We're here for straight talk, standing up for representation, breaking down stereotypes and challenging ableist perceptions. If you've want to explore the Autistic and/or ADHD experience via Korean and other Asian dramas you've come to the right place. We're here to discuss all kinds of neurodivergencies with a dose of scientific research and our own lived experience sprinkled on top. The Untamed - Autistic coded Lan Wangji Part 2
Finally we're back, with the long awaited part two of our deep dive into Autistic Lan Wangji. "It has been 16 Years....", Well, two months, but we know you've all been at the edge of your seats. We’re finishing our discussion of The Untamed, starring Wang Yibo (王一博) and Xiao Zhan (肖战). It’s one of the most watched series in Asian television history with 10 billion views domestically in China as of 2022 in China on one service alone, never mind the huge international success and acclaim it garnered. This all with a cleverly crafted and nuanced production that captured the spirit of the original novel, while being able to stay within the framework of China’s strict onscreen morality laws. Franziska (@wanderingfranzi) and J (@theflowerthatbloomsalone) are joined by enthusiastic fandom guests and fanfic writers Jie (@JieJie_AiNi), Kaey (@Firebrd86) and PaidSubscription (@PaidSubAO3) for a deep dive into autistic-coded Lan Wangji. In this part two, we discuss the Cloud Recesses as a haven but also a constraint on an autistic Wangji, as well as how Wei Wuxian was the first one to really perceive Wangji and hear “the melody of his heart.” Add in queer symbolism, how an autistic Wangji articulates the drama’s themes, and a chat about the fics our authors have written. Join us as four fandom nerds and one very enthusiastic cohost (who wants to binge watch it all again) talk about the concept of expansive love, what we see the characters doing post-canon, and how Lan Wangji might just have the best arc an autistic character could have. PS this pod is not spoiler-free! Plus be sure to listen to part one (released for Valentines Day) where we discussed which of Wangji’s traits resonated the most for us, what we loved about his character development as an autistic-coded character (is it one of the best arcs ever?), and how and why his relationship with ADHD-coded Wei Wuxian just works so well. Autistic coded characters: Lan Wangji in The Untamed
This Valentine’s Day, the feeling of sticking to the single log bridge with us until it’s dark is not too bad! Finally, we’re covering the Untamed, starring Wang Yibo (王一博) and Xiao Zhan (肖战). Yes, one of the most watched series in Asian television history with 10 billion views domestically as of 2022 in China on one service alone, never mind the huge international success and acclaim it garnered. In this part one of two, we discuss which of Wangji’s traits resonated the most for us, what we loved about his character development as an autistic-coded character (is it one of the best arcs ever?), and how and why his relationship with ADHD-coded Wei Wuxian just works so well. Join us as four fandom nerds and one very enthusiastic cohost (who wants to binge watch it all again) theorise a possible reason why the Lan clan has those 3000 rules and if in a modern alternate universe, Lan Wangji would make his own phone calls.Note: this pod contains spoilersPlus be sure to listen to part two (to be released shortly) where we will discuss the Cloud Recessess as a haven but also a constraint on an autistic Wangji, as well as how Wei Wuxian was the first one to really perceive Wangji and hear “the melody of his heart.” Add in queer symbolism, how an autistic Wangji articulates the drama’s themes, and a chat about the fics our authors have written. An Introduction to Confucianism for Asian Drama Fans
Hosts Sarah and Grace tackle the first in a multi-episode series on Confucianism, a topic that has been on our minds, and planning spreadsheet, since the beginning of the pod. We give a brief primer on what Confucianism is and how it impacts numerous aspects of life in Korea. We also discuss how it has influenced our lives and where we see it pop up in the Asian dramas we watch. In the language section, we talk about pesky romanizations and how to pronounce Yoo Teo's name, plus a refresher on how to say Lee Minho's name.Sign Up for Our Newsletter! It's Ok To Not Be Ok - What they got right with Moon Sang Tae
Join Sarah, Fran and J as we deep dive It's Ok To Not Be Ok from an autistic lens. Along the way we discuss and refer to what really rang true for us with his character and explain why. You might discover parts of his character you hadn't discovered before!Podcast Timeline:We thought it would be useful to have an outline of what we’re going to cover this episode, with time stamps. 🥳Our pre-episode catch up (mostly about Agust D): 1:14 A quick summary of the drama: 15:53Sang-tae’s autistic traits and what resonated for us, including why some of us love to rewatch our favourite shows so much: 17:14Why this drama always gets recognised for having a well written and well portrayed autistic character (hint, because the depiction works): 33.33What struck us about the relationships Sang-tae had with the people around him…this is so multilayered and intriguing: 41:47An in-depth and fascinating discussion of the interplay of trauma and autism as depicted in this drama (hint: autism plays a huge role in how we may experience trauma and CPTSD): 53:04The weighty and emotional issue of the responsibility of caregiving and of raising children with mixed needs and capabilities: 63:00A quick take on the depiction of violence in the relationship between the brothers and why it occurs and our perspectives on it: 70:30What didn’t work for us or what seemed off: 80:20Podcast Notes:Link about Naoki Higashida and his books https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/authors/175207/naoki-higashida/ Unmasking Autism by Dr Devon Price https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/688819/unmasking-autism-by-devon-price-phd/
