FIVE FROM SEVENS AND TWELVES

Dave and Mark

Our hosts, Dave and Mark, are two music obsessives who first met in 2008 at the community radio station RTRFM 92.1 in Perth, Western Australia. Bonding over a love of post punk and other alternative music genres, they soon began making music together and are still heavily involved in the city's fertile local music scene. They also like nothing more than a yarn about music, and their favourite (or not so favourite) bands. These conversations are often amusing, sometimes serious and occasionally, potentially libellous. Thus, the idea for this podcast was born. Each episode the lads choose a theme and each select five songs to explore the topic. The show is free flowing and so the facts are sometimes hazy and the chat can go in any direction. This is not your typical music show.

Songs about Shoes and Boots

Songs about Shoes and Boots
Lets face it, most of us can't get away with walking very far barefoot. The first shoes emerged in the ice age in 40000bc and were made of bark. By 2023, the footwear industry is estimated to be worth around USD 403.18 billion. It's hard to avoid footwear when it comes to songs. Red shoes are a particularly popular topic for example, as are celebrations of sneaker brands. We're talking Shoes and Boots on today's episode.             Check out the playlist for the episode here: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2vWuIrsvPF6AfyxnUrJBpR?si=d94e8d2096de4e48Track 1: Shared track: RUN DMC, "My Adidas", Live on Soul Soulhttps://youtu.be/16eA6uJ9hsA?si=NhkwvrWFdxa-4Se_    Track 2:  Dave, NOFX, "Jeff wears Birkenstocks", https://youtu.be/vJ63Bcf7y6U?si=LqXtgZAYvxfpm1syTrack 3:  Mark ,''These old shoes'',  Fats Domino, Audio   https://youtu.be/rhJLfdCWrMI?si=78yBK1bD__3_pJY9Track 4:  Dave, NOFX, "Jeff wears Birkenstocks",https://youtu.be/Mctmz0_GQ5o?si=bsYeEox0za-BJ2oWTrack 5: Mark, The Durutti Column, "The day is over", and Red shoes", live BBC2, 1988https://youtu.be/mGwjEjRk1Es?si=loQGGkTzrOh7PV0UExtra's: Short documentary, "How Football and Grime Music Inspired the UK's Sneaker Culture", - Sole Originshttps://youtu.be/wrkXw6ZHg-8?si=ZpaSn9ygIj5NSNdDShort documentary, "How the Berlin Wall Gave Birth to Germany's Sneaker Culture - Sole Originshttps://youtu.be/P2-CLzD7_AA?si=t2k-TMi-UmS867PQJeff Rosenstock, rates everyday things using the Pitchfork scale (Video)https://youtu.be/7Rkmsk0KkAY?si=zKQp0FTD5ZUqpn4zJeff Abarta, Immortalized in a Song by the Punk Band NOFX- Video https://youtu.be/Nw7zI5B0Ago?si=S2QCBnmOxk2tzhBdNancy Sinatra and Lee Hazelwood, "These boots are made for walking", Official video https://youtu.be/GM1kzbAgo_E?si=PoxJySTyeyctVhgcStormzy, "Big For Your Boots", official video  https://youtu.be/dFOErVWlsxg?si=MlRg_jJ1VjR3KFERPaul Simon, "Diamonds on the soles of her shoes" Live, 1987 https://youtu.be/Fmf9ZJ_Yn0A?si=iEzfanQfyqdMgyY8Sly Withers, "Nike Shoe", Videohttps://youtu.be/KRhB2ShRpFw?si=tmWDmXzXPxa7CjhZTheme tune and all music heard on the show performed by: David Lee OwenContact the team: fivefrom7sand12s@gmail.comfollow us:Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089236598175Thanks heaps for listening to the show

Violence in music

Violence in music
On todays episode we turn our attention to the theme of violence in music. Touching on such tales as the singer who couldn't stop stabbing people. To the artist known as "Killer", who once shot his bass player, and another time his own home with a machine gun to wake up his friends to carry on the party.     We are more peaceful characters at the pod, this is more our vibe,  “Violence is not the answer, it is the question, and the answer is no.” – Norman MailerMake sure you check the Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1VWmJhVTmeOpQ6J2psJDTD?si=3dc13a37b7734acb Track 1 - Mark: Jerry Lee Lewis, "Live at the Star club, Hamburg", Audiohttps://youtu.be/2B8uJ0G0HZg?si=aMT6_daHXTZrKTQSSJerry Lee Lewis, "Tales from the tour bus", Wired to the max -Animationhttps://youtu.be/eG8WwbYT2Ys?si=eAS2dcr15z5R99se Track 2 - Dave: Tyler, the creator, "bsd", Audiohttps://youtu.be/PAzzFmxcveA?si=ygwhw_XMG-Sw2WXyTrack 3 - Special guest and pod contributor Angie Boyce- Nobuo Uematsu,"Decisive battle", Final Fantasy VI, Original soundtrackhttps://open.spotify.com/track/459meHLoi2qIoAAamGCc0x?si=3e975e97682c446dTrack 4 - Dave: The Prodigy, "Smack my bitch up", Video, Live at Rock Am Ring, 2009https://youtu.be/9z4Kmje1V2U?si=mW4A3E1Z54DnA-bjTrack 5 - Mark: Lead Belly, "Where did you sleep last night ", Audio, Remastered Audio 2021https://youtu.be/tBdUw7QJD8Q?si=Ciwb2KS7UrePTSpqExtras: Primal Scream, "Kill all hippies", Official videohttps://youtu.be/E86gWQs-ios?si=WxZt5Qx_obdBSSJ8The Jam, "Down in the tube station at midnight", Live on TVhttps://youtu.be/hf4EFDGP4yg?si=Wn6zzoB3suHGAmLK Run the jewels, "'Kill Your Masters", Audio https://youtu.be/dLfyZE77Tq4?si=cthywjsZq47zwHbWThe Fauves, "Don't get death threats anymore", Official video https://youtu.be/YyoT5P5bWjY?si=rQqyouGn8mMhYDalJohn Otway & Wild Willy Barrett - Headbutts 1981 TV appearancehttps://youtu.be/dH-CXwphIDM?si=Dz6Sq2v9OW9BPe7BDMX, "Bring Your Whole Crew - Video -Sesame Street Version https://youtu.be/BTZ4qtrFycQ?si=DOpmPa5-oLF68mY6Bob Vylan, "Pretty Little Song", Video https://youtu.be/urV4yjHUBIw?si=QXt_msjotHVbFxjzTheme tune and all music heard on the show performed by: David Lee OwenContact the team: fivefrom7sand12s@gmail.comfollow us:Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089236598175Thanks heaps for listening to the show

Dave takes the lead on this episode, as we turn our attention to that time in everyone's lives when for better or worse, we all had to attend that institution known as school. It's our 12th episode and this brings us to the close of season one. We finish up with part two of a musical love letter to our home town of Perth, Western Australia. We finish up our last four tracks but also discuss a bunch of other bands that we love and think you might too.  We've also got a ripper playlist for this one. It is probably our favourite of the season and we definitely recommend  giving it a spin! Cheers for listening to the first season of our podcast, we sincerely appreciate your support.  We love doing it, it's a hobby, a lot of fun and a good chance for friends to catch up and enjoy the act of creating something. We live in a world of DIY, so go DIY!  If you have a theme you would like us to cover in season two, let us know!https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089236598175Big love.Mark and Dave       Link to episodes playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/1aQuBvq58WzNkb7Ic2aiq6Links to tracks discussed in the episode:Dave 4: The Bank Holidays "Consolation Prize" audiohttps://open.spotify.com/track/0dOOEnkKU1WD4vH07J6jya?si=3FjD1eZTT_61pNi9u0Kprw&app_destination=copy-linkMark 4: Helta Skelta "Nightclubbin" https://open.spotify.com/track/6pehS25bemWhbsqOkJE6fN?si=zQESoJIxQMOYHtfrPwyq0A&app_destination=copy-linkDave 5: Dead Jerk "Oscar" Audio  https://open.spotify.com/track/3kZByxLKxO8jUB6gkgt2Af?si=9af676d57d05400bMark 5: The Regular Boys "Newcastle Street deli'' EP https://open.spotify.com/album/5eGcxoIFaVVxiKdfbeRS4g?si=V0OikH0pQ4ChGNBajcw1gA   Extra shit: Mark 4 : Helta Skelta (live at Convenients, Perth)https://youtu.be/9yBycUU2Zb4 Dave 5: Dead Jerk (Live at Dirty Merkin studio) https://youtu.be/f6FxMIvHdnI Mark 5: The Regular Boys "Bad behaviour" video https://youtu.be/r0MuOKStQys Felicity Groom : The view from here, RTRFM92.1 https://youtu.be/bp0PlEnj7CM Abbe May "Mammalian locomotion" cool videohttps://youtu.be/oLGfeVH-ftI Theme tune and all music heard on the show performed by: David Lee OwenContact the team: fivefrom7sand12s@gmail.comfollow us:Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089236598175Thanks heaps for listening to the show
