Our Editor's Take

According to a YouGov Study, 41% of Americans believe in ghosts. This may be due, in no small part, to Spiritualism, a religious movement that began in the 19th century. The Foxes of Hydesville is a podcast that explores the origins of this movement and the Fox sisters, who played a pivotal role in it.

The Fox sisters were three young women in Hydesville, New York, who caused a national stir. The reason for this is that they claimed they were able to communicate with the dead. What initially began as an attempt to make money would grow into something with a far greater legacy.

One of the best aspects of The Foxes of Hydesville is its stellar voice-acting cast. Academy Award nominee Carey Mulligan, Phoebe Tonkin, Mckenna Grace, and Christina Brucato make up the main cast. They offer up excellent performances for each of their characters. Director Shawn Christensen also deserves praise for his superb direction.

Mulligan plays Leah Fox, the eldest of the three sisters. When she discovers that her two younger sisters, Maggie and Kate, can "talk to the dead," the entire town goes awry. This podcast tells their story from its beginning to its inevitably sad conclusion.

It is fitting that The Foxes of Hydesville is an audio drama instead of a movie. The podcast hearkens back to the golden age of radio dramas, which suits the story's mood. The sound design team does an excellent job of crafting an immersive experience.

The Foxes of Hydesville is ultimately a story about what happens when a lie becomes too large to control. It also explores how a lie can impact people for years, or decades, to follow.

Each episode of The Foxes of Hydesville averages about 20 minutes in length. The entire series consists of nine episodes, which premiere on Wednesdays.
