Our Editor's Take

The On Theme podcast celebrates past, present, and future Black stories. Hosts Katie and Yves want to add to the archive as they answer the question of what black storytelling is. These longtime friends are passionate about Black stories told through all media, from books and songs to movies and plays.

The hosts celebrate Black stories in every podcast episode. They see no need to wait for a particular time of year or for a tragedy to highlight Black experiences. Listeners can expect stories from the meaningful to the mundane. What's the history of Blackface? Why are Black people always shown to be running from danger in horror films? One On Theme episode explores artworks that their creators now regret. For Black artists, a layer of expectation can influence these creations. Elements such as stereotyping and lack of opportunities play a part.

The podcast hosts discuss the Black entertainer Ernest Hogan. He was an acclaimed performer and one of the highest Black earners in the industry. Ernest was also responsible for creating songs known as “Coon songs.” These popular tunes featured disparaging caricatures and misconceptions of Black people. Yves reveals how Ernest wrote the music to make money for himself and other Black musicians. Toward the end of his life, Ernest debated whether it was still the right choice. It's a fascinating exploration of accountability and perspectives changing over time.

Another podcast episode provides “A Love Letter to Black Stories.” Katie and Yves reveal their gratitude for stories that have influenced their lives. They share eloquent letters to Black stories and how they have welcomed them in every shape. They then discuss their different interpretations of Black stories and how they are now part of a Black story.

The On Theme podcast explores fascinating Black stories from across history. Katie and Yves invite guests to discuss an array of topics. Subjects include Black magicians and the media's representation of drugs. Each episode is insightful and thought-provoking.
