One Plus One

Wondery

What happens when two geniuses meet? How do great duos -- like the Beatles' Lennon and McCartney, or Google's Larry Page and Sergey Brin -- manage to change the world together? What about when the sparks start to fly?

Every great collaboration is a love story. It’s intense. Passionate. Along the way, there’s flashes of love, hate, pride, ego, ambition, and brilliance. From Wondery, the company behind the hit podcasts "Business Wars" and "American Scandal," comes ONE PLUS ONE, an ongoing series about the fascinating stories of two great minds coming together to accomplish something they never could on their own.

In each series, hosts Rico Gagliano (Safe for Work) and Faith Salie (CBS' Sunday Morning) will bring you the ups and downs of the world's greatest collaborations, and what we can learn from these pairs in our own work and life relationships.

Our Editor's Take

Greatness isn't for everyone—sometimes, it takes two. The One Plus One podcast discusses some of the greatest human collaborations of all time. Every featured partnership on the podcast proves that two are better than one.

But what does it take to have a great collaboration? Friendships as a solid foundation help. But relationships tend to be complex and dynamic. This sometimes means, a good friendship isn't enough. Still, that rare moment in time occurs when the ideal meeting happens. From there, the world gets some of the best moments in history. Faith Salie and Rico Gagliano make their own collaboration as hosts for One Plus One. They're not promising world-changing results like the partnerships on their show. But they do make a great team.

Any team can only dream of forging a wonderful collaboration the way Shaquille O'Neal and Kobe Bryant once did. There was plenty of drama, but there's no denying the magic on the basketball court. They achieved a “threepeat” (three NBA championships in a row) together, after all. Shaq and Kobe had their own NBA soap opera moments. Their Los Angeles Lakers partnership ended badly. But when they worked together, they were hard to beat. The One Plus One podcast episode from 2019, before Kobe's tragic death, tells their story.

The podcast also discusses artists Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera over six episodes. Their stormy partnership forged great art from the both of them. One Plus One even has several episodes featuring Kanye West and Kim Kardashian, otherwise known as KimYe. Sometimes, all they need is for people to find their soulmate or kindred spirit. Then they can fulfill their great potential.

Many seek glory on their own. But a few lucky ones get to go on their journey with someone else to support them. In a world where trusting someone could be a quest all on its own, that alone is already a win. While One Plus One is no longer releasing new podcast episodes, the ones here are timeless.
