Today Emily discusses the advice that students are also given at school regarding their internships, which is to “be proactive.” Emily talks about how this MUST also include “asking before doing.” Here you will learn the benefits of mastering each task at you go to understand your industry, while hearing real world examples of why being “proactive” can not only go awry, but actually cause you to lose your internship. And if you do have a truly groundbreaking idea or new way of doing things, Emily will teach you how to protect this idea and get credit for it. Episode 13 is Emily White’s favorite music industry interview she’s done in her career. No offense to Seymour Stein, etc!. Today Emily interviews Emily White, who is not her. Emily White, sometimes dubbed by Host Emily as EW2 to avoid confusion, is from West Virginia and became a lightning rod in the music industry as an intern for NPR in 2012 based on a blog post she wrote called “I Never Owned Any Music To Begin With.” The Emilys delve into the chaos that ensued, and how EW2 went on in her career to positions at Billboard and is currently creating how we all consume music as a product manager at Spotify. Today is an “emergency” mini-episode in response to Emily’s recent live podcast taping w/ 5 Hofstra University students (the forthcoming Episode 11). Emily was shocked to learn that these students had cleaned toilets and received work texts at 2 AM that they were expected to respond to in the middle of the night (WTF?). Although we know that interning is a controversial, this is NOT what interning is all about. In this episode Emily shares her horror and disgust as a call to action amongst her fellow bosses for proper intern treatment and segues into her personal experiences of being sexually harassed and assaulted as an intern.
