Lisianthus or 'Lizzies' to the flower trade - what a twirling, fluttering and unfurling little flower.      Paulie shares his fun and factual tips on how wonderful these little beauties are for weddings, bouquets and frankly any vase you like!  Even Lucy uses these as they are readily available in her local supermarket as well.  Inexpensive to buy in the supermarket or corner shop Lisianthus in shades of pink, purple and in creams and whites they can be paired with all kinds of other star performers such as peonies, roses or stocks and yet are also capable of stealing the show on their own. And they last for a long, long time.  Sometimes known as 'Prairie Gentlemen' or a 'Poor Mans Rose' - you can see way, as they have wistful, fluttering petals that unfurl in a roselike way and they herald from hot parries and barren deserts.  For the Floriography Fun Facts this week these flowery lovelies focus on Ivy.  With its historical references and Celtic drama - theres really so much intertwining the Ivy plant.  It symbolises not only friendships but also marital bliss and can be found through history, especially in Ireland, on monument stones dating back through hundreds of years. Fabulous Flowers tv duet, Lucy & Paulie are all about Hypericum this week.  An amazing plant or shrub with pretty flowers and a fantastic autumnal show or warm red berries.   Hear how it grows pretty much everywhere and in many different guises, it is even a butterfly favourite.   Some may know Hypericum by is other name too St Johns Wort. With Halloween nearly upon us, our Fabulous Flowers tv duo, Lucy & Paulie, concentrate on a real Autumnal favourite, Physalis - probably better known as Chinese Lanterns.  These architectural seed pods are a really textural and interesting addition to any display and as they are a paper thin, dried floral accessory they don't actually require water, so you can introduce them to so many different arrangements and displays. From the Greek for 'snout', these ravishing and fluffy blooms are used widely by Paulie for many event and celebrity displays and come in all kinds of heights and colours. In this episode the Calla Lily literally takes centre stage!....well nearly! ..... With its stand alone attitude and wide range of really art deco and oriental colours, the Calla Lily can take your breath away.   Often used on its own, it never fails to steal the show.   But wait a minute!... there is only one thing that could eclipse this beauty on stage and that is the extremely talented actor Bonnie Langford.  In her wonderful contribution to this podcast, Bonnie shares the story of how she had to literally balance on a platform on stage, whilst performing one of her most iconic songs as the lead in the hit West End Musical 42nd Street.  A Musical that the Fabulous Flowers tv duo Paulie and Lucy made it their business to see several times!  I think Paulie might have been counting up to just shy of twenty visits by the last performance ( which he also attended of course)!   Behind Bonnie Langford, on that West End Stage, .....what's there?... you've guessed it.... a huge vase of Calla Lilies.  But were they Faux or Real?....... listen and find out.  Bonnie also shares her blooms of choice for her vase at home if she were having a dinner party.  What a treat having Bonnie on the podcast.  A truly valued and uplifting contribution.   Paulie tells a marvellous Claridges Hotel story from a past party using Calla Lilies with Crystal Candelabras and Bakelite Chandeliers and a disastrous ladder incident. The Zinnia - a bringer of colourful joy to a patio planter, a roof terrace, pot or a cottage garden,  Shining brightly in any garden border and with their colour flair, Zinnias really are a horticultural delight!   Paulie shares his fun and factual tips on how to plant and enjoy these little late summer beauties. They are super easy to grow and very tolerant in our ever evolving warmer climates.   You can use Zinnias to make a vibrant and colourful table centre decoration to brighten up any lunch or dinner party, or a casual splash of colour on any window sill in a jam jar.  Zinnias have such an endearing message within the language of flowers - Floriography - and Lucy and Paulie share this and other wonderful stories  Did you know there are several different types of Zinnia and they each have different and rather engaging petal formations.  So there’s really a Zinnia for everyone as you can choose between not only their bright and joyful colour palette, but also their shape and texture too.  It’s a win, win!  For our Floriography focus this week, Lucy and Paulie wax lyrical on all things Hops. Just in time for the start of Autumn, this tall and inspiring bloom takes centre stage for Fabulous Flowers tv podcast this week.  Not something Lucy is familiar with, Paulie shares his passion for this unforgettable flower that brings such impact to displays he creates with his devoted team.  Eremurus is sometimes known as the ‘firework flower’ or even the ‘bottlebrush’ because of its far reaching, explosive inflourscense.  Hailing from Asia and central Europe it stands majestically in sunny climates and brings height and impressiveness at the back of any garden border or as a stand alone feature plant.  It not only takes the limelight…..but with its capability to tower more then ten feet over most other plants, it commands it! Hear what floral traumas Eremurus can bring for Paulie’s contract rounds when using it for decorations and celebration installations.  Although bringing joy to the beholder, it can be a tricky one to dismantle and clear away after its time is over.   With the Autumn equinox fresh in our minds and the hedgerows and trees beginning to bear final fruits before turning into their final hurrah with golden, red and orange hues, you need to hear all about how the Crab Apple has transcended generations and is till used to make a wonderful and sweet jelly.
