The “R” Word: An Honest, Open, and Vulnerable Conversation with the Mother of a Child who has Down’s Syndrome
The “R’ word is exceptionally offensive and hurtful. Its flippant and insensitive usage affects families, individuals, and the ways that society perceives people with disabilities and/or Down’s Syndrome. It is unacceptable to have this word in our lexicon in 2021; there is, and ALWAYS has been, a plethora of words to choose from instead of using the word “retarded.” For Episode 19, Suzanne interviews her close childhood friend, Lauren Ash, who has a 4-year-old son with Down’s Syndrome. She is an activist in the community and believes deeply in eradicating the usage of the “R” word. She is incredibly honest and open with us in this conversation; we hope this episode is a jumping point for conversations within your own families and circles of friends. Erase. This. Word. QUOTE: “The words I really didn’t need to hear were ‘What are you gonna do about it?’”More About Lauren:Lauren Ash and Suzanne grew up around the corner from each other and met when they were 6 years old in first grade. They have been close friends ever since. Lauren holds a BFA from Boston College in Art History and an Associate’s Degree from Parsons School of Design.
