Adult Child podcast host Andrea self-identifies as a complicated person. She invites her listeners to do the same as they embark on their own journey. This is a show with a lot of cursing and humor. It is also a show that is serious about healing from childhood trauma.
As she says in each episode's intro, Andrea is a recovering alcoholic. She's also the adult child of alcoholic parents. Andrea welcomes her fellow dysfunctional grownups with whom she is building community. She says one must feel the real feelings to begin to heal. The podcast provides a platform for acknowledging trauma with honesty. Shame or powerlessness can be challenging to identify. These things can feel easier to name with the support of other people who've encountered the same issues.
There are two new episodes each week on Wednesdays and Saturdays. On "Sh*tshow Saturdays," Andrea facilitates discussions with fellow "sh*tshows" about specific topics. One is about narcissistic abuse. Andrea begins by inviting her three guests to identify the narcissist in their lives. She also asks what type of narcissist they were and how they recognized this behavior.
The first guest says that their father was a malignant narcissist and an alcoholic. This manifested as both physical and verbal violence. The guest goes on to identify how this experience affected their romantic patterns. Narcissistic abuse survivors often find narcissistic partners in their adult lives.
Some Wednesday Adult Child episodes feature expert guests. One is Dr. Kenneth Adams. He is a therapist who practices eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) therapy. He and Andrea discuss A Light in the Dark: The Hidden Legacy of Adult Children of Sex Addicts. Though his book deals with an intense subject, the podcast shares its positive goals.
Adult Child offers a raw, honest discussion about mental health for people who are ready to heal. Episodes are between 30 minutes to one and a half hours in length.
