Our Editor's Take

The podcast Latina to Latina is a place to celebrate women of color's achievements. In each episode, Alicia Menendez talks to Latinas in tech, business, politics, or the arts. Open and vulnerable conversations examine their upbringing and their journeys. They discuss challenges and successes. Most of all, they talk about persevering in a system that is anything but supportive of POC.

The host of Latina to Latina has her own achievements to celebrate. Menendez is an accomplished journalist. She has worked at MSNBC, PBS, and HuffPost Live. She reported on topics like the Boston Marathon bombing and the refugee crisis. Marie Claire called her a "Content Queen," while Elle magazine dubbed her "Broadcast Journalism's New Gladiator." Menendez also published The Likeability Trap. The book explores the struggles women face in positions of leadership. The journalist continues that exploration on her podcast, focusing on Latina voices. Her background qualifies her to ask great questions to elicit fascinating talks.

The Latina to Latina podcast shares the stories of extraordinary women. Such is the account of Katya Echazarreta, the first Mexican native to travel to space. There's the experience of Chef Claudia Sandoval, the single mom who won the sixth season of Master Chef. Their stories, as well as those of other guests, are inspiring yet relatable. They show the listeners that they can dream big and actually achieve those dreams, even if they come from a marginalized background.

The conversations don't feel exploitative, thanks to Menendez's thoughtful and intentional interviewing skills. Instead, she handles those accounts with civility and care. The guests talk about balancing growing companies with taking care of family. They discuss tending to their health care while being the trailblazers that they are. Most of all, they examine how their actions open the door to future generations.
