Our Editor's Take

MarsCorp is a comedy science fiction podcast. The show is a production of Definitely Humans, creators of the podcasts Hello Humans and Down.

In the podcast, the year is 2070, and the setting is Mars. E.L. Hob has just arrived to start her new job as station manager. The company she works for is MarsCorp, whose mission is to terraform the planet to make it suitable for human habitation. The corporation has seen to it that all aspects of the project go smoothly. So, of course, nothing actually goes smoothly. The station is dysfunctional and Hob tries to get things in working order. To add to her challenge, she needs to adapt to the base's alien culture. Early in her tenure, things begin to fall apart. Employees exhibit bizarre behaviors, and people end up dead. It's up to Hob to figure out what's going on.

Listeners may also enjoy the MarsCorp spinoffs. They include The Martin Chronicles, a prequel to the main plot. In this miniseries, the audience gets to know base manager Martin Mann's backstory. In MarsCorp: Human Capital, each episode focuses on one resident of the base. Bernard Egg finds himself playing the strangest game of "Guess Who." While in training, Brian Durant gets a tour of his brain from the inside. Jessica Horn endures lunch with her histrionic mother-in-law.

The podcast has received many accolades for its character development and smart humor. Listeners may find that a second listen will uncover jokes missed the first time around. MarsCorp presents a witty commentary on corporate culture and imperfect systems. It is also a critique of humans' increasing reliance on computers and AI. Listeners who love satire may appreciate the podcast for these reasons. Fans of audio dramas might enjoy the excellent acting and high-quality production values.
