Ghost Story

Wondery | Pineapple Street Studios

Host Tristan Redman is a seasoned journalist who doesn’t believe in ghosts. But weird things happened in the bedroom he lived in as a teenager. When he discovers years later that subsequent occupants of the same house have been visited by the ghost of a faceless woman, he’s curious. Because it just so happens that Tristan’s childhood home is right next door to the house where his wife’s great grandmother, Naomi Dancy, was murdered in 1937 – killed by two gunshots to the face. Could there be a connection between the ghost and the murder? Tristan decides to investigate and soon finds himself going where no son-in-law should go, deep into his wife’s family history, asking questions no one wants answered.‘

Our Editor's Take

Ghost Story is not a typical paranormal podcast. There are descriptions of flashing lights, moving objects, and unexplained events. However, they are not there to spook the listeners. Instead, they reveal a more complex tale of family history, true crime, and how it all relates to a skeptical journalist who grew up in a haunted house.

Tristan Redman has been a correspondent for Al Jazeera English for the past fifteen years. During that time, he reported on terror attacks, conflicts in Africa, and the war in Ukraine. The violence he saw in real life might be more horrific than any classic ghost story he's ever read. Also, the podcast host decided long ago that he doesn't believe in the supernatural. He would roll his eyes at any paranormal story and search for a logical explanation. But he couldn't find one when it came to his childhood home.

Tristan discovered strange events happening there. It was one thing when he experienced objects that moved to the other side of the room as a teen. It didn't seem that spooky and could have been an ongoing prank. When he found out that two other unconnected families saw a ghost in the same house, he became intrigued. What made this stereotypical horror story worth investigating was the family connection. Tristan's wife had an ancestor who died in the house next door. Was her ghost visiting the haunted place? The podcast host wouldn't have to travel far to collect evidence and testimonials. They were right there, inside his family tree.

The Ghost Story podcast starts as a paranormal tale. Soon, it becomes more like an exploration of family drama. Tristan unravels past family secrets that might unsettle his entire household. He does so in such a compelling manner that it's difficult to stop listening.
