Politics is how people achieve power. Policy is what they do with it. Every week on The Weeds, host Jonquilyn Hill and guests break down the policies that shape our lives, from abortion to financial regulations to affirmative action to housing. We dive deep and we get wonky, but we have fun along the way. New episodes drop every Wednesday. Produced by Vox and the Vox Media Podcast Network. read less

Our Editor's Take

Vox's The Weeds podcast has one simple goal. It seeks to bring up the parts of American politics that matter the most but may not get emphasized. The show wants to discuss issues that might seem boring to some people. Yet these subjects have affected their lives. Without being too complicated or condescending, the podcast wants to empower the listeners.

The title of The Weeds podcast indicates the theme. Listeners may be in “the weeds,” as the expression goes. They may not understand a particular topic. This show may help them increase their understanding and get them, well, out of the weeds. For example, during tax season, the show explains why the American tax code can be so frustrating. They also give tips on how to make it a little easier, and discuss ways the US could fix the system.

Jonquilyn Hill is the current host of The Weeds podcast. Matthew Ygelesias, cofounder of Vox, also cofounded this podcast in 2015. The political writer once cohosted the show with fellow writers Ezra Klein and Sarah Kliff. While the hosting voices have changed over the years, the mission remains the same. Once a week, for around 50 minutes, Hill examines a politics-related topic. Academics, historians, and policymakers appear on the show to explain the issue. She brings her broadcasting expertise working in NPR and NBC into the podcast. Hill also uses her experience and research to educate the listeners. Most of all, she helps them make more informed decisions about the world they live in.

The Weeds may use a current topic, such as school shootings, as a springboard for a more detailed look at whether assault weapons bans work. Other topics include cash bail, reparations, and the rail industry. After each episode, the listener may better understand the topic. The podcast has a new enlightening episode each week.
