On this episode JD Boudreaux speaks with Ellen DeValcourt and Charlie Caruthers. Ellen is a 2002 graduate of the LSU Health Science Center-Shreveport and was voted the Outstanding Student of the School of Allied Health Sciences class of 2002. She is an APTA Credentialed Clinical Instructor for education of physical therapy students for P.T. programs from LSU – New Orleans and Shreveport, University of St. Augustine, and University of South Alabama. Ellen specializes in orthopedics, neurological conditions and vertigo symptoms (vestibular rehabilitation). Originally, Ellen is from Jeanerette, LouisianaIn this episode, Mr. Charlie Caruthers and his wife Jackie detail the amazing rapport they developed with Ellen while Charlie recovered from statin-induced myositis and rhabdomyolysis. It’s a Good Day to Have a Good Day!! The Experience of Clinical Students at MTS
On this episode JD Boudreaux speaks with four current doctoral physical therapy students from LSU Health-Shreveport. Leah Angelle, Matthew Fleming, Kailey Lejeune, and Emily Navarre recently completed a 6-week PT clinical rotation at an MTS Therapy and Wellness outpatient clinic. Each student shares their experiences and favorite aspect of their current rotation. In addition, each student shares their advice on applying to PT school, what is their favorite class in school so far, how has COVID-19 influenced their progression, and what they are excited about in the future. On this episode JD Boudreaux speaks with Mike Sheffield. Mike graduated from LSU School of Allied Health Sciences- New Orleans in 1978. He has over 40 years of clinical experience in a variety of settings including hospital acute care, outpatient, sports medicine, home health and skilled nursing care. Mike specializes in Orthopedics, Sports Injuries and Rehabilitation, joint replacement and soft tissue disorders. Mike received the Dave Warner Award for distinguished service to the Louisiana Physical Therapy Association and was elected to the LPTA Hall of Fame in 2017. In this episode, Mike details his path to success throughout his illustrious career. He describes some of the major changes in the field of physical therapy including the establishment of the Louisiana Physical Therapy Board and the benefits of being an active member of your professional organization. On this episode JD Boudreaux is joined by co-host Brian Soignier, as the duo visits with one of Brian’s mentors, Dr. Gary Gray. Gary received his initial education as a physical therapist in the mid-1970s. He immediately pursued additional training as an athletic trainer, personal trainer, and as a strength and conditioning coach. Realizing the common thread of creating transformational environments to enhance the lives of others being the science of movement, he developed the discipline of Applied Functional Science®. With his ongoing passion and mission of learning and sharing more, and with the goal of educating, empowering, and encouraging others through an appreciation of the wonderfully and fearfully made human body, Dr. Gray established the Gray Institute. Gary has been married to his 7th grade sweetheart (Cindi) since 1976 and has been blessed with two sons and daughter-in-loves (Brad and Shallon, Doug and Valerie) and six grandchildren (Denyon, Aryah, Calyx, Zion, Xyler, and Lawson). In this episode, Gary discusses a variety of topics including how he defines an athlete, his rationale when treating individual patients, his vision for the future of the physical therapy profession, and how he would like to be remembered. Mark Hocke is in his third year as Head Strength and Conditioning/Associate Head Coach of the Ragin' Cajuns Football team after successful stints at Alabama, Georgia, Florida State and Texas A&M. While at Alabama, Hocke helped train over 35 players that signed NFL contracts, including 10 first-round NFL Draft picks. Hocke’s first coaching job was at Jesuit High School in New Orleans, La., where he served as a position coach and oversaw the team’s strength and conditioning from 2003-2008. His certifications include CSCCC Certified, FMS Screen Certified as well as USA Weightlifting Level 1 Sports Performance Coach Certified. EPISODE 6About our GuestOn this episode JD Boudreaux speaks with Pat Richards. A native of Dallas, Texas, Pat Richards is a certified athletic trainer and Associate Director of Sports Medicine for Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Football team. He brings a wealth of experience from the across the collegiate and professional ranks. Pat has earned a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Texas Christian University (TCU) and a Master of Science from the University of Utah. Prior to coming to Louisiana, Richards has had stints on the sidelines at Mississippi State (Assistant Athletic Trainer), Louisville (Certified Intern Athletic Trainer), and Utah (Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer). During his time as an undergraduate student at TCU, he completed an internship with the Dallas Cowboys during their 2012 preseason training camp and regular season.In this episode, Pat discusses his role as an athletic trainer as a part of the sports medicine team as well as the value of interdisciplinary teamwork to manage athletic injuries at the collegiate setting. In 2017, he received his 3DMAPS Certification through the Gray Institute. In 2018, he received his Level 1 Functional Dry Needling Certification through Kinetacore. Byrnes is the proud husband to Maria and father to Leah, as well as, Head Coach of St. Thomas More Cougar Lacrosse.In this episode, Byrnes describes his passion for the physical therapy profession, as he explains how advanced certifications, such as dry needling and 3D Maps, have influenced his treatment plans with his patients.
