Our Editor's Take

The ADHD Experts Podcast is a recorded series of presentations about ADHD. Doctors and specialists speak and answer questions from the audience. It's a resource for people affected by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. The comprehensive series dispels misinformation, misdiagnoses, and stigmas.

ADHD Experts Podcast informs and encourages listeners. Several speakers mention diagnostic and treatment advances. Some of the experts have ADHD. One of them, Dr. Ned Hallowell, thinks ADHD is a trait more than a disorder. He believes the term "deficit" is inaccurate since it implies dementia. People with ADHD have attention that wanders, not a lack of attention.

Dr. Hallowell says untreated ADHD can cause terrible outcomes. These include school failure, unemployment, drug abuse, imprisonment, and suicide. But with proper treatment, people with ADHD can achieve at high levels. Pulitzer and Nobel Prize winners and Grammy, Tony, and Academy Award winners have ADHD. The ADHD Experts Podcast helps people use distinctive traits to their advantage. In Dr. Hallowell's experience, people with ADHD are generous, kind, forgiving, and enthusiastic.

The physician says three negative symptoms of ADHD are distractibility, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. With treatment, those can become curiosity, creativity, and energy. He jokes that, at age 62, he appreciates the energy symptom. Dr. Hallowell compares ADHD to driving a Ferrari with bicycle brakes. Once people strengthen their brakes, they excel. Diagnosis is essential. He estimates that 90 percent of adults aren't diagnosed.

Dr. Russell Barkley's episode should help correct that. He says inattentiveness and hyperactivity are the observable features. But ADHD is more complex. It can arise from pregnancy or birth complications, or from toxins, diseases, or trauma. But 75 percent of cases have genetic origins. The doctor tells parents they can't punish their child out of the disorder. They should offer compassion and accommodations. He shares a five-part intervention strategy and explains his 30 percent rule.

ADHD Experts Podcast shares ideas to manage the complicated disorder. It discusses related issues like dyslexia and Tourette's syndrome. It also addresses bullying and mental health. The podcast doesn't replace medical advice. But it can help optimize life with ADHD.
