Our Editor's Take

The host of Join Us in France Travel Podcast was born and raised in France. Annie Sargent spent her childhood in the country before moving to the UK and then the US for 18 years. In 2005, Sargent returned to her homeland with her American husband and daughter. She thought it was about time to be closer to her family.

This move prompted a journey of rediscovering France. A lot has changed since Annie went away, and there was so much she didn't get to see as a child. She started to explore all that the region had to offer a curious adult, from art to history and wine. Moreover, Annie witnessed the joy of seeing everything for the first time through the eyes of her partner and child. The experience ignited a passion for anything French, and she couldn't keep it all to herself. So, she created a podcast to help share the love.

When Join Us in France Travel Podcast began in 2014, it was a two-woman show. Annie shared the microphone with her friend Elyse Rivin. The cohost is an American who's been teaching fine art and guiding cultural tours in Paris for over a decade. The duo spent the first year of the podcast in conversations about places they'd visited.

As time went on, Elyse found that she couldn't dedicate her full attention to the podcast. She stepped down as a host and let Annie take full control while often coming on as a guest. When the pair is not discussing the benefits of life in France, cinema, or the history of aviation, Annie invites various guests. Avid travelers to the region share their top destinations. They also reveal tips for getting along with locals, ways to get around on a budget, and more.

The main objective of the Join Us in France Travel Podcast is to help people plan their trip to the country. But the second purpose is to make listeners fall in love with France as the hosts did. New episodes premiere on Sundays.

Hidden Gems of the Gers, Episode 475
In this episode Join Us in France, Annie and Elyse embark on a remarkable journey through the Gers region in France, uncovering its hidden charms and age-old allure. And how about delicious gastronomy? It's all here! Our adventure begins at the serene Abbaye de Flaran, a historic Cistercian abbey now serving as an art museum, where we delve into centuries of history and art. The Gers region, with its seasonal attractions, reveals its best-kept secrets between March and early November. We weave through the picturesque bastide town of Montréal du Gers and the unique circular village of Fourcès. Here, we encounter the friendly local hospitality at a bakery, indulging in the delightful regional specialty, croustade. Our journey takes us to the impressive Roman site of Séviac, famed for its well-preserved mosaics, a testament to the region's rich Roman heritage. Time constraints lead us to bypass the museum in Eauze, but the visit to Séviac alone leaves us in awe of the historical depth of Gers. The day's exploration culminates in the enchanting village of Larressingle, a miniature version of Carcassonne. This small, circular walled village, complete with medieval ramparts and a church, stands as a symbol of historical preservation, partly restored thanks to international contributions, notably from American donors. Throughout the episode, we highlight the importance of planning, especially for dining options in these rural settings, and the role of global efforts in historical preservation. The Gers region, not just a stop on the Camino but a destination in its own right, is rich in both history and gastronomy. We delve into the culinary delights of the area, from its famous duck dishes to the renowned wines of Madiran and Jurançon.
