Teaching recorders in the elementary music classroom can be a challenge. In my "How do I use this resource" and video I provide detailed ideas about organizing the instruments and suggestions for management and curriculum. I usually teach recorders at the 4th and 5th-grade levels. Once all the instruments are ready, materials organized, and systems in place, the students enjoy playing the recorder. Here is a FREE template Fun With Rhythm Blocks in the Music Classroom to use for practicing writing rhythms in the elementary music classroom. This template uses "beat boxes" to reinforce the idea of a beat and the number of "things" that can be in a beat.I found these rhythmic dictation blocks and use them with this template. I also use them with my Music Writing Templates for the Elementary Music Room for Winter/Spring/Summer. PLAYING THE RECORDER IS FUN FOR STUDENTS! Using a "karate" belt system in the music classroom for measuring progress and rewarding success is a fantastic tool. I have used Music K-8 and Music Play Online Materials which are both fantastic. The challenge came with setting the rubrics, testing, grading, and recording the grades. I created a recorder belt test form for the students to complete before testing which saved me time. This music class report card lets the classroom teacher know how their "specials" time went. Great way to communicate quickly. Here is a link to the video.
