#10 The Creative Process and The Role of Self-Trust

#10 The Creative Process and The Role of Self-Trust
Exploring the Creative Process and the importance of Self Trust. What is your creative process? What are the stages or steps that bring an idea to fruition? A quick Google search will bring up the various 5- 7 step models that describe linear stages of development. How real is this for most creatives? In today’s episode, we share our own creative process (or lack of) and discover what makes a process successful or not. As we talked, the theme of self-trust showed up as the foundation of the individual process. Whether you are comfortable knowing and navigating distinct stages of the creative process or whether you set the conditions up in the hope you can wing it. There will be some things that you do, repeatedly, and that you rely on, over time these things can be described as your individual creative process. As tempting as it might be to imagine a creative process for ourselves- often not much is gained from trying to impose a process on ourselves. Perhaps the creative process can be defined as ‘learning to work with yourself as you are and not as you wish you could be.’Getting to know how we ‘work’ takes time, a process develops as a result of looking for patterns in what we ALREADY DO. Noticing what works and what doesn’t, even if that means having a kind of 'non- process'; because sometimes it helps to hear that lying on the floor listening to music, or intentionally unravelling with a YouTube binge IS part of a process. If it works, it works. Creative Challenge: Listen to music while enjoying a coffee. Doesn’t have to be a coffee if you’re caffeine sensitive, although there is something to be said about a manageable caffeine buzz whilst listening intentionally to music, it is activating. #9 Ways Creatives Trap Ourselves in Our Own Psychology

#9 Ways Creatives Trap Ourselves in Our Own Psychology
Why do we get stuck in our Creative Life? It’s pretty easy to tie ourselves in knots trying to think our way out of problems. Creative types think a lot, sensitive, intuitive types think even more. In today’s episode, we explore some of the different ways our own thinking (psychology) can hold us back.Ever heard yourself say the sentence “I just need to …(fill the gap) ‘have more time’ ‘ be in the mood’ ‘make more money’ ‘work harder’ ‘do more research’ These kinds of statements masquerade as self-awareness and self-responsibility, when they are in fact a heavy condition weighing us down and preventing us from knowing our next ‘inspired action.’Join us as we talk through more examples of mental traps such as; ‘uprooting’ (self-rejection), ‘surrender’ (active flow or passive procrastination?), 'beliefs' (there is a right way to do something) and more.Creative Challenge. Let us know in the comments what resonates and subscribe for more! This week's Creative Challenge: Part 1) Plant some seeds! What creative ideas are circulating in your system? Set them free with this journaling exercise. Set a timer for 5 minutes and run wild with every suggestion that comes up, it can just be words or feelings, and does not have to be fully formed ideas- it's just a seed! Take your favourite idea and blow it up to it's most expanded vision- just for fun. Part 2) Unconscious agreements audit: Now you’ve got your ideas… “what's stopping you?” What do you (just) need to do? Start this journal exercise (5 mins) with the sentence template: “I just need to…. (fill in the gap) Set the timer for 5 minutes and go for it, start writing. You'll be surprised to find a whole bunch of things that you ‘think’ you need to have or do, before you can move forwards. We all have these non-specific goals clouding our vision- it’s good to know what we unconsciously believe we need. It helps us see things differently and brings us closer to our next inspired action step. If you want to go further; consider taking your findings from both these exercises into a creative coaching session with a trained listener or a friend that listens with the intention to spot non-measurable goals- the fast track for breaking out of mental traps.About The Hosts: Gemma KauffmanIntuitive and introspective, Gemma credits her recent decade of ‘wrestling with complexity’ (aka abstract painting) for connecting her with her deepest desires and for making it through the initiation of maiden to mother. #8 Where Am I? Is My Dream Still My Dream?

#8 Where Am I? Is My Dream Still My Dream?
In a society obsessed with identity markers and asking the question ‘Who am I’? We often forget to ask ourselves a more subtle but equally important question - ‘Where am I’? Where am I in relation to my own life trajectory? Do I still want the same things that I once did? It’s often in times of crisis, we recognize the need to locate ourselves as a first step. How we ‘map’ ourselves in these moments impacts the level of self-inquiry. In today’s episode, we discuss the role of Intuitive Creative exercise when it comes to facing up to difficult questions and share our personal experiences.   Creative Challenge: For 10 minutes journal on the questions: Is my dream still my dream? It might help to first clarify what your dream is and go from there. Once the timer starts, keep writing until the 10 minutes are complete. #tgfcreativechallengeConnect with us at @goldenflowerpodcast on InstagramTheGoldenFlower youtubeAbout The Hosts:Gemma KauffmanIntensely intuitive, introspective, former wild child Gemma credits her recent decade of ‘wrestling with complexity’ (aka abstract painting) for connecting her with her deepest desires and for making it through the initiation of maiden to mother. #7 The Creative Journey | Why Intuition Is So Important
Creative expression is an invitation to higher levels of consciousness. But what does the creative journey actually look like? Is there any beginning or end?  It seems the most significant moments only make sense in retrospect. In today's episode, Angela and Gemma share some of the most pivotal moments on their individual creative journey. Both describe the intuitive way they have found their path and how each stage brought deep change and transformation into their life.Angela a writer and digital artist tells us how her return to the U.S from Japan was the catalyst for a new stage of her Creative life and how she was called to create moving sacred Geometry as living meditations.Gemma - is an INFP abstract painter- this makes her an intensely intuitive problem solver. She walks us through three very significant stages of her journey that created a foundation for her unique painting approach. What do random starting points, relentless expectations, fierce attention and revelation have to do with a painting process? We hope you hear your own creative journey in our stories and consider where you are and what might be your next step. If you already know how essential your intuition is for navigating your creative journey and you want to strengthen this part of you, then our upcoming free workshop is the perfect next step! #6 Fantasy Life and Why We Need It- Imagination and Collective Dreaming
Do we need a Fantasy Life? The images and ideas that emerge from within us, often at odds with reality, are too easy to dismiss. But the inner realm of fantasy shows us our personal mythology, and the archetypes we inhabit. The imagery and symbols of our inner world, have meaning and the capacity to raise our experience above the reductive tyranny of the literal. If we run from our fantasies we miss the alchemical forces that shape us into what we really are. We must find a way to honor the symbolic life internally. No matter how surreal and unrealistic, our fantasies contain codes for our liberation. In this episode, we discuss: Fantasy vs vision Fantasy as an energy generatorSynchronicity and imaginal spacesCollapsing into contractionCreative Challenge Resources: The Uses of Fantasy https://www.cslewisinstitute.org/reso...Creative Challenge : What do you look like as a Cafe? #5 Creatvity as Self Development

#5 Creatvity as Self Development
Join us as we explore the role of creative expression in self-development; transmuting difficult feelings and giving a voice to the more suppressed aspects of ourselves. We all struggle with emotional complexity, blocks and mechanisms. Is it possible to initiate a self discovery journey that helps us move through ‘that which is harder to reach’? What kind of creative process could you embark on that would give you full permission to be as intense as necessary? This Week's Challenge: Amplification! Interface with your emotions through your creative expression. Intensify your drama! More, more, more…. MORE!!!When we hit upon some stuck, dense energy in our system that we don’t know how to shift. How about viewing this density as an invitation to let the emotion lead and go ‘all in’ with a creative exploration? Choose a familiar modality/style of expression (dance, paint, voice, writing etc) choose something that allows you to relax and freeflow. Dance, write, paint until you feel a ‘shift’ . Let the form of expression ‘hold’ the energy of the emotion as it transmutes through an unfolding story (conscious or unconscious) or abstraction, symbols, gestures. Go with every suggestion -almost on autopilot - dreamy and surreal. Embody a delicate balance of surrender and curious attention. Let the intentional and amplified expression do its thing. Be intense as you need, just keep going. #4 Resistance At The Precipice
Resistance ‘that internal force that stops you from showing up as your best’. 'Resistance at the precipice' can be an infuriating place of ‘stuckness’ right when we are on the cusp of a breakthrough. Even though we know how important it is to take risks, let ourselves fail and make mistakes, and grow from the experience, we still get caught in negative, loops, wondering why (tf) is this so difficult???!! Why, when we want something so much, is there so much pushback? If you feel a fog of fatigue engulf you as you bring to mind the different ways you encounter your shadow side aka resistance. You know you're not alone! “Resistance will tell you anything to stop you from doing your best work” ~Steven Pressfield. Why is it that ‘knowing’ (what the problem is), doesn’t seem to help that much? Well, in today's episode Angela and Gemma are delving into their shadow side and discovering just who and what is on their resistance team. No strangers to the push and pull of the creative process, they each share what has (and hasn’t) worked for them in their battles with resistance. It’s not over till it’s over…. This Week's Challenge:In this week's challenge, we develop a relationship with our resistance mediated through the NVC (Nonviolent Communication) list of needs. #3 Soul Language: How Our Essence Speaks

#3 Soul Language: How Our Essence Speaks
In today’s episode, we continue the flow from last week, where we began a journey to align with our ‘emergent essence’ and discover where that might take us creatively. Join us as we distill our findings further and find the value that lies beyond the written word and in the realm of the abstract- the language of the soul.Soul Language has the capacity to lead us into the depth of our human experience, It is our invitation to return to a unique unfolding of ourselves with appreciation for our inner world. The soul does not thrive in a fast-paced world of constant activity. Modern life has us under pressure, we want to be efficient, productive, and successful. Thus, even in the subtle realms of creative seeking, there is a temptation to try and ‘pin the butterfly’ - to latch onto something - to say this is it! “ I know what I’m doing now” and “Here’s my blueprint” and then suddenly ‘puff’ it all evaporates and we are left wondering what was that sudden moment of clarity? Join Angela and Gemma as they share their personal ‘inspiration constellations’ and coach each other in real time to let go of what they think they know about the next chapter of their creative life and open to the subtle signposts that point to the ‘flourishing of fruits, yet unseen’ Mentioned in the episode: James Hillman-Depth Psychologist said (soul) “is a perspective rather than a substance, a viewpoint towards things rather than a thing itself”Put simply; the soul is too vast, it's impossible to pin down and if we wish to gain the valuable insight at this level then To reward us for our attention and curiosity we are given signposts and subtle cues that require a fluent alertness if they are to signal us is the direction of ‘flourishing fruits, yet unseen’Connect with us at @goldenflowerpodast on InstagramTheGoldenFlower youtubeAbout The Hosts:Gemma KauffmanIntensely intuitive, introspective, former wild child Gemma credits her recent decade of ‘wrestling with complexity’ (aka abstract painting) for connecting her with her deepest desires and for making it through the initiation of maiden to mother. #2 Who Am I? - Reclaiming The Creative Identity
Who Am I? In today’s episode, Angela and Gemma discuss the difficulties of (re)claiming creative identity. Join us as we explore the tension that comes from asking the difficult question “‘who am ?I’” (now) and share stories and exercises that help shift the energy out of overwhelm and into curiosity. To kick us off, Anglea shares the poem by Oriah Mountain Dreamer. A poem written in brilliant defiance to the numbing question that seems to dominate social interactions “what do you do?”Creative expression is deeply personal. It stands to reason that there is often confusion between who we consider ourselves to be and what we can imagine ourselves creating and expressing in the world. Our sense of self naturally becomes entwined with our roles and home life. It’s easy to get lost and lean on roles to help us bolster an inherently unstable identity, but we know this is not who we are. Often it’s initiations such as motherhood, grief and loss that dissolve our notions of identity and connect us with our essence.“I want to know what sustains you when all else falls away” Inspiration Constellation Exercise:This is an adaption of coaching exercise designed to get you tapping into what is lively and inspiring for you now! Identify 5 people or creations (book, film painting, Instagram post) that inspire you. Ask yourself ‘What is it about this person (or creation) that is inspiring me?’Write down your answer and then ask yourself again ‘What is it about that (that inspires me?)Keep going until you have some charge… a sense of the light bulb powering up. Then you have captured the essence of the inspiration. This exercise works well as a visual mind map on large paper- use a collage of images. #1 Creativity as An Act of Rebellion
Is rebellious energy necessary as a catalyst for creative expression? In today's podcast, Gemma and Angela grapple with the inner and outer dynamics of the Creative Rebel. Join us as we riff on the necessity of ‘pushing back’ and claiming space for our creative spirit. We draw inspiration from Blessed Are the Weird: A Manifesto for Creatives and flow into a lively discussion on why honoring creativity is not vital to our own self-exploration but is an integral part of re-envisioning humanity. Gemma goes back 15 years to a pivotal moment that was the catalyst for her entire abstract painting journey.
