"Keep your head down and Work Hard." We've all heard this advice at some point in our lives. It suggests that to succeed; we should focus solely on our work, avoid distractions and keep a low profile. Undoubtedly, there is some truth to it. Diligence and dedication are essential for achieving our goals. You have to know when to look up, however, to truly excel and reach new heights.   Keeping your head down may shield you from distractions in the short term, allowing you to accomplish tasks efficiently. Problem is that it also narrows your perspective and limits your awareness of the broader opportunities and possibilities that surround you. By solely fixating on the task at hand, you may miss out on innovative ideas, valuable connections, and unforeseen avenues for growth.   To become even more successful, you must lift your gaze and look up. I grew up thinking that success was only possible when someone else decided it was time for me to succeed.   For example, you work hard for that promotion and every year, you hope and pray that your hard work gets noticed by your manager or someone senior within the firm willing to champion your career in the organization. Sound familiar?   That's waiting for someone else to recognize your success before you allow yourself to do so...and this brings the question of which came first? Evidence of your success or your beliefs around your success?   I believe it's the latter. When you believe in your success, you can easily persuade others. Ever heard of the cliche, "It's not what you say; it's how you say it?" It's the ENERGY behind how you say it. The more confident you sound, the less likely others will question you. Growing up, education was always seen as the path to success. It's how my parents grew up and it's what they instilled in us. This was a shared experience with many, if not most, of my Asian friends. Our parents pushed us to excel in school because they grew up under a system where better grades meant better opportunities upon graduation. As John Spinks, senior adviser to the vice chancellor at the University of Hong Kong, said "Education is the driver of social mobility". As I learn more about the roots of education in the United States; however, I start to wonder is education really the key to success? Why aren't there more employees of Asian descent, especially women, sitting in the corner office of Corporate America? While there may be plenty of junior level employees who are of Asian descent, the number seems to drop once you cross the threshold into senior management. Asians can't seem to advance to senior management roles within Corporate America. Is this due to the unconscious biases or perhaps even conscious prejudices against Asians? Or is this a symptom of cultural differences that lead to inconsistent management styles?
