Our Editor's Take

The podcast Why Are You Laughing? is for almost any fan of comedy with a curious mind. In each episode, host Blind Mike analyzes crucial moments in the history of comedy. He examines the 1987 movie Eddie Murphy Raw in one episode. It was the highest-grossing stand-up film of all time. Mike explores what made it successful and whether the jokes are still funny today. In a different episode, he reviews Charlie Chaplin's career. He talks about why the comedian's work was significant and influenced future comedians.

The podcast offers an unusual combination of comedy and academic research. The show features clips of jokes from famous performers throughout the episodes. Then Mike studies the elements that make it funny. It can be anything from surprise to repetitiveness to subverting expectations. For some people, this analysis might ruin the charm and mystery of a good joke. For others, it might make it that much more impressive.

The podcast host is an experienced radio personality with a long-term interest in comedy. Since childhood, Mike Geary wanted to be like Jim Rome and discuss sports on the radio. Later, he started gravitating to hosts like Howard Stern, appreciating his bold approach. Mike began his career in 2015 as an intern for Barstool Sports. That's where he gained the name Blind Mike. (He is legally blind.) The host participated in a series of funny videos where people would test out his disability.

From there, Mike moved on to a promotions job on WEEI. Later, Mike returned to Barstool Sports as the cohost of The Kirk Minihane Show. Nowadays, he's also the host of two other podcasts, The Blind Mike Project and Who Are These Socials?

In Why Are You Laughing? Mike uses everything he learned about comedy and performing for people. He reveals what makes the most notable comedians funny alongside his cohost, Craig. The two provide a lot of historical context in each episode. They also have a charming banter, almost like a stand-up routine.
