In this week of Ed3: Unplugged, Serj Hunt and Scott Meyer discuss the role of AI in education and how it can help teachers become builders. We explore the four identities of a teacher, beginning with a reporter who regurgitates information and ending with a role model who competes with AI-powered chatbots that can teach students on their own. We then dive into tools for teachers to use AI to improve their classroom instruction. The first is Nolej.AI, which transcribes and summarizes classroom lectures, creating flashcards and definitions for students to review. The second, Save All AI, enables teachers to create and share flashcards on any subject with their students. Then we look at how AI could take note-taking to the next level, allowing students to capture ideas and conversations using microphones, which can then be shared and expanded upon. In the future, more of the labor market will focus on fractionalized small bounties that freelancers can pick up and complete. Learning ecosystems are networks of learning resources that can be adapted around a specific learner's needs or interests. Serj Hunt is working to develop these ecosystems with City as a School. In this podcast, Hunt argues that schools and teachers are asked to be everything to everyone: counselors, career advisors, mentors helping teens go through puberty, and educators working on getting students "market-ready." That's a lot.  In Hunt's mind, we have learning resources, such as within a city, that we can use to customize and curate educational experiences. Colin Reynolds is a former teacher now working to build accessible learner records. In his position at the Education Design Lab, he is leading a collaborative project with the US Chamber of Commerce to accelerate the adoption of learner employment records using AI. In this conversation, we remember our early days in radio in the Upper Midwest before diving into how digital records can actually improve learning, help teachers, and unlock opportunities. In the echo of the FTX collapse, how we talk about web3 will forever change. Blockchain tech is perfect for credentials, as long as no one knows. In this audio essay kicking off season 2, we talk about how web3 as we previously understood it is dead, and how new iterations of web3 are now ready to emerge.
