Our Editor's Take

City of Ghosts is a neo-noir audio drama podcast series. The show follows the tough, aloof Eleanor "El" Rivkin through the streets of '90s New York. El makes a living selling the secrets of the city's wealthiest residents. With her partner Prizrak, a reclusive computer hacker, she's a modern detective. Together, the two take a case looking into a mysterious murder. Soon, El finds herself embroiled in a complex conspiracy involving powerful people. As she works to find answers, she must also come to terms with her supernatural abilities. El hears voices, but they may be more than her imagination. One of those voices is the murder victim herself, speaking from beyond the grave. El then realizes this mystery is far more complicated than she thought.

Creators Carina Green and Ryan Patch spent almost three years developing this podcast. At the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the actors and production crew recorded in their homes. Using custom-built recording kits, the show came together from all over the world. Carina wrote the show and Ryan directed it completely over Zoom video conference. The two hold master's degrees in screenwriting from Royal Holloway, University of London. Together, the two filmmakers set out to create a unique audio drama series. With an intriguing musical score and immersive sound effects, the show is captivating and life-like.

Fans of detective stories and the paranormal will find a blend of both in City of Ghosts. The compelling characters fill out the gritty narrative. The cast includes Kevin Pollak, Brigette Lundy-Paine, and Rich Sommer, who play their roles with powerful realism. Listeners can join El as she tries to decide whether the voices in her head are real ghosts. With every episode, a new layer of mystery arises for her to investigate.
