Our Editor's Take

The host of the podcast Queersplaining has a talent for communicating with folks and helping them understand things. To be more specific, Callie Wright has the capacity to create a dialogue with people who want to learn. As a nonbinary, trans person, it's not their role to represent the entire community. But they understand that there's a void in knowledge about queer and trans people. That gap allows for misinformation and disinformation to spread. Since a lot of people know little to nothing about the LGBTQIA+ experience, it's easy to convince them of lies. So Wright feels like a soldier on this mission to correct perceptions. The podcast is another tool they use in the fight.

In each episode of the podcast, Wright interviews a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. In short installments, the guests share their hardships, challenges, hopes, and dreams. They talk about the day-to-day bias they come across and how it affects their mental health. But they also share how their lives are better since coming out and how people close to them support them.

Wright makes a conscious choice to invite people from all possible backgrounds. Their one unifying quality is being a member of the LGBTQIA+ community. But other than that, they hold different political views and come from various financial or ethnic origins. For instance, one guest is a Black leftist who owns a gun. Another is a Muay Thai fighter and coach. With this diversity, Wright hopes to appeal to every listener of Queersplaining.

The host learned a long time ago that giving people statistics and facts makes no difference. The only way to get through to them is to share stories that humanize gay and trans experiences. So Wright does that alongside his guests in every episode of Queersplaining. Together, they hope to educate and connect with as many people as possible.
