Hawkeye Report Podcast 601
It's a jam packed Hawkeye Report podcast to start the week as we wrap up spring football and talk a whole lot about the transfer portal for the Iowa women's basketball team, men's squad, and some football portal talk is picking up.  First we start with the biggest news this past week the additon of Lucy Olsen to the Iowa women's basketball team. Iowa needed a point guard and scoring and they got that in Olsen. Kyle Huesmann and Tom Kakert dive into what it means for the Hawkeyes, why she picked Iowa, and the impact it has on the team next season. Does this making Iowa a Top 25 team next season even without Caitlin Clark? Then we dive into Iowa men's basketball and their addition of Drew Thelwell. They needed a veteran point guard and found it. How did the success of Caitlin Clark help with Iowa recruiting Thelwell? What will he bring to the table next season and will he split time with Brock Harding? Fran McCaffery isn't done in the portal. We look at potential big men targets in the portal.  We move on to football and the portal. Jacob Bostick left suddenly, which was a surprise to the Iowa coaches. But, they have a potential wide receiver target visiting Tuesday. We look at that player as a prospect. We also discuss if Iowa will be in the market for a quarterback this spring and why they probably need to. Are there other positions they need to look at in the portal and how are they going to get down to 85 scholarship players by August? We finally talk some football and what we saw at the spring game on Saturday. What did we think of Tim Lester's offense? Who were some of the standout players at the practice? How are we feeling about Iowa heading into the summer months? Finally we wrap up talking Iowa baseball. The Hawkeyes swept Rutgers to move to 9-6 in conference play. Have they turned the corner from a pitching perspective? What do we make of the strong start on Sunday from Brody Brecht?

It's a jam packed Sweet 16 edition of the Hawkeye Report Podcast. Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann open the pod with an extended conversation about the Iowa women's basketball team advancing to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament after holding off West Virginia on Monday night.  We look back at the game and the key plays down the stretch. In particular we discuss the block by Gabbie Marshall and the drive, score, and foul from Syd Affolter. We also talk about the performance of Caitlin Clark in the win and how Iowa fans didn't want to leave Carver-Hawkeye Arena and the players soaked in one final victory at home this season.  Iowa will be headed to Albany for the Sweet 16. We discuss the match-up with Colorado for the second straight year in this round of the NCAA Tournament. We look back at last year's game and what they have on their roster this season. We also look at the other side of the bracket with LSU and UCLA looming.  Then we move on to men's basketball. We go back to Sunday and discuss the loss to Utah on Sunday night in a game that Iowa never felt they had a shot to win. We look ahead to next season, which will not include Tony Perkins, who hit the portal today, and Patrick McCaffery, who has all but said he is headed elsewhere next season. What will the lineup look like? What are Iowa's needs in the transfer portal? Also, spring football is undwerway and we met with Kirk Ferentz for the first time this spring to discuss the new offense, the two deeps, the situation at quarterback and the Iowa head coach also reacts for the first time to the departure of Kadyn Proctor after two months on the Iowa campus. Finally we dicuss some Iowa baseball news and preview the upcoming series this weekend against Minnesota.

Plenty of news this week in the world of the Hawkeyes and we have Iowa football in the news. Tom Kakert and Matt Randazzo open the podcast discussing the biggest news of the week, the sudden departure of Kadyn Proctor from the Hawkeye program after two months following a transfer from Alabama?  What happened with Proctor? Why is he leaving? Why you can't point fingers at the Iowa Swarm and how he didn't get any money from the Iowa Swarm general fund given by fans/supports. We then dive into the impact of this decision on the Iowa offensive line. What will the starting lineup look like now that Proctor is no longer penciled in at left tackle? Is there a player or two to watch on the offensive line? We also dive into spring football talk as practice got underway this week in Iowa City. What are the big storylines that fans need to watch this spring? What are we hearing about Tim Lester as Iowa's OC? What should happen at quarterback? Will we see veterans on defense sitting out this spring?  Then we talk Iowa hoops. The Hawkeyes beat Kansas State on Tuesday night. What is the NBA potential of Payton Sandfort? Did he raise his stock on Tuesday with his shooting performance? We then take an early look at the game this weekend against Utah. Finally we wrap up men's hoops with news that Dasonte Bowen is transferring and what that means for the future of the roster? Who starts next year? What are Iowa's portal needs. We also talk women's hoops and covering the Iowa City regional this weekend.

It was a busy weekend for Iowa Basketball and Tom Kakert and Kyle Huesmann have you covered from both the Hawkeye men and women are concerned. We open the pod with a long discussion of our day at Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Sunday watching Caitlin Clark and Iowa knock off Ohio State. We talk about Clark setting the all-time scoring mark for a player in NCAA D1 competition and what it means.  We also dive into the game and the unfortunate injury to starting guard Molly Davis. If she is out, how will Iowa fill that void? Who can step in and who needs to step up? Then we look at Iowa's road in the Big Ten Tournament, which will get underway for the Hawkeyes on Friday late afternoon. Then we move over to the Iowa men, who picked up a huge road win on Saturday afternoon at Northwestern. We look at how the Hawkeyes were able to hold off the Wildcats down the stretch and the strong development of Josh Dix as a scorer in the last couple of weeks and how that has helped Iowa in their recent run. We also talk about the three key possessions down the stretch for Iowa in the victory. Finally we wrap up looking at what it will take for the Hawkeyes to get off the bubble and firmly into the NCAA Tournament once again this year.  Finally we finish up talking about the struggling Iowa baseball team. They dropped two of three at Ole Miss this weekend once again it was the bullpen that was the cause of their struggles. Can this be fixed in the short term and what do we think about the hitting so far this season? We also look at the upcoming schedule for Iowa, starting with a home game on Tuesday.
