First up, we focus on airplane passengers: one who was unruly and another who fell 10,000 feet and lived. New York and New Jersey are in a spat, Jeff talks Boardwalk Empire, and Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg might fight. Yes, like physically (fingers crossed). And finally, what are some scams that have become normalized, and what are the most overrated places in America? Hosted by Chris and Jeff 1.     Topics0:00:29    Welcome/Intro0:00:39    Disclaimer0:01:06    Plane Difficulties0:10:03    Plane Astonishment0:16:42    Downtown Upcharge Update0:23:03    Boardwalk Empire0:28:08    Fight Of The Century0:34:43    The Greatest Scams0:41:57    America's Most Overrated Places0:56:27    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesWhy are so many passengers unruly?Well this is sad newsAccording to one source, the most overrated places in America 3.     Merchandise/Support the Showhttps://www.subpartalks.com/support/https://www.subpartalks.com/p/store/4.

E49 -Sons of Female Dogs
This week, Chris has some helpful air conditioner info for this God-forsaken, hot summer. Next, we look at two Supreme Court decisions: first, we examine the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s abortion decision from last year; and second, the court also broke with precedent in deciding that race can no longer be used as a factor in college admissions. Is this a good thing or bad thing, and how will colleges respond to the ruling? And finally, it seems that there’s a push from employers to get their workers to return to the office, even though studies show that workers are happier working from home and are just as—if not more—productive out of the office.  Hosted by Chris and Jeff 1.     Topics0:00:28    Welcome/Intro0:00:38    Disclaimer0:01:07    My God, The Heat0:08:10    Abortion Aftermath0:23:22    Affirmative Action No More0:38:31    The Debate Rages On0:54:01    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesThe aftermath of DobbsGeorge Carlin on abortion Opinion pieces on what to do about college admissionsGallup poll results on working from home 3. CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | Pixabay Support the show

E47 -America: Dreams, Ditties, and Dummies
Happy Independence Day! Our forefathers died so you could sit around, eat hot dogs, drink beer, and listen to great content, so do your patriotic duty and turn up the volume as you stuff your face. The American Dream: we’ve all been told about it, but is it a reality or a myth? Chris brings us a top-ten list (Jeff is happy) of patriotic songs, and Jeff has a list of his own, which shows us that the percentage of Americans who don’t believe in basic facts is alarming.  Hosted by Chris and Jeff  1.     Topics0:00:27    Welcome/Intro0:00:36    Disclaimer0:01:08    Independence Day Activities0:02:32    American Dream: Myth or Reality0:13:03    Top 10 Classic Patriotic Songs0:32:53    Top Pop Patriotic Songs0:42:30    Dumb Americans0:54:13    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesThe Newsroom clipGeorge Carlin on the American DreamThe Washington Post March Stars and Stripes ForeverBorn in the U.S.A.: America’s Most Misunderstood Rock AnthemHow Dumb Is America: Ten Things People Actually Believe3.     Merchandise/Support the Showhttps://www.subpartalks.com/support/https://www.subpartalks.com/p/store/ 4.     Contact Us/Follow Us/Rate/Subscribe New episodes every week! Listen, rate, follow, and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! Follow us: Website:  https://www.subpartalks.com - for anything related to the showTwitter:  @subpartalksFacebook:  subpartalks 5.     CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | PixabaySupport the show

E46 - The Ocean: Full of Bears and Millionaires
As usual, we’re coming at you with a lot of topics this week. We discuss the ill-fated submersible in the North Atlantic and discuss another world record. Chris informs us of something else we need to be fearful of. We also touch on an interesting thread Chris found on Reddit: what is a luxury today that once was viewed as common? And finally, the head of the Harvard medical School morgue was, allegedly, selling body parts! Hosted by Chris and Jeff 1.     Topics0:00:31    Welcome/Intro0:00:41    Disclaimer0:01:09    Hell In Texas0:04:46    Submersible SNAFU0:09:35    Downtown Upcharge0:16:08    Rubik's Record0:20:26    Receipt Madness0:23:39    A New Ocean Concern0:29:32    Elusive Luxuries0:45:46    Selling Body Parts0:52:19    Vehicle Inspections0:56:23    Contact/Rate/Subscribe 2.     Additional ResourcesVideo of the Rubik’s Cube world recordThe Rubik’s Cube juggler videoThe black bear in the Gulf of MexicoThe Harvard morgue story 3.     Merchandise/Support the Showhttps://www.subpartalks.com/support/https://www.subpartalks.com/p/store/ 4.     Contact Us/Follow Us/Rate/Subscribe New episodes every week! Listen, rate, follow, and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts! Follow us: Website:  https://www.subpartalks.com - for anything related to the showTwitter:  @subpartalksFacebook:  subpartalks 5.     CreditsSubpar Talks Theme Music: Get Airy! by Sergei Chetvertnykh: SergeQuadrado | PixabaySubpar Talks transition music: Jingle Clean Guitar Funky and Rock Style by Shiden Beats Music: ShidenBeatsMusic | PixabaySupport the show
