Welcome to Episode 58 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. I’m Shannon Mattern, your host and founder of the Web Designer Academy where we teach the business side of running a web design business, and if you wanna make a consistent, full-time income as a web designer but you’re struggling with things like pricing, boundaries, mindset and marketing and you’re EXHAUSTED from going it alone… well, my friend, you’re in the right place.  Love the show? Tap here to leave us a rating and review! This week I’m talking all about whether or not you should work with friends and family in your web design business. My top 3: It’s crucial to set boundaries and maintain professionalism when working with friends and family to foster a positive experience for both of you. You should never compromise your business for the sake of personal relationships. It’s okay to say no if it means maintaining a positive working experience for you. Every decision you make, including working with friends and family, has a cost in terms of future time, money, and capacity, and sometimes, the emotional isn’t worth it. I also share: How to navigate pricing challenges when working with friends and family. The importance of effective communication to maintain professionalism and boundaries. Power dynamics that pop up and how to handle them in a professional manner.   PS - Grab my brand new training that breaks down the exact pricing strategy that the high-earning web designers inside our Web Designer Academy used to confidently charge five times more without having to work more or offer more services at https://webdesigneracademy.com/pricing.

Anchen le Roux is the creative director at Simply Digital Design and the co-host of the Page Builder Summit. She’s been a contributor to the Wordpress community for over 7 years and specializes in summit and funnel development, website development, and VIP days as a web design expert. 3 key takeaways: Page Builders are just as valuable, if not more so than custom-coded websites because the value is in the strategy and execution of the design. Productizing services and setting specific packages and systems helps establish boundaries from the start. Summits and networking sessions are critical for web designers to learn from each other and gain insight into other tools and strategies. Six Sneaky Places Your Web Design Business Might Be Leaking Time and Money EP 56
Welcome to Episode 56 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m sharing a special look at a training I did earlier this year on identifying where your web design business may be leaking time and money. My top takeaways: Many web designers, including myself, initially approach their business as if they were employees, treating clients as their bosses. This mindset often leads to over delivering, lack of boundaries, and allowing clients to dictate the entire relationship. Web Designers often fall into the habit of people-pleasing, and doing anything possible to avoid conflict and keep the client happy. Establishing clear boundaries from the beginning can prevent issues from occurring later. Setting mutually empowering boundaries is crucial for plugging leaks of time and money in a business. Boundaries aren’t about building walls but about establishing ground rules and communicating them to clients. I also talk through: Common issues that web design businesses face, such as undercharging and over delivering. Problems like the "employee mindset," people-pleasing, lack of boundaries, and the self-concept of being an order taker. Solutions to address these problems and become a successful web designer, including setting boundaries and positioning oneself as a collaborative consultant. Steve Schramm is the owner of NorthMac Services, a boutique web design agency focused on creating Wordpress sites for entrepreneurs. How to Stop Doing It All By Yourself with Stephanie Hudson of Focus WP EP 52
Welcome to Episode 52 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m chatting with Stephanie Hudson of Focus WP about how to stop doing everything by yourself and get some of your time back without breaking the bank. Focus WP is an on demand team that gives web service providers a helping hand with the tasks that they wish they could outsource. They provide experts to support your business and let you focus on your zone of genius without worrying about the quality of the end product. Key highlights from our talk: There’s a difference between being a “control freak” and a good service provider. Not outsourcing because you care about the quality of your service just means you care about your clients. The language you use can shift the power dynamic and be the difference between selling a service and selling a valuable investment in the client’s eyes. Selling outcomes and ROI versus a certain number of pages with so many features will allow you to pre-frame the value of your services and charge more. We also chat about: The beginning of Focus WP and challenges it faced early on. How Focus WP grew from a need for web designers to hire support that they could trust to produce great results without having to take on all the small aspects of a care plan that they don’t want to or can’t offer. Focus WP provides another “you” to help you with your business at prices that allow you to mark up the cost and still come out on top with services you might not necessarily feel like the expert in. This week I’m diving into money mindset and strategies to overcome the affordability problem. The main takeaways: Money mindset plays a crucial role in pricing and selling products and services. Potential clients saying they can't afford something is not a reflection of the business owner's worth or the market's ability to afford the price. Setting profitable and sustainable prices, reframing the value of a service or product, and not taking rejection personally are key strategies for success. I also share: My personal experiences with money mindset and how it’s evolved throughout my journey. Advice on how to overcome obstacles and achieve desired results through mindset. Why You Don't Need a Niche to Get Web Design Clients EP 47
Welcome to Episode 47 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m sharing why you don’t need a niche to get web design clients and the simple yet effective marketing method that does. The 3 main points to takeaway: If you have a niche that is working for you, don’t change anything. But there are so many people out there who need websites and your services and don’t fit into a specific box. Instead, focus on creating solutions and connecting one-to-one with those people who need them. Being clear on the type of client you want to help and how you can help them, plus being able to clearly communicate that, means you don’t have to niche down. The real work isn’t in the “doing” - it’s in the mind trash that comes up around doing it that makes you freeze up instead of hitting send. I also touch on: What a niche is and how choosing one can help from a marketing perspective when creating copy to speak to your ideal client. The difference between marketing through connection and sliding into someone’s DMs. How working on perfecting your website or posting on social media actually avoids humiliation, versus the tried and true simple marketing method we teach in the Web Designer Academy. Community and Collaboration over Competition with Haley Brown of WP Mavens EP 46
Welcome to Episode 46 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m talking with Haley Brown about growing your web design business through collaboration and community. Haley Brown is a self-confessed Wordpress nerd and design master who has been designing and building Wordpress sites for 10 years. She is one of the founders of WP Mavens, a monthly online membership community for female web designers who are determined to build profitable and productive WP design businesses. 3 lessons from my chat with Haley: You can pivot your business when necessary to make ends meet by tweaking your current offerings slightly. You’re so much more likely to get success with someone you've already had success with - reach out to old and current clients and offer other services to help their businesses. If someone says your prices are too expensive, rather than reducing them, continue to be of service. Break down your offer into smaller chunks to reduce their cost while still delivering the minimum of what they require to move forward. We also talk about how: It took some convincing from her best friend, Emma Kate, to dive into a web design business, but once she started she was all in. Her business was referral-based to begin with. She started by offering help to other web designers for free, who would then either hire her to help them implement or refer her to other projects they didn’t take on. She co-created WP Mavens to be a supportive community and not add more work, but rather offer bite-sized trainings with templates to support other female web designers in growing their business. The challenges each archetype faces and how to harness their strengths. How your archetype can help you attract the ideal clients you want to work with through your energy and messaging. I also talk about: Different personality tests and why there’s no “one size fits all” solution for everyone who comes into the Web Designer Academy. 2023 Mid-Year Review: How to Know When to Restructure Your Pricing EP 44
Welcome to Episode 44 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m digging into my mid-year results and the data that led me to restructure my pricing. In this episode I’m breaking down: The difference between an expense vs. hybrid vs. investment mindset, and how your mindset affects the type of client you attract. The transformation from a hybrid mindset to an investment mindset that our students achieved by investing in a coaching program like the Web Designer Academy. How my decision to charge investment-minded pricing made the hybrid mindset clients I was actually trying to help say no. How I used the data from the last three and a half years to drive my decision to restructure our pricing for the Web Designer Academy. My top 3 lessons from the first half of 2023: You’ll never be done doing the mindset work. It take practice to cultivate and maintain the mindset that will help you create the results you want… but things WILL happen that will knock you off your game, and that’s normal and it’s okay. Don’t keep trying to find all the answers and make all the decisions on your own! Be open to support, encouragement and advice. You can’t always see the problems in your business or the opportunities like other people can. You will have tough times in business if you plan to be in business for any length of time. Nothing has gone wrong… it’s how you build resilience during these tough times that determines results going forward. Welcome to Episode 43 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m sharing my experience with Stripe and I was held liable for fraudulent charges they allowed on my account. What happened: I woke up one morning to find that my Stripe account was being shut down for fraudulent activity that I couldn’t see and hadn’t received any payment notifications for, to the tune of $70,000. After going back and forth several times with their customer support, it became clear that they had no intent of helping me resolve the issue and were planning to refund the charges from my business account. I got the run around from several departments and it came down to disconnecting my bank account in order to protect my business from the fraudulent charges. I also talk about how: The breach was blamed on me somehow exposing my secret API keys in source code when they aren’t even integrated on my website. I had to set up a merchant account through my bank instead of using a third party processor in order for my transactions to be protected from fraud. You can let a moment like this break you, or you can learn from it and help others along the way. Tap here to leave us a rating and review! This week I’m chatting with Melissa Burkheimer about reinventing your design business and following those nudges to pivot. Melissa Burkheimer is the CEO and Conversion Design Director of Melissa Burkheimer Studios, which designs brands and creates buzz-building strategies for product launches. She's also the host of the Design Business Show podcast. 3 takeaways from my chat with Melissa: Frame the value of everything you're bringing to the table with your design and what long-term results it will create for the client. There's a mutual responsibility between client and service provider and it's important to set realistic expectations by educating your clients on what's possible. Reinvention is okay at any time in your business, and it's okay not to grow all the time to help you figure out what you really want and what's in alignment for you. We also talk about how: Melissa started her business after being bored with her job and craving more flexibility to be with her kids. She took on clients through networking events, then grew into doing sales pages and launch strategy, and more recently shifted into brand design-specific projects. Her success came from putting herself in situations without expectations and raising her hand when an opportunity arose. Overcoming Business Obstacles with Josh Hall EP 41
Welcome to Episode 41 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m chatting with Josh Hall about the challenges businesses are facing right now and how to navigate them! Like me, Josh is also a Web Design Coach. He started web design as a freelancing side hustle, and over the years has managed to grow it to a six-figure business today. And, funnily enough, we are actually both based at Columbus, Ohio! He’s also the host of the Web Design Business Podcast. 3 key points from my talk with Josh: There are always going to be periods of ups and downs in business. You need to be proactive and learn to problem solve based on the data in order to adapt to challenges. Trying to go it alone can cause you to make mistakes that perpetuate the problem - having a coach or mentor to help you get to the root of that problem will help you see the reality. Never turn off your sales strategy, even if you need to lessen it during your busier seasons. By always carving out time for your most effective marketing and sales activities, you’ll build a pipeline for when you come out of your booked out season. We also talk about: Trends in the challenges our clients are facing and how we’re seeing that what used to be easy might now take a bit longer. The difference between leads and clients and how you should pay attention to feedback from the people who are paying you, not just talking to you during a consultation. Tactics to get you through the down times in business and how it takes courage to push through these times. Collecting Objective Data to Drive Results in your Web Design Business with Erica Nash EP 40
Welcome to Episode 40 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m chatting with Erica Nash about how to objectively collect data and use it for your web design business! Erica Nash is an online course designer and strategist who also works with me inside the Web Designer Academy as a Client Success Coordinator. Erica helps course creators elevate and streamline their course curriculum to make it more engaging and actionable in order to generate more revenue through retention and quality referrals. 3 takeaways from my chat with Erica: The way you look at things is not the same as everyone else, and the factors that drive you don’t mean the other ones don’t come into play. Things in business are not a pass or fail as in school. Results are just information and what you measure as a success or failure has nothing to do with who you are as a person or your worth as an entrepreneur. It’s critical to have an unbiased mentorship around both the business journey and feelings that come up to help you get back to what’s true during the data collection process. We also talk about how: Erica followed the thread of her passions to land where she is now, using her talents and expertise to help course creators with curriculum. To look at data objectively without minimizing your feelings and face them head on. You need to recognize the value of the strategy and guidance you provide during the decision making process with a client, and that there is a shared responsibility between what you provide and what the client does for their part. Everything You Need to Know About the Web Designer Academy EP 39
Welcome to Episode 39 of the Profitable Web Designer Podcast, where we’re committed to helping web designers to stop undercharging, overdelivering, overworking, overworking and create profitable, sustainable web design businesses. This week I’m pulling back the curtain on the Web Designer Academy to show you everything we do to help our students create results in their web design businesses! 3 key concepts to take away: The Web Designer Academy is not just a course to teach marketing and sales (although that is a part of it), but a container to help students work through mind trash to create the results they want in their web design business faster. We support people through holding boundaries with clients once they book them, keeping projects on track, and not overworking simply because the client agreed to their highest price ever. My goal is to teach people to believe in themselves and communicate the value they provide to their clients so that they are always in charge of creating the results they want, regardless of the economy. We teach the skill of resilience and help you troubleshoot when things aren’t working because there are inevitable ebbs and flows in any business. I also talk about how: The Web Designer Academy began after I hosted a three-part webinar off the backend of a speaking engagement I did and evolved to help female web designers work through their lack of belief in themselves. I restructured the entire Web Designer Academy curriculum in 2019 to provide support through every step of the implementation process and give feedback on every single thing to help students correct mind trash in the moment before it can become a pattern. We take a trauma-informed approach to coaching to create a safe space and the application process helps maintain the integrity of that environment.
