Bernard Collaery - Oil under Troubled Waters - Australia’s Timor Sea Intrigue.
Bernard Collaery is an Australian solicitor and barrister who specialises in litigation in high-profile catastrophic personal injury cases. He has acted for families of victims of the Thredbo landslide, the Royal Canberra Hospital demolition tragedy, the Glenbrook rail disaster in the Blue Mountains, the fire aboard HMAS Westralia and the tragic loss of an RAAF F1-11 in the South China Sea.Throughout his career as a solicitor, advocate and politician Bernard has been a fearless advocate for human rights. During his tenure as Attorney-General for the Australian Capital Territory, he introduced an independent law reform process that culminated in the drafting of human rights legislation, including anti-discrimination legislation.Bernard Collaery advised the East Timor Resistance for more than thirty years, providing advice on international law and other matters during the United Nations Transitional Administration from 1999. He acted for East Timor at the International Court of Justice in relation to a maritime sea boundary dispute with Australia.Currently Bernard Collaery is patron and honorary solicitor of various charitable and non-profit organisations serving Indigenous Australians and marginalised sectors of the community.He spoke with us about his book Oil Under Troubled Water - Australia’s Timor Sea Intrigue.About SEARCH and NIBSSearch is a membership-based democratic socialist organisation that links and enables socialist activists across political parties, generations and movements all around Australia. Bill Fletcher Jr is the executive editor of Global African Worker and the author of “They’re Bankrupting Us!": and Twenty Other Myths about Unions (2012). Having been an activist since his teen years, upon graduating from college Bill went to work as a welder in a shipyard, thereby entering the labor movement. Over the years he has been active in workplace and community struggles as well as electoral campaigns. He has worked for several US labor unions in addition to serving as a senior staff member in the national peak body AFL-CIO.Bill Fletcher is the former president of TransAfrica Forum, a Senior Scholar with the Institute for Policy Studies, an editorial board member of BlackCommentator.com, and involved the leadership of several other projects. He is also the co-author (with Peter Agard) of The Indispensable Ally: Black Workers and the Formation of the Congress of Industrial Organizations, 1934-1941 (1987), and the co-author (with Dr. Fernando Gapasin) of Solidarity Divided: The crisis in organized labor and a new path toward social justice (2009). He has also published a mystery novel, The Man Who Fell from the Sky. And of interest to many SEARCH members he is the author and co-editor of a book on the legacy of Amilcar Cabral the leader of the independence movement of Guinea Bissau and Cap Verde- the title of that is Claim no Easy Victories.
