Episode 13 Lola MartinezIn 2008, 22 year-old Liette Nicole Martinez who went by Lola, a graphic design student at New Mexico State University, was studying at Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne Indiana as part of an exchange program. In April of that year, Lola was found dead in a bloody crime scene in campus housing in Fort Wayne. Lola had been brutally stabbed to death and her killer also threw boiling water on her. The shocking discovery was made by one of Lola's roommates. Police soon learned that Tina Morris, the mother of another roommate of Lola's was missing and so was Lola's car. Tina Morris had been staying in the residence for the previous 2 weeks. Police wondered if Tina Morris too was in danger, or had she fled after murdering Lola. Episode 5 Jane BrittonIn January 1969, a brutal murder of a graduate student shocked Harvard University. Jane Britton was found raped and beaten to death in her apartment. The investigation rocked Harvard’s esteemed faculty when several anthropology professors came under investigation for the murder, who were under scrutiny because a red powder sprinkled at the murder scene paralleled an ancient burial rite. There were also whispers that Jane was involved in an affair with a professor, and her boyfriend, also a student, was interrogated several times. But no one could be connected to the murder, and Jane’s case went cold. Episode 4 Pam MilamIn this episode we discuss a truly devastating campus murder – the 1972 abduction, rape and slaying of college student Pam Milam. Pam was enjoying sorority rush week at Indiana State University in Terre Haute. She attended some evening events with her friends, and left a party before midnight to go move her car closer to the dormitory suite. She never returned. The next day her father located her distinct vehicle parked in a different spot, and in the trunk was Pam, bound and strangled. Authorities looked at numerous suspects, including a fellow student who abducted and raped at least 2 women, but the case went cold. Forensic Genealogy conducted decades later pointed to a suspect no one had ever considered – multiple offender Jeffrey Lynn Hand. Episode 3 Robert BechtelIn 1955, there was a shocking murder at Swarthmore College, in the rolling hills of Pennsylvania. A student, Francis Holmes Strozier, was shot in the head and killed as he slept in his dorm bed. The killer, 22 year old student Robert Bechtel, was the one who alerted others to his crime. But, Bechtel claimed that he was driven to kill others after being the victim of bullying, and at trial, used the insanity defense. Bechtel was institutionalized, but less than 5 years later was a free man. He went on to live a seemingly normal life – even becoming a professor at a college himself. Episode 2 Yeardley LoveAt the University of Virginia, famously founded by Thomas Jefferson, no student had ever killed another. In 2010, that changed. Popular and athletic senior Yeardley Love was found in her bed by her roommate, bloodied and battered. A hole in her bedroom door told police that her killer had been very angry – and one man in Yeardley’s life was known for his violent rages. Her ex-boyfriend, fellow senior George Huguely, was arrested for her murder. Huguely stood trial and was convicted. Yeardley’s mother and sister sued both the school and Huguely, but the suit against UVA was dropped. Episode 1 Jeanne CleryIn April 1986, first year student Jeanne Clery, a bubbly member of the tennis team, was brutally slain in her dorm room bed. The crime was incredibly violent and disturbing. But it did not take authorities long to find her killer, as he had confessed – and to everyone’s shock, he was also a Lehigh student. Josoph Henry told his friends he had killed a girl and stolen some of her stuff. Henry was quickly tried for the crime and sentenced to death. His sentence was eventually pleaded down to life in prison. But Jeanne’s legacy lives on, thanks to her parents. The Clerys sued Lehigh for lax security, and initiated a sweeping legislative trend that engendered a federal law named after their daughter. As a result of the Clery Act, colleges and universities that receive federal funds must be accountable for reporting crimes on their campuses, and ensuring that their students stay safe. 'The Clery Act' requires colleges and universities to report campus crime data, support victims of violence, and publicly outline the policies and procedures they have put into place to improve campus safety.
