Ep 40 Manifesting Your Dream Birth with Jenna Ballard
Jenna began her career in 2006 as a certified personal trainer and mindset coach for celebrities like Ben Stiller, Katy Perry, Jeremy Piven, Saudi Arabian royalty, and the Marciano family (founders of Guess). In 2011, she discovered the world of emotional intelligence, experiential trainings, and somatic practices. She then realized she had a bigger calling and began studying human behavior, leadership, and a variety of transformational methods. She became passionate about coaching larger groups of influencers and leaders to make a responsible, profound, and sustainable impact in their relationships, companies, and communities. So, In 2016, she co-founded Ascension Leadership Academy (ALA) with her husband Brad Ballard  ALA’s students have collectively raised over $3.5MM for local non-profit organizations. As a mother of two boys, she is consciously creating the next generation of leaders and makes sure to be a giant 5 year old with them. She says "We don’t stop playing because we get older, we get older because we stop playing"Jenna is also an incredible artist on top of everything else she does! Check out her album on Spotify here https://open.spotify.com/artist/1WhXDiQSqFlFz0hz8paKxQWe dive into her 1st birth compared to her redemption birth and how the power of somatics and what we manifest and pray for is so important. I helped empower Jenna to navigate the gaslighting and bullying that most experience, but with her type 1 diabetes and of course being advanced maternal age I knew she would experience a little more than the average. She is a rockstar y'all she truly manifested a beautiful birth. Visit her website here https://jennaphillipsballard.com/I want to note that I do point out the things I witnessed not to diminish her incredible birth, but to bring attention to the abuse that is so subtle in the system that only the doula can spot it. Type 1 diabetes and over 35 years old are not reasons  to exclude you from the option of Home birth. Support the Show. For more info visit my website https://www.emmyrobbindoula.com/ or follow me on FB or Instagram @EmmyRobbinDoula
Ep 37 The Safety of Full Autonomous Pregnancy and Birth with Audrey Ross
May 5 2024
Ep 37 The Safety of Full Autonomous Pregnancy and Birth with Audrey Ross
On this episode I speak with Audrey Ross an in person and virtual birth keeper, coach, educator, mother, and amazing voice for "wild pregnancy" and "free birth". In this episode we delve into the realms of physiological birth and how meddling disrupts this process. We also cover how the hospital system influences licensed midwifery, and the impact of societal narratives on pregnancy and birth. What we are told by a fearful practitioner can absolutely influence our pregnancy and birth. From finding true peace through wild pregnancy and learning to fully trust undisturbed "free birth" this episode is the pinnacle of my transition from semi-support of a free birth without a midwife to FULL trust in a woman's desire to birth how God intended. You can probably hear the journey from episode 1 to now. I have always been trusting of a woman to birth, but learning from wise women like Audrey, I have learned my role in a birth, if I'm honored to be present, isn't to save a mother but to truly support her leading the way. I'm so grateful to Audrey for sharing her wisdom and we could have talked for hours but I tried to pack as much as I could on these topics into one hour. I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I did. Ep 36 Trusting Your Practitioner Blindly
Apr 28 2024
Ep 36 Trusting Your Practitioner Blindly
Lately my 1 on 1 trauma birth story processing sessions have not been with hospital birth... but home birth or birth center births where the MIDWIFE was acting like and Obstetrician. This is almost worse. With a hospital you are at least aware of what you are getting yourself into. Protocols, machines, medicine, schedules, timelines, pressure to perform on time, giving birth with a surgeon. When a mom hires a midwife they are looking for someone to support their true physiological birth and no intervention. Almost every mother I talk to feels like they were lied to. "I'm a very hands off midwife, I fully support your natural birth." Then 39/40/41 weeks approaches and they are telling moms natural ways to induce labor. This goes back to episode 27 Why are we messing with God's design. Then followed by Yovana's incredible HBAC at 43.1. I had a friend go to a midwife's class for couples to learn how to "support during childbirth" and she came to me after and said "I almost laughed because she said "does everyone remember the midwife's trick?" and they all responded with "take benedryl!". When she told me this my blood boiled. Why are midwives teaching THIS versus how normal prodromal labor can be and how to truly navigate it. A woman will usually be able to sleep when the waves slow down (usually during the day).  If she trusts that what is happening to her body is normal and flows with it, it may even allow her to progress. Position of the baby can be addressed with some spinning babies or rebozo work, some massage and music by the partner or doula, and telling her to trust her body and rest between the waves is the BEST thing to do. Instead now it's benedryl, castor oil, evening primrose oil, blue and black cohosh.... why? This is only ADDING RISK to your birth! Midwives should know this! Do they not SEE the transfer rate when they add benedryl and just tell them to sleep? That doesn't help. Then when they cervical check after cervical check and the mom is swollen or doubting herself now she transfers.... the cascade begins with ANY intervention. Even the natural ones. Stop worrying about going past 42 weeks either! Maybe your body gestates longer! Please please reach out if you need to work through some birth trauma or re write your birth with empowerment. Support the Show. For more info visit my website https://www.emmyrobbindoula.com/ or follow me on FB or Instagram @EmmyRobbinDoula
Ep 33 Why Should I Hire A Doula?
Apr 7 2024
Ep 33 Why Should I Hire A Doula?
I'm sure I can speak for most doulas when I say "most dads are not an experienced doulas". That doesn't mean dad isn't support person number 1. Dad should ALWAYS be support person #1. Hiring a doula can offer various benefits during childbirth, such as emotional support, advocacy, and knowledge about childbirth techniques. They can help you navigate the process, provide comfort measures, and offer continuous support, which can lead to a more positive birth experience and potentially reduce the need for medical interventions. We can GIVE DAD A MUCH NEEDED BREAK TOO! We have hormones that help us navigate birth from lack of sleep to not feeling hungry. Dads tend to get exhausted and hungry in longer births and don't feel comfortable just leaving his laboring wife to go eat a sandwich or take a nap. A Doula will provide space and permission for dad to attend to his basic human needs like going to the bathroom. Hiring a doula should be a well thought out job as well. Interview them. Get a sense for how they work. What services do they offer besides just doula? How educated are they? This is someone you are bringing into your birth space. You should really love them by the time you go into labor. Ep 31 Somatics and Birth
Mar 17 2024
Ep 31 Somatics and Birth
Somatic work in birth is important for several reasons:    1.    Trauma resolution: Somatic practices, such as body-centered therapy or somatic experiencing, can help individuals process and release any physical or emotional trauma experienced during childbirth. This can be especially beneficial for mothers who may have undergone a difficult or traumatic birth experience or even a woman who was exposed to birth trauma by story (that energy is sticky y'all).    2.    Bonding and attachment: Somatic practices can facilitate bonding and attachment between the parent and the newborn by promoting positive physical interactions and touch. This can help strengthen the parent-child relationship and promote a sense of security and trust in the infant.    3.    Pain management: Somatic techniques, such as breathing exercises, relaxation techniques, and movement therapies, can help manage pain and discomfort during labor and delivery. By learning how to tune into their bodies and regulate their physical responses, individuals can better cope with the sensations of childbirth.    4.    Postpartum recovery: Somatic practices can support postpartum recovery by promoting relaxation, stress reduction, and physical healing. This can be particularly helpful for mothers recovering from cesarean sections or other birth interventions, as well as for addressing any lingering physical discomfort or tension.    5.    Holistic well-being: Somatic work takes a holistic approach to health and well-being, addressing the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. By incorporating somatic practices into the birthing process, individuals can support their overall health and vitality, both during and after childbirth. This especially goes into breastfeeding and how the flow of oxytocin is important.Overall, somatic work plays a valuable role in promoting a positive and empowering birth experience, facilitating healing and recovery, and supporting the physical and emotional well-being of both parent and child. If you would like to join one of my somatic and empowerment workshops visit my website and upcoming events to purchase your ticket! This is good for a first time mom, VBAC/HBAC or redemptive birth, or even a mom in postpartum (at least 6 months postpartum) who feels dis-regulated or disconnected and wants to align with their body again. Ep 28 Yovana's 43.1 Amazing HBAC
Feb 25 2024
Ep 28 Yovana's 43.1 Amazing HBAC
I apologize for all the "likes" and "corrects" I say in this episode as I was just so freaking happy to be finally telling her story! The title says it all. This woman defied all the odds that are put on us as a birthing society from the medical system. Her first birth ending in an "emergency C Section" due to "failure to progress" at the hospital. She started with home birth, but when that 42 week date came and passed her midwife had her try all the "natural induction methods" including that pesky castor oil. Nothing worked. (Because her body and baby weren't ready) So she reluctantly transferred care to the hospital where the induction process began (foley bulb, ripening cream, breaking water.... the waterfall of interventions we talk about) and she labored without pain medication for days (and pitocin contractions are no joke y'all!) before getting the epidural and ultimately being labled as "failure to progress" at 4cm dilated. Her C Section recovery, as well as breastfeeding journey were difficult. So when she got pregnant again, she took the power into her own hands by assembling her team that would support her decisions every step of the way! And we did 10000%. Yovana had the ultimate test of patience, trust, and surrender in this journey. Above all, her faith in the Lord was so strong and she trusted that everything would all be ok. And it was. With being an HBAC (home birth after a c section), to going past 42 weeks (she went to 43.1), to her baby floating high and doing gymnastics and going from head down to breech to head down at 42 weeks... this mama is the Ultimate inspiration to any woman who was induced at 42 weeks, had a C Section, and wants to do an HBAC!  Find a practitioner who supports it, go birth in a state where it is "legal", and trust your body! Ep 27 Why Are We Messing With God's Design?
Feb 18 2024
Ep 27 Why Are We Messing With God's Design?
From due dates to interventions, we are constantly being made to not trust birth and God's design for us and baby. My entire belief around birth has evolved the longer I have been a doula. I have witnessed abuse and medical gaslighting from hospitals, birth centers, and home birth practitioners, but I have seen the most incredible outcomes with the moms who TRUST and surrender the most. The mothers who really really don't want to mess with anything. You are only able to fully do that when you really believe that God (or Universe depending on what you believe in) designed everything perfectly. Women shouldn't HAVE to resort to free birthing to avoid the BS. We should have a full support system so we can feel relaxed and at ease in our birth. I know many say "that is with just me and my husband"... but I feel that is from the fear of someone messing with your birth. What if you had a team that showed up and just supported you when needed? Hot/Cold Therapy, entertain older siblings, help dad get a much needed break, counter pressure you so you feel amazing each wave, make you something to eat while the partner helps you..... I feel it doesn't have to be free birth to receive the full autonomous birth. It has to be a team of people who TRUST you and have no fear and want to support you to have an amazing birth. I also love having someone who is trained to assist IF it's needed. That's just me. Everything starts with trust. Trust God/Universe's design! Support the Show. For more info visit my website https://www.emmyrobbindoula.com/ or follow me on FB or Instagram @EmmyRobbinDoula

Ep 24 Where does the fear start?
Jan 28 2024
Ep 24 Where does the fear start?
Maybe you are over 35? Maybe you tested positive for GD? Maybe you had a C Section before?  Maybe you tested positive for GBS? WHO CARES!!!! If you are a healthy well informed and empowered mama who takes good care of her body, you should not be treated any different than any other pregnant woman! I am beyond frustrated with the medical bullying and fear mongering that happens based upon the nonsense. I would LOVE to pick some midwives brains on this and truly find licensed practitioners who TRUST a mother and her baby. The unnecessary gaslighting needs to stop. If you are a midwife or practitioner who hears this and would like to discuss this topic with me, PLEASE reach out! I am someone who is always looking to educate myself further, but I think trying to "predict" things that are going to happen with a woman's body is not based upon science and trust. This is based upon unresolved fear and as a practitioner witnessing too many traumas yourself and not fully processing what truly happened and taking this into other births with you. Every body and baby are different and we should not strip a woman's autonomy (I use this word a lot in this episode) away based upon YOUR fears. If there are signs of distress or an unhealthy lifestyle, this is when intervention is necessary. Until then, trust your body and trust your baby! If  you want to watch my interview with Kristi Leigh on Bait and Switch and how to spot when this is happening to you click here https://americanmediaperiscope.com/counter-narrative-ep-147/Support the Show. For more info visit my website https://www.emmyrobbindoula.com/ or follow me on FB or Instagram @EmmyRobbinDoula
Ep 23 Adeline's Birth (My C Section)
Jan 21 2024
Ep 23 Adeline's Birth (My C Section)
This is meant to educate and empower you! Maybe you will hear your own birth trauma in my story and find it healing to feel seen, heard, or validated. I find as a doula and healer of birth trauma in women, many of us have experienced so many similar abuses. I do have to take some accountability for what happened in my labor, and that is why I chose to do this episode. Looking back I could have advocated harder, chosen a better option in practitioner, trusted my body more, worked on my baby's position in pregnancy, practiced more pelvic floor prep and worked on flexibility, and taken better care of myself (covid didn't really leave a lot of options). However, I believe I had the birth I did with Adeline to make me a better doula and go down the path I have. So for that I am grateful to be a warrior for other women and protect them with the intensity that I do. My mission is now focused on preventing birth trauma in as many women as I can as well as healing birth trauma that was experienced. A LOT of trauma is preventable with the proper education and trust in yourself to advocate for what is best for you and your baby. Not every birth is straight forward, and if it isn't "by the book" thats normal too! There are so many things that happen in labor that practitioners use to gas light women all the time. Learning what can be "normal" and trusting and preparing for all the possibilities and how you will navigate them is the best way you can prepare for labor. As always I am here to empower you to trust your instincts and believe your baby is wise and knows what they are doing. You can do this. You can also have a redemption birth if you had  birth trauma. Please reach out if you are looking to work through and prepare for your upcoming birth. Support the Show. For more info visit my website https://www.emmyrobbindoula.com/ or follow me on FB or Instagram @EmmyRobbinDoula
Ep 22 Induction and Intervention- The Waterfall Effect
Jan 14 2024
Ep 22 Induction and Intervention- The Waterfall Effect
From Castor Oil to Cervical ripening creams, they all have an effect on your labor in some way. There are many women who have inductions or take castor oil (for the "natural" induction) and have successful vaginal births. Is that the true goal? How was the baby affected? Blood Pressure? Length of labor? True experience? Did you feel rushed? On a clock? Gas lit into "progressing your labor" because your prodromal labor was taking too long? Were you doing things to please your practitioner because of THEIR fear? Herbs and tinctures have their time and place, but when you are using them to start or "Promote" labor, you are missing the point of spontaneous labor and the true benefit of BABY deciding when baby is ready to come. A mom can literally be in active labor or transition and contractions can begin to slow to 10-20 minutes apart because the mom is exhausted and the body and baby are telling the mom to SLEEP! Sleep is the greatest tool in birth! Time to take a nap and shut out all that "pressure to progress faster". Every little nap you will wake up with a STRONG contraction. It's incredible what I have learned and witnessed with sleep being the best tool. When a midwife places castor oil in front of mom and tells her she will need to drink, it makes me sad and sick. Don't even get me started on pitocin. You have heard me talk about it plenty and it's dangerous effects.  The more we mess with birth the more we will be shown not to. Trust your body, trust your baby, and don't ever do anything that doesn't feel aligned with your instincts. Support the Show. For more info visit my website https://www.emmyrobbindoula.com/ or follow me on FB or Instagram @EmmyRobbinDoula
