In The Metal - Episode 27 - Edouard Meylan talks to Dan Spitz and Johnny McElherron - 17/11/20
Fresh off the back of a triumphant success at the 2020 GPHG watchmaking 'Oscars' ceremony in Geneva, bagging not one but two cherished GPHG Aiguille awards for Best Chronograph, with the Streamliner Flyback Chronograph, and the Audacity award for the outrageous Endeavour Cylindrical Tourbillon, we are joined by the suave and charming CEO of H. Moser & Cie, Edouard Meylan.Renowned for its immaculate minimalist styling, the H. Moser timepiece is defined by a classic and refined profile, beautiful fumé dials, and of course a level of technical innovation which continues to push the parameters of uncompromising in-house Haute Horlogerie to new levels. There's also a wonderfully mischievous side to the Schaffhausen-based indie company too which is unique in the industry, and whether making a statement about what defines Swiss watchmaking, or reminding electronics corporations of their place, or even having a little fun at the expense of some of the established Grandes Marques, Edouard Meylan does not shy away from expressing his personal observations on the state of watchmaking current affairs, using his brand as a vehicle to capture the headlines.Little wonder then that this master of the marketing coup has seen this historic brand rise from the ashes in under ten years, to establish itself as one of the very coolest and non-conformist names in contemporary independent horology, picking up the baton and taking with it the prestige and pride of 100% Swiss Made traditional watchmaking.************************************************************************If you're not yet familiar, In The Metal is the inside scoop on the very best of independent watchmaking, and is brought to you each week by @irishwatchguy Johnny McElherron of The Watch Press, and the legend who is the former lead guitarist with thrash metal icons Anthrax, and now present day Master of Complications and the vanguard for US independent watchmaking, Mr Dan Spitz. If you appreciate an in-house, hand finished insight into the extraordinary world of independent watchmaking, then make sure you are signed up and subscribed to In The Metal, because we are the only backstage, access all areas, heavy metal watch show.https://www.inthemetalpodcast.comhttps://www.danspitz.comhttps://www.thewatchpress.comhttps://www.h-moser.com

In The Metal - Episode 22 - Machiel Hulsman talks to Dan Spitz and Johnny McElherron - 10/09/20

In The Metal - Episode 22 - Machiel Hulsman talks to Dan Spitz and Johnny McElherron - 10/09/20
In this episode of In The Metal, Johnny and Dan are joined by a Dutch watchmaker who epitomises the spirit of independent watchmaking. Armed only with the experience of a couple of part time foundation courses in watch school, Machiel Hulsman decided to turn his back on a successful career in banking and IT and embark on a new life, with a single minded objective of creating his own watch. This romantic idea soon turned into a voyage of discovery, but what he has achieved and continues to improve upon is nothing short of remarkable. His commitment to creating as much of his watch as is physically possible, in house and on his own, and including the daunting challenge of designing and manufacturing his own proprietary escapement, means he has already surpassed the point which would satisfy any connoisseur collector of independent haute horlogerie, and beyond too where most watchmakers would dare to venture. To quantify the significance of this true artisan watchmaker, when no less an authority than Frank Geelen, founder of Monochrome, wrote about Machiel Hulsman, he compared him to the living legend Roger W Smith.Compliments do not come higher than that, and we are delighted to bring another master of independent watchmaking into the spotlight for a conversation. Each week In The Metal takes a look beyond the façade and into the lesser-seen corners of independent watchmaking, where the true heart of this centuries-old craft beats. If you're not yet familiar, In The Metal is your inside scoop on the very best of independent watchmaking, which is brought to you by @irishwatchguy Johnny McElherron of TheWatchPress.com and the legend who is the former lead guitarist with thrash metal icons Anthrax, and now present day Master of Complications and the vanguard for US independent watchmaking, Mr Dan Spitz. is a video/audio stream/broadcast/podcast which takes an informal, behind the scenes look at the fascinating world of independent watchmaking. If you appreciate an in-house, hand finished insight into the extraordinary world of independent watchmaking, then make sure you are signed up and subscribed to In The Metal, because we are the only backstage, access all areas, heavy metal watch show.If you enjoy what we're doing, and want to support us, please subscribe to our channel here on YouTube, so you don't miss an episode.https://www.inthemetalpodcast.comhttps://www.danspitz.comhttps://www.thewatchpress.comhttps://www.hulsman-timepieces.com

In The Metal welcomes two amazing young independent watchmakers, Gaël Petermann and Florian Bédat, whose eponymous brand Petermann Bédat has been turning heads with their astonishing 1967 watch, which boasts the true uncompromising haute horlogerie standards of technical complexity and immaculate finishing. These two young men have floored the critics with their first hand manufactured movement, the superb Calibre 171, which features one of the most deceptively complex watchmaking complications; the dead beat seconds, or seconde morte. A mechanical movement which ticks like a quartz. Looks easy, it's anything but.Having worked their way to forming their own company at names like A. In The Metal - Episode 17 - Patrik Sjögren talks to Dan Spitz and Johnny McElherron - 06/08/20
In this episode of In The Metal, we are joined by Patrik Sjögren of Swedish watch company Gustafsson and Sjögren, which produces some of the most inimitable and downright beautiful hand crafted wristwatches in the world.Born out of the searing hell-fire furnace heat of the bladesmith's forge, each watch is crafted from damascus steel, an ancient metal first used by the Viking warriors for their swords, axes and knives as it was harder (and therefore more deadly in battle) than any other metal.Less valued by their feared ancestors, who were much more interested in enemy skulls to the gallon, was the inherent beauty of the unique swirling patterns which the forging of layer upon layer upon layer of steels to produce damascus steel created. Needing to be extrapolated from within and developed by hammering,  grinding and sanding down, it is still produced using the same centuries-old techniques, but thankfully it's in much safer hands now with these wonderful Swedish artisans. We go as close to the fire as we dare to learn about the manufacture of the damascus steel, which is in stark contrast to the delicacy and finesse of the watchmaker's steady hand but which combine to create the exceptional and individually unique watches of GoS Gustafsson and Sjögren.  If you're not yet familiar, In The Metal is your inside scoop on the very best of independent watchmaking, with laid back online conversation with the personalities, innovators and inventors of artisanal horlogerie, where we get talking about watchmaking, life and music. It is brought to you by @irishwatchguy Johnny McElherron of TheWatchPress.com and the Grammy-nominated rock legend who is the former lead guitarist with thrash metal icons Anthrax, and now present day Master of Complications and the vanguard for US independent watchmaking, Mr Dan Spitz. Each week we're bringing indie watchmaking into the spotlight, and as well as talking to the greatest names of our time, we're hell-bent on introducing the emerging prodigies, in whose capable hands the future of this centuries-old craft is assured. If you appreciate an in-house, hand finished insight into the extraordinary world of independent watchmaking, then make sure you are signed up and subscribed to In The Metal right here on YouTube, because we really are the one and only backstage, access all areas, heavy metal watch show.https://www.inthemetalpodcast.comhttps://www.danspitz.comhttps://www.thewatchpress.comhttps://www.goswatches.com

Together with her husband Craig, also a master watchmaker who works side by side with her in their atelier, they form a dynamic force, and we find out about life at the bench, and the joys and challenges of being unique in their field. We also learn a little about their tantalisingly titled Project 248 and see if we can discover any secrets of their objective of developing a contemporary in house movement based on the English lever escapement which was once found in the finest pocket watches of the eighteenth century. Each week we're bringing indie watchmaking into the spotlight, and as well as talking to the greatest names of our time, we're hell-bent on introducing the emerging prodigies, in whose capable hands the future of this centuries-old craft is assured. For a truly fascinating insight  into the extraordinary world of independent watchmaking, and the people whose profound invention and creativity bring it all to life, then make sure you are signed up and subscribed to In The Metal in podcast format, and of course over on our YouTube channel too, where we illustrate each episode with full screen images. However you like it, make sure you don't miss an episode of this unique laid back online conversation, where we get talking about watchmaking, life and music, on the one and only backstage, access all areas, heavy metal watch show.https://www.inthemetalpodcast.comhttps://www.danspitz.comhttps://www.thewatchpress.comhttps://www.strutherswatchmakers.co.ukhttps://www.youtube.com/InTheMetal

In The Metal - Episode 10 - Vianney Halter talks to Dan Spitz and Johnny McElherron - 18/06/20
Join us for this unmissable instalment of In The Metal in the company of living legend and genius Master Watchmaker Vianney Halter. One of the most inventive creators of contemporary horologic art, ever since his extraordinary Antiqua perpetual calendar was unveiled in 1998, to the astonishment of a highly reserved watch industry, Vianney is rightly regarded as being one of the forerunners of what we know today as modern independent watchmaking. As no single artist can define all of art, so it is with independent watchmaking too, as it is comprised of all kinds of styles, invention and personalities. But if one man can define a genre of the niche, it is surely this Picasso of watchmaking, whose futuristic and abstract creations have inspired many of today's young watchmakers. In The Metal is your inside scoop on the very best of independent watchmaking, which is brought to you by @irishwatchguy Johnny McElherron of The Watch Press and the legend who is the former lead guitarist with thrash metal icons Anthrax, and now present day Master of Complications and the vanguard for US independent watchmaking, Mr Dan Spitz. However you like it, make sure you don't miss an episode of this unique laid back online conversation, where we get talking about watchmaking, life and music. https://www.inthemetalpodcast.comhttps://www.danspitz.comhttps://www.thewatchpress.comhttps://www.vianney-halter.comhttps://www.youtube.com/c/InTheMetal/videos
