How are strong support systems vital for mental health management? In this week's bonus episode, Sarah is joined by two very special guests, Melissa Duncan and Jihan Gabart who are the founders of SoMyPolar Inc. SoMypolar INC consists of Melissa Duncan and Jihan Gabart. We are a nonprofit organization that services the mental health community. Melissa is diagnosed with more than one mental health illness and chooses to live a life more significant than what society portrays as possible. Her diagnosis was given over ten years ago, consisting of bipolar, OCD, and schizoaffective disorder. Jihan is currently her caregiver, a role that she was thrown into after witnessing the struggles of her childhood friend. A role unfamiliar for both embarked them on a journey. It catapulted them into a movement to fight stigmas and shed light on the life of the two, showing a great example of when people love others with mental illness and what it can do!  Join these ladies as they discuss the power of supporting loved ones who are managing mental health conditions, how friendship plays a crucial role in psychological recovery, the role of caregivers in the healing process, and how mental health stigmas can be dismantled through raising awareness of these issues in various communities. Embracing Mental Wellness in the Black Community (feat. Dr. Nicole Washington)
How can we encourage more mental health treatment in the Black community? In honor of Black History Month, this week's bonus episode features an enlightening conversation between Sarah and esteemed guest, Dr. Nicole Washington. Dr. Nicole Washington is a native of Baton Rouge, Louisiana where she attended Southern University and A&M College. After receiving her BS degree, she moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma to matriculate at the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed residency in Psychiatry at the University of Oklahoma in Tulsa and a masters degree in Public Health through the University of Illinois at Chicago. Since completion of her residency training, Dr. Washington has spent most of her career caring for and being an advocate for those who are not typically consumers of mental health services, namely underserved communities, those with severe mental illness and high performing professionals. With a passion for educating others about mental illness, she speaks on a variety of topics to colleagues and the general public. Through her private practice, podcast, speaking and writing, she seeks to provide education in efforts to decrease the stigma associated with psychiatric illness.  Join these ladies as they talk about how Dr. Nicole developed her career as a mental health professional, her journey with her mental health and how that might’ve influenced her decision to become a mental health professional, what her views are on the “Strong Black Man or Woman” facade and how people in the Black community can become more comfortable in seeking mental health services. Dr. Karen is a Licensed Clinical Pastoral Counselor, ordained minister, best-selling author, and international speaker. She's made it her mission to demonstrate how to live a life of joy by following the Biblical instructions to take every thought captive and retrain them to agree with every good thing God says about you, and has for you. She's a preacher's kid who was lost in new-age occult practices while searching for a meaningful and powerful relationship with God. It was only after a devastating abortion that she opened her heart to the only One who could love her the way she'd been longing for. God led her to complete her PhD in Christian counseling and then to discover everything she knew about scientific brain retraining was coded in His Word.  Join these ladies as they discuss the importance of the brain retraining process, how the Bible factors into improving negative thought patterns, Dr. Karen's experience with transforming her mental health through her faith, and the various dimensions of self-care. Ally is a Canadian poet, musician, and BPD (borderline personality disorder) advocate who has called Winnipeg, Manitoba home since birth. Through raw and real poetic storytelling, she has a vision to embolden the healing journeys of people with Borderline everywhere by sharing her lived experience. To Ally, nothing holds more power than the solidarity of like-minded souls with one mutual goal: overcoming hardship via self-compassion. In addition to her debut poetry collection A Generation Of Sunflowers and second book Bloom, Ally has been published in Dipity Literary Magazine's first edition (Human Typewriters from Around The World). She has sold copies of her work internationally and can be found in local bookstores in Winnipeg. When Ally isn't writing you can find her building Lego, spending time with her cat or avidly researching various topics. She intends to break stigma surrounding Borderline Personality Disorder one copy of A Generation Of Sunflowers and Bloom at a time.
