A Discussion of Child Sexual Abuse of Boys and It’s Aftermath in “Monday, Rent Boy” with Susan Doherty
[Content Warning] : Child Sexual Abuse, Child Exploitation, Religious Abuse Today, Jan is joined by Susan Doherty, to discuss the release of her new book “Monday Rent Boy.” She began her working life at Maclean’s Magazine in Toronto. After Maclean’s, she worked for a digital publishing company in Paris, and free-lanced for The International Herald Tribune, La Tribune de Genève, and The Independent in London. Back in Canada, she studied creative writing at the University of Toronto, Metropolitan University and Concordia University. Her award-winning debut novel, A Secret Music was published in 2015. Her second book, The Ghost Garden, the story of an Ottawa woman’s life-long struggle with schizophrenia won the Quebec Writers’ Federation Mavis Gallant Prize for Non-fiction prize in 2019. Her new novel, Monday Rent Boy debuted on March 20, 2024 and deals with issues of child exploitation. All of her writing centers around the issue of traumatized children navigating to adulthood free from addiction and living healthy, happy lives. [Content Warning]: Child sexual abuse, Intrafamilial Sexual AbuseToday, we are thrilled to have Lynn Meyer back on our show to discuss her workbook 'No More Excuses: Let’s Heal For Real' and her journey of healing from childhood sexual abuse. Jan has been using Lynn’s workbook as a tool for healing in her Thrivivor community and has found it immensely beneficial. In this conversation, Jan and Lynn discuss various chapters in the workbook, including ‘Silent No More’ and ‘Pain to Power’. They explore moving forward and healing without an apology, emphasizing the importance of reminding survivors that it’s not their fault. Lynn also shares insights into the healing retreats she offers, which integrate various modalities such as nutrition, yoga, and massage.Lynn is an Emotional Healing Coach, Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Licensed Professional Counselor.  She’s been in the mental health field for 22 years helping families restore their relationships. After working for hospitals and other agencies, Lynn decided to go into private practice where she worked with adults. Before the pandemic Lynn wanted to serve women that had experienced trauma. She began working with women who had endured sexual abuse and domestic violence. Lynn has been coaching women of color for 5 years now, helping them to embrace their femininity, gain confidence, reinvigorate their relationships while rediscovering intimacy. Lynn is also a mother of 5 and wife whose purpose is to support women in and on their emotional healing so they can live the life they truly desire. Her teachings are simple but effective – she helps the women she serves, heal, and overcome trauma, feel safe and sexy in body and emotion. [Content Warning]: Child Sexual AbuseKatiuska (Kati) Chavez is a young lady with a huge heart for survivors of child sexual abuse. She reached out to us after listening to our podcast and watching “A Friend of the Family,” and we immediately made a connection. Kati is a lifestyle blogger, who is also a survivor of child sexual abuse.  She supports survivors on her social media pages, where she educates for prevention. Kati was recently awarded a scholarship to learn how to become an orator/motivational speaker and her ultimate goal is to start a foundation called , Mi Propio Diamante (My Own Diamond), which aims to empower survivors and promote healing. She shares her personal journey of healing and how her parents' support and her spirituality was imperative in her process. Kati talks about her volunteer work with Victim Services, and the need to support children as well as adults who are striving to heal from all types of abuse.  In this conversation, Kati and Jan discuss the vital need to educate children about safe touch and consent and why these conversations need to start early in order to be effective.  Kati is an inspiration to other young survivors. A Holistic Mentor's Journey : Sharing Her Pathway to Mind-Body Harmony With Edit B. Kiss
Jan is joined by Edit B Kiss a holistic mentor, success habit coach, #1 best selling author, Humanitarian Award winner and international speaker. She works with clients on releasing long-lasting pains, blockages, ancestor defects and emotional traumas so they could live fulfilled and joyful lives. Edit originally was a petroleum engineer, working in the petroleum industry for 15 years before being a life-coach full time. During those years she trained to become a Reiki Master, a Sekhem Healer and a Karma Yogi Practitioner under the teaching of Karma Guru Sumant Kaul; strengthened her extra senses; and worked on several family constellation therapies. She learned life-coaching from the Satori Prime brothers (who base their work on Landmark approaches) and was trained by Bob Proctor, who is known for his appearance as a featured expert in the movie, The Secret. Edit came to this work after years of suffering silently with panic attacks and realized that she needed a new approach to healing.  She began her journey when she visited a Reiki Master and discovered that this was her path in life and trained to become a full time Holistic Mentor. Mental Health, Purity Culture, and Enthusiastic Consent With Cheryl Hall
[Content Warning]: Suicide Attempts, Interpersonal Violence, Rape, Institutional Abuse, Threats of Violence, Exploitation of a Minor, Attempted Trafficking.In our last two episodes with Cheryl Hall, Cheryl tells us her daughter’s harrowing story of abuse, rape, attempted trafficking, and suicide attempts. Jan and Cheryl spoke about how social media impacts teens and the challenges of monitoring their online behavior as well as what airports are doing to prevent human trafficking. In this episode, Jan and Cheryl focus on issues that were not previously discussed;  including the lack of sufficient and suitable mental health facilities for teens, what enthusiastic consent is and how we can teach it to our children, and the negative impact of purity culture, particularly on children who are neurodivergent. They emphasize the importance of creating safe communication channels between you and your child and your child and authority figures. Jan and Cheryl discuss purity culture, the patriarchy, and vertical morality, and their consequences on individuals' mental health and self-perception. They explore the importance of horizontal morality and personal autonomy, as well as the abuse of power in religious institutions. The concept of enthusiastic consent is stressed as a crucial aspect of healthy relationships. The conversation also emphasizes the need for accessible and trauma-informed mental health care, as well as addressing bullying and abuse in educational settings. The overall theme is protecting survivors and advocating for their well-being. Today, Jan is joined by Kerry Jenkins, a Certified Physician Assistant (PA-C) in Florida who graduated from Nova Southeastern University in 2000 and received her Masters in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Nebraska in 2007. Kerry discovered Functional/Integrative medicine when a family member began having chronic digestive concerns. She quickly realized that this was the type of medicine that she would be excited to practice! Kerry was certified through the Institute of Functional Medicine.  Kerry believes every patient has a story and through story sharing we gather details to map out the history and implement a plan for true healing. Her practice, Whisper Health, was created to offer patients a more holistic approach to healing/managing their chronic conditions In today’s conversation, Jan and Kerry talk about the link between trauma and health. They discuss the importance of having a clinician who actively listens and validates patients at the initial step in the healing process. Kerry explains the impact of trauma on the mind, body, and spirit and shares insights into how she creates a healing plan with patients. The conversation stresses the significance of creating a holistic healing approach; advocating for the inclusion of other clinicians in the healing plan. Word of the Month : Fearlessness
We are starting a new series called “Word of the Month.” In this series Jan will pick one word for each month to focus on as a way to grow and challenge herself and her listeners. This month Jan is focusing on fearlessness. In this episode she openly discusses her own fear that stemmed from the brainwashing and sexual abuse she experienced as a tween/teen.  She emphasizes that fearlessness does not mean eliminating all fear from our lives, but rather shifting our relationship with fear and learning to navigate it more effectively. Jan shares personal experiences and challenges listeners to practice fearlessness in various aspects of their lives, such as sharing their stories, standing up for themselves, and speaking out against injustice. She encourages listeners to cultivate courage, hope, and authenticity, and to choose hope over fear. Places Nowhere : Thriving After Intrafamilial Sexual Abuse With Lee Cooper
[Content Warning]: This episode contains graphic descriptions of intrafamilial abuse including: Domestic Violence, Substance Abuse, Physical abuse, Molestation and Attempted Rape of a Child. There is also a brief mention of suicidal ideation.  Today, Jan is joined by Lee Cooper, who courageously discusses the sexual violence he experienced at the hands of his father, not revealing his secret until 20 years later during the Covid Pandemic.  Through his healing, Lee has created a photography collective called “Places Nowhere”, which expresses the dissociation one experiences during and after being sexually assaulted. Lee and Jan converse about Lee’s passion for photography and how it became a form of escape and mindfulness during his healing process. Lee speaks openly about the bullying and sexual abuse he endured , the abusive relationship with his father, and the traumatic incidents he both witnessed and experienced.. He highlights the importance of safe spaces and the vital role his grandmother played by offering her love and support. Lee discloses his abuse to his ex-girlfriend and reflects on the impact of reading 'The Body Keeps the Score' by Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk which became a catalyst for his healing.  He shares the challenges he faced during the pandemic and the strain it put on his relationships. Lee also talks about reporting his father to the police and the personal consequences that followed. He reflects on the deep grief and pain he experienced and the impact it had on his relationship with his mother. Lee explores the process of reframing his relationship with his family and the desire for a better connection with his mother. . Lee shares his journey of self-awareness and the role of mindfulness in recognizing triggers and maintaining healthy habits. In closing they emphasize the need for peer-to-peer support and the power of sharing stories to raise awareness and support survivors. Observing Your Thoughts and Living In The Moment With Nikki Valencia

Nikki’s life and healing started when she found herself in the 12-steprooms, which was her first surrender. Her second deepest surrender is when her wife died which led to the development of the Joan of Heart.  Joan of Heart is a pay-it-forward mentorship program developed with Infinite Love along with the teachings of Eckhardt Tolle.  Presently Nikki is leading a course entitled, 90 Days to The Heart of The Matter.  It is a daily, present, conscious way of life that takes you towards observation, intention and freedom in 90 days and beyond. Over the course of their discussion, Jan and Nikki talk about the power of being present and observing your thoughts, how to give yourself and others grace, and how to be less reactive and more present in the moment. Nikki shares her multiple experiences of childhood trauma and how she found healing through the 12-step programs and the teachings of Eckhart Tolle. Today, Jan is joined by Elizabeth Rose, who shares her story of neglect and childhood sexual abuse that began early on in her life. She talks about the normalization of abuse in her home and the grooming and manipulation she experienced. Being trafficked as a teenager, abandoned by her mother, and living in multiple foster care homes as an adolescent, Elizabeth Rose has a unique perspective on the systemic injustices that are faced by children who are neglected, abused and exploited. In this conversation, Jan and Elizabeth Rose discuss the importance of education, advocacy, trauma-informed care, and support for survivors of human trafficking. [Content Warning]: Sexual abuse and mature languageToday, Jan is joined by Alison Arngrim, known for her role as Nellie Olson on Little House on the Prairie.  She discusses her experiences with abuse and her involvement in The National Association to Protect Children, or PROTECT.org, where she currently serves as California Chair, National Spokesperson and Founding Board Member.  Jan and Alison discuss the impact of child abuse on development, the global crisis of child abuse, future plans and advocacy, upcoming events, such as the 50th anniversary of Little House on the Prairie, and the importance of hope, resilience, laughter, and courage.Alison Arngrim is best known for her role as the nasty Nellie Oleson on "Little House on the Prairie” and continues to amuse audiences through film, tv, stage and multimedia performances. Her one woman show "Confessions of a Prairie Bitch" has become a worldwide phenomenon. As a stand-up comedian, she has headlined at major comedy clubs and currently stars in two comedy series pilots including “Life Interrupted” and “C.P.R. She frequently mocks her "ex-child star" image on talk shows and won TV Land's "Character Most Desperately In Need of a Time Out" award in 2006. After co-star Steve Tracy died of AIDS complications in 1986, Arngrim began volunteering for AIDS Project LA.  She later managed a nonprofit assisting families affected by HIV/AIDS. Currently a spokesperson for PROTECT, Arngrim advocates for stronger child protection laws and has shared her own story of childhood sexual abuse. Arngrim resides in Tujunga with her husband of 20+ years.
